Valerie's POV:
I stood in the grand foyer, waiting for Mira with Julie by my side. Julie had asked me to join her on a visit to her grandma's place, and I had agreed, excited to spend time with my friend and her loved one. Mira had also wanted to tag along, and since it was I and Julie's day off, we had decided to make the most of it and explore Calon City.
"Your grandma will be thrilled with all the goodies you got for her," I said to Julie, nodding towards the bags in her hand.
Julie smiled, her expression a mix of love and guilt. "This is the least I can do for her, since I'm not staying with her. I feel so bad for leaving her alone in Pacifica." Her eyes dropped, and her voice was laced with regret.
I was about to respond when we heard a cheerful voice behind us. "Val, Julie, sorry I'm late!"
We turned to see Mira approaching us, dressed in a mini denim skirt and a track jacket, her hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, and wearing Converse shoes. Next to her was Bellamy, dressed in a flowing yellow sundress and sandals, her long hair cascading down her back.
"Hey, can Bellamy come with us?" Mira asked.
Julie stiffened next to me, and I felt a sudden tension in the air. "Uh, I-I don't knowâ" Julie stuttered nervously.
But before she could finish, Bellamy spoke up, "Oh, I just remembered, I promised Ariana I'd help her with her hair today. I can't join you guys." Her expression was apologetic, but her eyes seemed to hold a hint of annoyance.
Mira looked disappointed, "But..."
Bellamy smiled and waved her hand. "It's ok, my lady. I can come with you guys another time." With that, she hurried away without looking back.
Julie sighed, a mixture of relief and frustration, but then smiled at us. "Can we go now?"
I wondered what had just happened, and even Mira looked a little confused, but we both brushed it off and left the Palace.
We took a bus to where Julie's grandmother stayed; Pacifica province, which was approximately 45 minutes away. The Palace was located in Civitas province.
I took my seat next to Julie, with Mira sitting in front of me. As the bus pulled out of the station, I gazed out the window at the passing scenery.
"Wow, look at that building!" I exclaimed, pointing to a sleek skyscraper. "It's so... shiny!"
Julie chuckled beside me. "That's the Calon City Tower. It's one of the tallest buildings in the city."
Mira turned around from her seat, her eyes wide with wonder. "I know, right? I've never seen anything like it. I've only seen pictures of Calon City before."
Julie smiled. "Well, you're both in for a treat. Calon City is amazing, and Pacifica Province is even more stunning."
As we drove through the city, Julie pointed out various landmarks and neighborhoods, with Mira and I asking questions and marveling at the sights.
"Look, there's the City Square," Julie said, gesturing to a bustling public space filled with people and street performers. "And that's the famous Calon City fountain."
Mira turned around again, her eyes sparkling. "It's so beautiful."
I nodded still in awe, Calon city definitely was amazing.
As we approached the province border, the scenery shifted from urban to suburban, with rolling hills and verdant parks replacing the concrete jungle.
"We're entering Pacifica Province now," Julie said, following our gaze out the window. "It's one of the most beautiful provinces in Calon city, with stunning beaches and scenic coastal routes."
Mira and I just nodded in awe.
As we stepped out of the bus and into the station, the salty air enveloped us, filled with the cries of seagulls overhead. I breathed deeply, feeling the cool ocean breeze fill my lungs.
Mira shivered beside me. "It's getting cold!" she exclaimed.
Julie smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "That's because the ocean isn't far from here," she said.
Mira's eyes widened, her face alight with enthusiasm. "Really? I'd love to see it!"
Julie chuckled. "Of course, but first, let's go see my granny. She's waiting for us."
We walked through the station and out into the neighborhood, the houses around us all looking similar - small, cozy cottages with gardens bursting with colorful flowers and lush greenery. The streets were quiet, with only a few people milling about, adding to the peaceful atmosphere.
After a short walk, we stood in front of a charming cottage, its garden overflowing with roses and lavender. Julie knocked on the door, and after a moment, it creaked open. An elderly woman stood before us, her silver hair piled high on her head, her eyes twinkling with warmth. She wore a soft yellow dress with white flowers, and a gentle smile spread across her face as she saw Julie.
"Granny!" Julie exclaimed, rushing forward to hug her tightly.
The older woman's eyes crinkled at the corners as she smiled, her arms wrapping around Julie in a warm embrace. After a moment, Julie stepped back, her eyes shining with happiness.
"Granny, these are my friends from the Palace, Valerie and Mira," she said, gesturing to us.
Mira and IÂ bowed our heads slightly, greeting her respectfully.
Julie's grandma smiled widely. "Please come in, dear ones," she said, stepping aside to let us enter.
Mira grinned at me, and we followed Julie and her grandma into the cozy cottage.
The interior of the cottage was tastefully decorated with comfortable furniture, colorful rugs, and vibrant curtains. The walls were adorned with family photos and artwork, giving the place a personal touch.
"Please, sit down," Julie's grandma said, gesturing to the couch. Mira and I sank into the plush cushions, feeling at ease.
"Julie, dear, can you help me in the kitchen?" her grandma asked, smiling.
Julie nodded and picked up the bag she had brought. "Yeah, Granny, I'll help you with the snacks."
As they headed to the kitchen, Mira and I began to explore the room. I straightened when my eyes landed on a framed photo on the mantle. A man and woman stood with their arms around two young girls, both smiling at the camera. One girl had brown hair and brown eyes, while the other had black hair and a slimmer build. I recognized the brown-haired girl as Julie.
Mira joined me, her eyes fixed on the photo. "Look at Julie, she looked so cute when she was younger!" I nodded in agreement. Mira furrowed her brows, her gaze fixed on the other girl. "Who is this girl? Is she her sister?"
I studied the girl's features, feeling a sense of familiarity. "She kind of looks familiar," I said, my brow furrowed in concentration.
Mira's eyes widened suddenly. "She does look familiar!"
Just then, we heard a sound and turned to see Julie setting the table. She smiled at us. "What are you guys looking at?"
I pointed to the photo. "We were just admiring your younger picture. Who is this girl? She looks familiar."
Julie rushed forward, her eyes fixed on the photo. "This is my sister, but she's not here. She's in Marlenia, so you couldn't have met her."
Mira nodded, her expression thoughtful. "She's pretty."
Julie's smile was tinged with sadness. "Yes, my younger sister is really pretty."
Just then, Julie's grandma stepped out of the kitchen, her eyes locking onto Julie's. They held a silent gaze, and I sensed that there was more to the story.
___________
"This is Pacifica City's market square," Julie said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
We walked through the bustling market, surrounded by vibrant stalls and the sounds of haggling vendors. The smell of fresh produce and exotic spices filled the air, tantalizing our senses. Julie had told us about her mother's passing and how her younger sister, was living in Marlenia with their father. Julie had remained with her maternal grandmother. My heart went out to Julie, knowing it couldn't be easy to be separated from her loved ones.
As we strolled through the market, a woman called out to us, "My dear, I have necklaces for you!" Her stall was a treasure trove of colorful necklaces, each one more beautiful than the last. I stopped, curious, and the woman smiled as I approached.
"Welcome, dear! I have just the thing for you." She gestured to a stunning pearl necklace that had caught my eye. The pearls glimmered in the sunlight, their luster irresistible.
"It's beautiful," I breathed.
"Ah, you have an eye for quality," the woman said, her eyes twinkling. "This pearl was found in the sea bordering Pacifica. It's said to bring good fortune and protection to the wearer."
I couldn't resist the necklace's charm. "How much is it, ma'am?"
"Only 500CF," she replied with a smile.
My eyes widened at the price, it was too expensive. I hesitated, "Would you take 300CF?" I asked, trying to haggle.
The woman chuckled. "I'm afraid not, dear. This pearl is rare and precious. I can't let it go for less than its worth."
I realized I didn't have enough money, not having received my salary yet. Just then, I felt someone stand beside me. It was Mira, surreptitiously pressing some money into my hand. I looked at her in surprise, but she smiled encouragingly.
I mouthed "thank you" and purchased the necklace.
Mira gushed, "This is really nice, Val!"
"It's for my mom," I said, my eyes shining with excitement. "She'll love it."
Julie nodded in agreement. "It's beautiful, Val. Your mom will treasure it."
The woman selling the necklace called out as we walked away, "Don't you girls want to buy more? I have some lovely earrings that would match that necklace perfectly!"
Mira and Julie replied in unison, "We're good, thanks! We don't want to bankrupt our friend!" They giggled, and I playfully rolled my eyes.
As we walked away, I pressed 100CF into Mira's hand and whispered, "I also have to take responsibility too. Thank you though."
Mira smiled and whispered back, "Anytime, Val. That's what friends are for."
We continued through the market, and I spotted a stall selling beautiful sea shell wind chimes. I couldn't resist buying one, the sound of the shells gentle in the breeze. Mira, meanwhile, picked up two Pacifica iconic keychains and some sea salt candles, her eyes shining with delight. Julie browsed through a nearby stall, finally settling on a lovely woven basket and a book about Pacifica's history.
After our purchases, we simply enjoyed the sights and sounds of the market. We wandered past stalls selling colorful fabrics, fresh seafood, and exotic spices. The aroma of grilled fish and roasted nuts filled the air, making our stomachs growl with hunger. We laughed and chatted, taking in the vibrant atmosphere.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the market, Julie said, "I have a place I want to show you guys. Follow me!"
She led us towards a pier, the grand structure stretching out into the sea. The sound of waves crashing against the pillars created a soothing melody. Food stalls lined the pier, offering mouthwatering delights like grilled shrimp and seafood skewers. Performers entertained the crowds, their music and laughter carrying on the breeze.
We walked along the pier, taking in the breathtaking views of the ocean. The sky was painted with hues of pink and orange, the sun dipping below the horizon. People milled about, some sitting on benches, others strolling hand in hand. The sea sparkled like diamonds, the waves glistening in the fading light.
"This is incredible," Mira breathed, her eyes wide with wonder.
"I know, right?" Julie said, her smile radiant. "This is one of my favorite spots in Pacifica. It's called the Grand Pier."
I gazed out at the sea, feeling the stress and tension of the past few days melt away. The Grand Pier was indeed a special place, a haven of peace and beauty.
Julie's voice was barely audible as she whispered, "My dad would always take my sister and I here when we were younger. It was our special spot."
I took her hand and pressed it softly, offering comfort. "It's beautiful, Julie. I can see why it's so special to you."
Julie smiled gratefully at me. "Thanks, Val. It means a lot to me."
Mira's stomach growled loudly, breaking the sentimental moment. "Can we eat something? I'm starving!"
I rolled my eyes, laughing. She stuck her tongue at me playfully.
Julie led us to one of the food stalls, the aroma of crispy crab cakes and fresh lemonade wafting through the air. The stall was colorful, with vibrant umbrellas and a sign that read "Fresh Seafood Delights." We decided to buy the crab cakes and lemonade, our mouths watering in anticipation.
We settled on a bench side by side, eating and watching the sunset. The sky was painted with hues of pink and orange, the sea glistening in the fading light.
Mira muttered, "I would love to come here again. This is amazing."
"We definitely need to come back here," I agreed, taking a bite of my crab cake.
Julie smiled. "Okay, then we'll come back here together. Promise."
_______
As we strolled through the street, the night sky twinkled above us, the stars shining like diamonds. The street was bustling with people, laughing and chatting, enjoying the evening. We walked past shops and restaurants, the sounds of music and clinking glasses filling the air.
Julie stopped in front of a supermarket, the sign reading "Coastal Supermarket" in bold letters. The exterior was well-lit, with a bright awning and large windows displaying the various products inside.
"I need to get some toiletries," Julie said, pushing open the door.
Mira and I nodded in unison, following her inside. The supermarket was spacious, with rows of shelves stocked with everything from food to household items. The toiletries section was well-organized, with a variety of products on display.
As we browsed through the shelves, I remembered I needed to get some knitting tools. "I'll be right back," I said, quietly leaving Julie and Mira to continue shopping.
I made my way to the crafting section, which was located on the other side of the supermarket. The knitting stands were well-stocked, with a variety of yarns and needles on display. I picked up a set of knitting needles and a ball of soft, white yarn.
As I was about to move to the next stall, I saw Lord Luke standing at the other end of the aisle. My heart skipped a beat as I wondered what he was doing here. But my curiosity turned to surprise when I saw a girl in her 20s standing in front of him. She was dressed in a short, revealing dress and had heavy makeup on. Her chestnut hair cascaded down her back, and a tattoo of a sun was visible on her left shoulder.
I hid behind a nearby shelf, watching them with interest. What was Lord Luke doing here with her?
Lord Luke's eyes darted around nervously. "What are you doing here, Celine?" he asked, his voice low and urgent.
Celine breathed out, her shoulders sagging. "I have something to tell you."
"And you couldn't tell me over the phone? You had to meet me in person? Do you know what will happen if they find out about us?"
My eyes widened as I inched closer, my heart racing.
Celine's voice was firm. "I don't care. I just needed to see you."
Lord Luke raised an eyebrow, his expression dismissive. "That will have to wait. I am busy."
Celine's face fell, but she stood her ground. "But Lukeâ"
He pushed her away, his movements sharp. "I said I'm busy."
But then she said it. The words that made my heart drop. "I'm pregnant."
Lord Luke froze, his eyes wide with shock. His face was pale, his jaw clenched. He looked like he had been punched in the gut.
The girl smirked, her eyes gleaming with a wicked light. "And you know you are the father."
The silence was deafening. I couldn't believe what I had just heard. Lord Luke, Princess Evie's fiancé, was having an affair with this girl? And she was pregnant with his child?
Then Lord Luke spoke, his voice cold and detached. "Get rid of it."
The girl's eyes flashed with anger. "No, I'm not getting rid of my child."
Lord Luke's grip on her hand tightened, his face twisted in rage. "I said get rid of it."
But before he could say anything else, a loud clatter echoed through the aisle, making us all jump. It sounded like something had fallen off a shelf. Lord Luke, Celine, and I all turned, our eyes fixed on the noise.
Princess Evie stood there, her eyes wide with shock, her face pale. The flask at her feet seemed to be forgotten, a testament to the bombshell that had just been dropped. She just stood there, frozen in disbelief.
Lord Luke's eyes widened, and he started to speak, "Evie, Iâ"
But Princess Evie cut him off, her voice sharp. "Don't! Don't even try to explain." She walked towards them, her eyes blazing with anger. "What did I just hear? You're having an affair with this...this...girl?" She spat out the words, her disdain evident.
Lord Luke sneered, "Evie, this girl is a liar. She's just trying to cause trouble."
But Celine stood her ground, her expression defiant. "Don't try that, Luke. I'm not doing this anymore. He's my man, and we're expecting a baby."
Princess Evie's face crumpled, her eyes welling up with tears. "What did I ever do to you, Luke? I'm not sure I have cheated on you with anyone. Why are you doing this?"
He threw his head back and laughed, mocking Princess Evie's words. "Oh please, do you think I didn't know you were sneaking around with that bodyguard of yours?"
My head snapped towards Princess Evie, who looked guilty but stood tall, her voice firm. "At least I didn't sleep with him, jerk."
Lord Luke's face darkened, his eyes flashing with anger. "What did you just call me?"
Celine tried to intervene, her voice calm. "Let's not cause a scene here, Luke."
But Lord Luke ignored her, his gaze fixed on Princess Evie. "What did you just say?"
Princess Evie stood her ground, her voice steady. "Jerk."
Lord Luke's response was swift and brutal. He grasped Princess Evie's arm roughly, squeezing it tight. Celine cried out, "Luke, what do you think you are doing? She's a princess, for goodness sake!"
But Lord Luke didn't relent, his grip only tightening. Princess Evie cried out in pain, her face contorted in anguish.
My anger boiled over, and I couldn't stand it anymore. I rushed forward, my foot connecting with Lord Luke's back. He crashed to the ground, his eyes wide with shock.
Celine shouted, "Luke!" and rushed to his side.
I quickly moved to Princess Evie's side, asking, "Are you okay?"
Her eyes turned from shock to anger, and she spat, "What do you think you are doing? Answer me, peasant!"
I shouted back, "Princess! Stop it!" My voice cracked, and tears began pouring down my face. Princess Evie looked surprised at my outburst, but I continued, "You don't have to do this. You don't have to marry this guy."
Her face crumpled, and she started crying like a child who had lost her mother. Her body shook with sobs, and her blue eyes were red and puffy.
"I don't have a choice," she whispered.
I held her shoulders firmly, looking into her eyes. "Look at me, Your Highness. You always have a choice. One that doesn't involve Lord Luke at all."
Her eyes, red and swollen, met mine, and I saw a glimmer of hope there.
Just then, Lord Luke started shouting, "Who the hell are you? How dare you touch me!"
He began to get up, his face twisted in anger, and I stood ready to face him.
Just as Lord Luke raised his hand to strike me, a strong hand gripped his wrist, holding it in place. I turned to see Princess Evie looking angry, her eyes blazing. She shouted, "Jerk!" and launched herself at him, fists flying. They crashed to the ground, with Princess Evie pinning him down, punching him relentlessly.
Celine and I rushed to intervene, trying to pry her hands off him, but she was too furious. Mira and Julie arrived, eyes wide with shock, and joined the effort to restrain the princess. A guard rushed forward, shouting, "Princess!" and helped to subdue her. He held her squirming body, her face red with rage, her hair disheveled, and her eyes blazing with anger.
Lord Luke, meanwhile, was holding his face, which was now covered in bruises and scratches. Celine glared at him, her eyes flashing with anger. Princess Evie struggled against the guard's grip, shouting, "Son of a bitch!" as she was dragged away.
Seconds later, Lord Luke stormed off, Celine following closely behind. Julie turned to me, a sarcastic smile on her face. "We wondered where you were. Glad to know you were here." I was still in shock, unsure of what to say.
Mira's smile widened and she looked relieved. "Let's go home, I would love to hear how she found out about him, Val."
I agreed, we needed to get home.
