Asher
âPlease, Iâm all ears. Seems like our plans are crumbling as we speak,â I reply, resting my hands on my hips. âHow could Gen have strengthened herself so much, so quickly?â
âIâm not sure it matters,â she replies, grabbing my face and pausing for a second. âBecause we have Rose.â
âRose?â I ask, stepping back. âWhatâre you talking about?â
âShe could challenge Genevieve.â
âMargaery,â I snap. âI know youâre nervous about this, but youâre crossing a line with this. I will not throw my mate against someone weâve discovered is deadly. How dare you suggest that?â
âI wouldnât suggest it if I didnât think Rose could win,â she insists.
âWhatâre you talking about?â I cry. âRose is strong, yes, but sheâs a vampire. Under normal circumstances, itâd be an even match. But with Genevieve being enhanced? Weâd be sending her to her slaughter!â
âAsher, think for a minute. Havenât you ever wondered if there was something different about Rose?â She asks. âThatâs what I looked up at the table. When she joined the Clan and when she took power.â
I lick my lips, scratching my head.
âIsnât it a little strange that she was able to rise through the ranks so quickly? So seamlessly?â
âI-I⦠I guess?â
âHave you noticed anything about her thatâs off? Thatâs different?â
âI mean, sheâs a lot stronger and faster than the average vampire,â I admit. âEspecially from the stories Iâve heard. But that could just be because sheâs exceptional.â
âI think itâs more,â Margaery insists. âThereâs something special about her. Something different. How else could she be your mate?â
âStrange mate pairings have happened before.â
âWith Caelynn and Erik, yes, I know the story. But do you remember what Caelynn had inside her?â She asks. âA phantom wolf granted by the Moon Goddess. She was no normal human.â
âWhatâre you implying? That Rose has a phantom wolf, too?â I ask. âThat the Moon Goddess created another human with one, and she just so happened to be bitten and turned into a vampire? Wouldnât she have realized she has the voice of a wolf by now? And I thought the Moon Goddess made Caelynn and Erik relinquish their powers to keep it out of peopleâs hands! Why would She then create another?â
âI donât claim to know what power she has,â Margaery says. âBut thereâs got to be something. There are too many strange things about her for it to be a coincidence. The vague past, the quick rise to power, her vastly superior skillset, her mate pairing to you.â
âWe still donât know whatâs going on with Gen, though.â
âWhatever it is, itâs otherworldy!â Margaery cries. âWho knows, but Iâm not sure if it matters. We may never know. We need someone who can beat Gen, with or without her newfound powers.â
âI canât ask Rose to do that,â I refuse. âI canât put her in any more danger than I already have. Thatâs too much to ask.â
âThis may be our only chance!â
âBased on a hunch!â I cry. âBased on your suspicion that she might be special. Even if that is the case and there is something different about her, that doesnât mean her powers match Genâs. That doesnât mean I can risk her life on a bet!â
âHas she told you anything about it? About any powers she may have?â
âNo!â I cry. âIf she had, I would have told you.â
âThen, is there anything you sense that sheâs hiding?â
I pause, letting out a breath Iâve been holding. Could Margaery be right? Could Rose have otherworldly powers? How would that be possible?
And why hasnât she told me?
âI mean, yes. There is something I can sense sheâs holding back, but I have no idea what it is.â
âYou need to ask her, then.â
âNo, I donât!â I argue. âShe is my mate! I canât force things out of her or interrogate her.â
âIâm not suggesting that you do. Iâm just saying you should ask about it because something is going on. And she might be our only shot to take down Gen.â
âEven if she is, I wonât allow it.â
âThatâs awfully chauvinistic of you, Asher.â
âAre you serious?â I ask, my voice cracking. âHow do you figure that?â
âItâs not your decision to make!â She insists. âItâs her decision. We won't make her if she doesnât want to fight Gen. Of course. But, if there is something special about her, if she does have power we donât understand⦠She has a vested interest in getting Gen out of power, too. She wants to see you as Alpha. You could rule together.â
âYouâre tying this up with a very pretty bow as if I wouldnât be risking the life of my mate. Asking her to risk her life for me.â
âThatâs her choice to make,â Margaery replies. âShe has agency. Sheâs a powerful woman, and she always has been. You canât make that decision for her.â
âBut-â
âNo buts!â She interrupts. âAll Iâm asking is you talk to Rose about this and see what she says. And listen to what she wants. If she doesnât want to risk it, thatâs alright. But if she does⦠She may be our last chance to win. There may not be anyone else.â
I stomp my foot on the ground, gritting my teeth.
If Margaery is right about Rose, and there is something different about her, which part of me knows there is, then she could be the only one who can beat Gen.
She may be our only shot.
But is that a risk Iâm willing to take?
I know Rose well enough to know sheâd jump at the chance to challenge Gen. Iâm shocked she hasnât asked to do it already. Maybe just because the optics of a vampire challenging a werewolf would be strange, and her Council may disapprove. Sheâd have to have a long talk with them, asking for their permission or forgiveness.
But sheâd do it if I asked. Sheâs brave, fierce, and a competitor at heart. She also loves me and wants vengeance for me. She wants to free my pack almost as much as I do. She wants me to reunite with my family almost as much as I do.
Sheâd say yes.
And thatâs what scares me.
âPlease, Asher,â Margaery begs. âJust talk to her about it. At the very least, figure out if my suspicions are true. You may want to know this about her since she is your fated mate.â
I gulp down the lump in my throat, my stomach churning with guilt.
What should I do? Do I ask Rose? Do I tell her about this conversation?
Or do I keep it from her? Tell Margaery that sheâs wrong or Rose refused the challenge offer. Lie and say weâve got to come up with something else.
Prioritize my need to protect the woman I love, or do what needs to be done for my pack? Be a mate or a leader?
But, if I keep this from Rose, am I being a good mate? Is Margaery right? Am I stealing her autonomy if I donât allow her to choose?
And what is it that sheâs hiding?
I pull out my phone, texting Rose to tell her I need to see her urgently. Iâll be at her office in ten minutes. Victor can help make sure the coast is clear.
âIâll speak with her,â I tell Margaery reluctantly. âI canât promise anything, though.â
âA conversation with her is all I ask for,â she replies, closing her eyes and letting out a long breath. âLetâs hope she could be the ace up our sleeve.â
âYeah,â I answer half-heartedly, part of me hoping sheâs wrong. Begging the Moon Goddess that Rose does not have this power.
That way, she wonât have to challenge Gen. I wonât have to live with this choice.
Because if anything happened to Roseâ¦
The guilt alone would kill me.
