I walked into the office on Monday morning to see a note pinned on the notice board.
Meeting today in the lounge room. 11:30 am. Signed, Mr. Robert Raglan - Executive Director.
I scrunched my face in confusion, wondering what Mr. Raglan wanted to talk about. I knew it couldn't be about our new game, because that business was already done and reaping good success. Also, if it was a new proposition or a presentation, we would have met in the board room.
I walked over to the open area where each office space was cut off by cubicles. I went over to my cubicle and sat at my desk. As soon as I sat down, Kaitlyn Barnes walked by my cubicle and greeted me.
"Hey Allison. How was your weekend?" She asked in her usual chirpy voice. Kaitlyn's cubicle was right beside mine. Since I've got here three years ago, she and I had clicked instantly and has been good friends ever since.
I rest my elbow on my desk and looked up at her. "I had a lot of work to do this weekend, so it was just a regular weekend." I responded.
"Ahh, that totally sucks." She replied.
"It was not that bad. I actually didn't mind." I told her honestly.
She smiled at me, her blue eyes looking at me knowingly. "Of course you don't mind. You love staying in."
I shook my head returning her smile. She was always telling me that I should go out and unwind. It wasn't that I didn't want to go out, I just have too many things to do.
"So, how was your weekend?" I asked.
"Well, nothing happened aside from Chad taking me out to dinner on Saturday to this nice restaurant." She said still smiling. "He sure knows how to make a girl feel special." She lifted her hands to brush the few tendrils of her blonde hair that had escaped the clip at the back of her head.
"Wow, that's great." I said. Chad was her boyfriend of six months and I must say, he was the complete gentleman. He really adored Kaitlyn.
Before anything else was said, I heard the voice of my other close friend as she walked towards us. "Hey, what's that about a meeting today?"
I looked towards Tamika Jones as she approached us. She was a very beautiful woman with a friendly personality. She started working here a year after I did and instantly befriend Kaitlyn and I.
"Yeah, what's that about?" Kaitlyn replied, just as puzzled.
I shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know. I saw the note when I got here." I told both of them.
Tamika wrinkled her nose in thought. The light makeup that she wore suited her dark skin perfectly. "That's strange. I've never know of Mr. Raglan pulling an emergency meeting without prior notice."
I nodded in agreement. "That's what I said."
Tamika shrugged her shoulders. "I guess we'll find out later." She said, then set to turn away. "Well, I've got a lot of work to do before this meeting."
"Yeah me too." Kaitlyn said. I told the both of them that I'll talk to them later and they went to their cubicle.
Hours later, after getting a lot of work done, I looked at the clock that hung up on the far wall and saw that I had ten minutes before getting to the meeting. I put away the work that I was doing and walked to the lounge room.
When I entered the room, I saw that Kate and Tamika were already there. They sat in a large burgundy coloured couch that lined one side of the room. I walked over and sat beside Tamika, Kate on her other side. A few other staff members were in the room, sitting on the other couches that occupied the room.
Tamika, Kate and I were talking about random things, waiting for Mr. Raglan to get here, when I heard a throat cleared. We all looked up to see Brian Stevens.
Brian had been working here long before I got here. He had a charming personality and got along well with everyone. He was a handsome man too, with his well cut chestnut hair and beautiful brown eyes. Right now he was dressed in a well fit suit that showed off his striking good looks.
"Excuse me ladies," he spoke, smiling at each of us. "Is it okay if I sit here?"
Kate rolled her eyes at Brian's courtesy. "Of course Brian." She indicated the empty space beside me. "Sit."
"Ahh, I knew you were all nice people." He teased in his usual charming way, as he sat down.
"So Brian, what is this meeting about?" Tamika asked. "You must know. Mr. Raglan and you are close. You are always talking to him."
Brian shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. All I know is that it's a surprise and we're all going to love it." He tried to hold back a smile.
I turned to face him and gave him an unconvinced look. "Oh please Brian. I know you know, so tell us." I demanded.
Brian let out a hearty chuckle. He faced me and his brown eyes captured my gaze. "If I told you it wouldn't be a surprise now, would it?" The way the words slid off his tongue distracted me for a second before I focused on his words.
I shook my head and smiled. "Whatever Brian."
"Yow! Brian!" I heard a shout from across the room. Brian turned his attention from me and looked towards Vincent James, another employee. "Get over here for a sec!"
Brian turned back to us. "Excuse me, while I check what he wants." With that, he stood up and walked over to Vincent and some other staff members.
"You know, you don't have to torture him like that." I heard Kate said, as I watched him walk away.
I turned my attention to her and scrunched my eyebrows in confusion. "What are you talking about?"
Kate gave me a 'are you serious look?'. "Don't tell me that you don't see that he likes you."
I looked at her, shocked at what she had just said. That wasn't true at all. "What? What gave you that idea?"
"He likes you Allison. I see it in the way he looks at you and he's always flirting with you." She said, sporting a knowing smile. "I know these things."
Before I could object any further, Tamika cut in. "I agree with Kate-" she began.
I looked at her lifting both my eyebrows. "Tamika you too!" I exclaimed.
"What? I have eyes!" Tamika defended herself, lifting her hands palm up. "And my friend, I must say, he's into you."
I shake my head at the both of them. I couldn't even consider the possibility. It just seem so...absurd. "You guys are crazy. Just crazy."
"You may say so now, but we know what we are saying." Kate concluded in a sing-song voice. I shake my head at her once more and unconsciously looked across the room at Brian. He was conversing with some staff at the back of the room where a copy machine stood.
I shift my gaze from him, clearing my mind from what Kate and Tamika had said. Brian and I had been good friends since I've started working here. We got along well together. Leave it up to Tamika and Kate to see something that's not there.
