Rose
âItâs so nice to finally meet you in the flesh,â I greet, shaking his hand. âYouâre just as tall as your voice made you sound, Mr. Consigliere.â
He chuckles. âYou flatter me, Miss. Carver,â he replies as he takes a seat. âBut, yes, Iâm glad to meet in person finally. We share borders with Black Opal Pack, so Iâm sure we can relate on a great number of things.â
I draw in breath through my teeth and raise my eyebrows, sharing a moment of commiseration with him.
âHave you heard the rumors?â He asks, resting his temple on his knuckles.
âAbout what?â
âAbout-â
âHey, sorry Iâm late,â Victor announces as he enters my office. Dane, the Clan Leader of the Shadow Ridge Clan, isnât one for much fanfare, so I figured a smaller, more casual setting would suit him better than the formal meeting room.
âDane, this is my second in command, Victor,â I introduce. âHeâs just gonna be here taking notes if thatâs okay?â
âPerfectly fine,â he answers. âAfter all these years being alive, I still have a horrid short-term memory.â
I giggle, running my hand through my hair, and ask, âAnyways, continue what you were saying.â
âWell, my husband, Mario, is a bitten werewolf, so he has friends in the werewolf world. His former pack was Black Opal, and he has nieces and nephews who reside there currently.â
âHow old are they?â I ask.
âIn their forties at this point,â he answers. âWhen Mario was a wolf, Genevieveâs father had just come into power, and Gen and Margaery were but a twinkle in his eye.â
âInteresting,â I murmur. âHe must have great insight into how things have changed, then.â
âWell, you would think that,â he grunts. âBut his nieces and nephews, and their children, are very tight-lipped about whatâs going on there. They claim everything is wonderful and incredible, but he says something about how they say itâ¦â
âHe doesnât believe them?â I ask.
âNope,â he replies. âAnd heâs not allowed onto the territory since they have a No Vampire policy unless one is invited. The only way for pack members to invite vampires into the territory is to get approval from the Luna, which has never been granted in Marioâs case. I assume itâs because heâs my husband.â
âHave they been able to leave to visit him?â I ask.
âYes,â he replies. âThey can come and go as they please as long as they return in. I think itâs three nights unless they get approval from the Luna for more extended travel. If they donât, their membership is revoked, and theyâre rogues.â
âIâve never heard of a pack operating like that,â I reply, grimacing. âI donât have much experience with them, but I know Adelaide Ponira of the River Run Pack, and from what she has told me, thatâs not how Alpha Evander runs his pack. Or how most of them operate.â
âIt is bizarre,â he answers. âAlmost like a cult.â
âSo, are those the rumors youâve been hearing?â I ask. âThat the pack is run like Genevive is the second coming of the Moon Goddess, and all must worship her?â
He laughs, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly. âI donât know. Maybe she just runs a tight ship? I understand the fear of outsiders, especially since vampires and werewolves have only recently been on better terms.â He pauses, raising his eyebrows mischievously. âBut thatâs not the rumor I was referring to.â
âWell, then, what is it?â I ask, leaning in, anxious to hear what he has to say.
âIâve heard that Black Opal and River Run will be at war soon.â
âWhat?â I ask, dumbfounded.
âWell, maybe Iâm being a bit dramatic,â he corrects. âIâve heard that the tension between Genevieve and Evander is growing by the second. Sheâs getting more and more brazen with her anger over what, to me, seems like petty bullshit.â
âIf itâs petty bullshit, I doubt theyâd start a war over it,â I reply, hoping to ease his worry. I donât want any other Clans or Packs goading the two of them into a war. That wouldnât be good for Asher.
âEither way, I believe we ought to start picking sides,â he replies. âNow, if we were to base it solely on who I like more, Iâd back River Run. Howeverâ¦â He trails off. âIf Genvieve runs her ship as tightly as Iâve heard, then I have to believe her military might could match Evanderâs.â
âRiver Run is the reason vampires have liberation,â I argue. âAnd their military is the strongest in the region. Plus, theyâre at least four times the size of Black Opal.â
âThatâs in land, maybe not necessarily in population,â he argues. âNobody really knows how many members either pack has. Again, Iâm not saying that River Run would be easily defeated by any means, but⦠It would certainly be a bloody fight. I think Alpha Evander would underestimate Luna Genevieve quite a bit.â
âAnd where does Alpha Asher fit into all this?â I ask, hoping not to sound too interested in his fate.
He scoffs. âWho fucking knows. Iâve never met the guy or heard a damn thing about him. Sounds like heâs probably her puppet and will do whatever bidding she wants.â
I know thatâs not necessarily trueâ¦
But heâs not wrong either.
âI donât think war is inevitable just yet,â I caution. âSo we shouldnât go backing any horses. I donât want to instigate a fight between two allies.â
âAgreed,â he answers. âI just wanted to see where you were at to gauge if weâd be on the same side.â
âWeâre vampires,â I reply. âWeâre always on the same side. Whether I back River Run and you back Black Opal or vice versa, it doesnât change the relationship between the Clans. I wonât take it personally.â
âIâm glad you have such a level head,â he applauds. âShocking that you havenât found a partner yet.â
I chuckle, blushing a bit. âYeah, dating is a little difficult, being such a young vampire. Plus, my hands are full.â
âWell, I have plenty of suitable men and women who would love to meet you,â he replies. âCould make our relations even better than they already are.â
I chuckle, standing up, ready to finish this part of the conversation. âIâll keep that in mind.â
I glance at the clock, realizing itâs almost time to visit Asher. âI do have to be off on some business, though,â I tell him. âWeâll keep in touch if anything changes regarding our fiery wolf neighbors.â
âIf only they were as diplomatic as us,â he quips, shaking my hand. âI will be in touch, Rose. Lovely meeting you.â
âSafe travels,â I reply, opening the door for him, and he speeds off.
âThat was informative,â Victor says, finally speaking. âGot a lot of information from him for free.â
âYeah, I wonder what his angle is,â I think out loud. âFor someone who insinuated that heâd back Black Opal, he sure talked a lot of shit about them.â
âPersonal feelings and business are often separate things in politics.â
âThis is very true,â I murmur, my chest tightening.
If a war is to break out, the best thing for my clan would be to back River Run. Weâve been strong allies with them, and theyâve never done anything to harm us. Not to mention, I have a good relationship with Alpha Evander, and my relationship with Luna Genevieve is, obviously, a strained one.
Butâ¦
How could I go against Asher when I love him? How could I aid in his packâs defeat? Potentially even his death if it came down to that?
I wouldnât have the strength to do anything to harm him.
I hope it never comes to that.
âRose!â I hear someone shout from beside me. I jump, a little startled.
âWhat the fuck, dude?â Victor shouts. âHave you been camping out here? This is not open to the public!â
I roll my eyes when I see itâs Cadmus and rest my hand on Victorâs shoulder. âItâs alright, heâs new.â
âThere are literally signs posted on the perimeter,â Victor deadpans.
âSorry, mustâve breezed past them,â Cadmus replies. âI wanted to talk to you, so I tracked your scent.â
âThatâs a little much,â I tease, turning to Victor. âIâll be fine. If you wouldnât mind, we should set up meetings with the other regional Clan leaders to see how theyâre feeling about the potential conflict. Or if theyâre even aware of it at all. It wouldnât hurt to corroborate these rumors heâs hearing.â
âAlright,â Victor grunts, eyeing me warily. âIt wouldnât suit us to discuss it any further now that weâre not in private, but Iâll do that and let you know. Didnât you say you had somewhere to be?â
âI do,â I reply, glancing at Cadmus. âYou can have one minute of my time.â
âI just wanted to say thanks for taking me in,â he replies, biting his lip as he looks me up and down. âAnd that you look incredible today.â
âIs that all?â I ask, picking at my nails to make sure he knows Iâm unimpressed.
âYou are a hard woman to please,â he teases. âBut Iâm eager to do so.â
âThat so?â I ask, arching my eyebrow. âDo you want to know what would please me the most?â
âI think I could answer that for you,â he flirts, winking.
I roll my eyes. âWhat would please me the most is if you paid attention to signs and stayed off prohibited areas. This is my personal space for a reason. I donât need any groupies following me to my meetings.â
âGroupies?â He asks, gasping. âSo I have competition?â
âItâs only a competition if you have a fair shot,â I reply, patting him on the shoulder. âYour minute is up, and I must be on my way.â
âIt was the best minute of my life,â he shouts after me. âIâll anxiously await the next one, Rose!â
âThatâs Miss. Carver to you!â I shout over my shoulder before speeding off, my lips curled in a smile.
But not from what Cadmus said.
Iâll be seeing Asher in a few short moments.
