Epilogue

Royal Heartstrings1,938 words~10 min read

It was my wedding day. It was my wedding day!

For the past year, the people of Calonia had warmed up to me. No longer did they question my humble beginnings or how I'd captured Prince Nova's heart. Of course, some still didn't approve, but I didn't let that bother me.

Today was the day we'd been waiting for.

I sat upright on my bed, reaching for my phone to dial Mira's number. Mira had gone out of the country with Prince Cadoc, turns out she was living her dream of traveling around the world, but with Prince Cadoc by her side. For the past year, Mira had explored exotic lands, experienced new cultures, and created unforgettable memories, all while I stayed in the Palace, learning the intricacies of royal life and preparing to become a queen. Of course I was no longer a maid.

"Where are you? You said you'd be here yesterday. Today's the wedding day," I said, trying to hide my anxiety.

Mira's laugh echoed through the line. "Relax, I'm here."

Before I could respond, a knock at the door interrupted me. I rose to answer it, and my eyes widened.

Mira stood before me, accompanied by Emily, Lydia, my mom, and a few maids.

"There's the bride!" my mom exclaimed.

Mira grinned. "Do you really think I'd miss my bestie's big day?" she teased.

I laughed, embracing her tightly.

Emily chimed in. "Don't forget us in the hug."

That's how I found myself in a group hug with the people I loved.

After releasing me, they whisked me away to get ready. The deep red gown shimmered as I slipped it on. The designers had crafted it perfectly, opening up from the waist down like a blooming flower. My hair was styled, makeup applied, and finally, a red veil covered my face, adhering to our customs.

My mom gasped, even though she couldn't see my face. "Wow, you look so beautiful."

I smiled under the veil, unable to see her clearly.

Lydia added. "Yes Auntie, Val is a stunning bride."

Emily chimed in. "Prince Nova is so lucky to have you."

Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes. "Thank you...all of you," I whispered.

Mira asked. "Ready?"

I nodded.

With my entourage surrounding me, they led me to the grand hall.

The sound of gentle music and murmuring guests grew louder. My heart beat faster but I was ready to begin my new life with the love of my life.

As I entered the grand hall, everyone stood, their faces a blur beyond my red veil. I kept my gaze downcast, following my mom's gentle guidance to the raised dais.

We reached the platform, and I took my seat. A moment later, someone sat beside me. Without a doubt, I knew it was Nova. Yes, I'd started calling him that, and turns out I liked it that way - intimate, personal, and ours.

A bowl filled with dark red liquid appeared under my veil, an ancient tradition to verify the bride's identity. I smiled, seeing my reflection staring back. And beside me, Nova's reflection smiled too.

He raised his thumbs up to the crowd, and I giggled. Our reflections showed our shared joy. The hall erupted in cheers.

Nova and I stood, and the veil was lifted.

I blinked, taking in the sea of faces. My parents beamed with pride. Mira grinned, surrounded by Prince Cadoc, Emily, Lydia, Alia Mambo, and her family. Miss Millicent and Lord Alexander smiled warmly. Mrs. Bertha waved enthusiastically.

My heart swelled, seeing so many loved ones gathered for me. There were many unfamiliar faces, too, but they all shared the same celebratory spirit.

The king was away on vacation, but I knew he'd return tomorrow for our coronation - which was coincidentally Nova's 22nd birthday. Princess Evie, back from her Nourvian trip, smiled graciously at me.

I turned to Nova, resplendent in his red traditional suit.

"You're handsome," I mouthed.

"You're beautiful," he mouthed back, simultaneously.

Our synchronized whispers made us smile. Nova's eyes sparkled, and I felt my heart flutter.

The ceremony started, but I was lost in his gaze.

The High Priestess's voice resonated through the hall. "Welcome, everyone, to witness the sacred union between Valerie Alaric of Eldrida and Crowned Prince Nova Calon." She handed Nova and me each a delicate red string. "Valerie Alaric, please recite your vow to Prince Nova Calon."

I took a deep breath. "Prince Nova, from the moment I met you, I knew you were different. You saw me, truly saw me, when no one else did. You showed me kindness, compassion, and love. I promise to stand by your side, through joy and adversity, to support your dreams, and to be your rock. I love you now and forever."

I tied the red string around Nova's wrist, symbolizing our eternal bond.

The High Priestess turned to Nova. "Prince Nova Calon, please recite your vow to Valerie Alaric."

Nova's eyes locked onto mine. "Valerie, my love, you illuminate my world. You're my best friend, my partner, and my soulmate. I vow to cherish, protect, and adore you. Together, we'll build a brighter future for Calonia and our people. I promise to laugh with you, cry with you, and love you unconditionally."

He tied the red string around my wrist, sealing our promise.

The High Priestess smiled. "The time for rings has come. Valerie Alaric, do you take Prince Nova Calon to be your husband and partner?"

I replied without hesitation. "Yes."

The High Priestess turned to Nova. "Prince Nova Calon, do you take Valerie Alaric to be your wife and partner?"

Nova grinned. "Yes, and always."

We exchanged rings, our eyes locked on each other. The High Priestess winked at me, and I grinned.

With a warm smile, she raised her hands. "By the ancient traditions of Calonia, I pronounce you husband and wife." The hall erupted in cheers. The High Priestess's voice rose above the din. "You may kiss now."

I grinned at Nova, and he pulled me into a passionate kiss. Our lips met, sealing our love forever.

As the main ceremony concluded, the hall transformed into a vibrant celebration. Nova and I sat together, receiving guests who came to offer congratulations and gifts.

Miss Millicent approached, accompanied by a tall, handsome man.

"Congratulations, I'm so happy for you!" Miss Millicent exclaimed.

I smiled, and Nova grinned beside me.

"Oh, this is my fiancé," Miss Millicent added.

The man bowed. "My name is Kevin Martin. I'm honored to be here," he said.

"Thank you for coming," I replied.

Miss Millicent presented us with a beautifully wrapped gift.

"I'm launching my eco-friendly engines soon, and I'd love for you both to attend," she said.

Nova smiled. "Milli, you don't even need to ask. We'll definitely be there," he said, glancing at me.

I nodded in agreement.

After Miss Millicent and Kevin departed, Lord Alex approached, his warm smile a welcome sight.

I stood to hug him, and he squeezed back, whispering. "Congratulations, Brownie."

"Thank you, Lord Alexander," I replied.

Lord Alex was now governor, having taken office after his father's imprisonment for embezzlement. His swift action in addressing the corruption had earned him the people's respect.

Lord Alex clapped Nova's shoulder. "Congrats, cousin."

Nova smiled. "Thank you, Alexander."

Lord Alex presented his gift and smiled before making way for the next guest.

Prince Cadoc and Mira approached together, offering a joint gift.

"We're so happy for you both," Mira said.

My parents, Alia Mambo with her husband and daughter, Big Mum with Jude, and some workers from the palace followed, each presenting heartfelt gifts.

Then, Caspian Pierce, Velma, and their two sons, Xander and Gale, approached. Gale had recently returned from guard school in Valdoria, accompanied by his girlfriend.

"We're beyond thrilled for you, Valerie," Velma said, embracing me tightly.

Caspian nodded in agreement. "You two are meant to be."

Their gift, a beautifully crafted silver vase, sparkled in the light.

Princess Evie hugged me tightly when it was her turn.

"That tiara I left with you? It's yours," she whispered. Before I could protest, Princess Evie curtseyed. "My queen."

My eyes widened. "Thank you, Princess Evie," I managed.

The procession continued, with well-wishers and gifts flowing in. Nova's hand remained firmly entwined with mine, a constant reminder of our union.

After the gift-giving ceremony, Nova and I shared our first dance as a married couple. The music enveloped us, and our eyes locked in a loving gaze. As we swayed to the rhythm, others joined in, filling the dance floor with laughter and joy.

Then I danced with Lord Alexander, Prince Cadoc, and my father - who beamed with happiness.

Hours passed in a blur of music, laughter, and feasting. At one point in the celebration, I thought I saw a girl that looked like Julie but when I turned to confirm she was gone. So I must have imagined it.

My mom approached me hurriedly, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"What are you still doing here?" she asked.

I raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

My mom's smile was sly. " It's your wedding night, of course."

My cheeks flushed, and my heart skipped a beat. I swallowed, nodding nonetheless. It was unavoidable. Glancing around, I spotted Nova across the room, engaged in conversation with a guest. As if sensing my gaze, he turned, meeting my eyes. His expression changed, and he grinned, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

My face burned, and I looked away, feeling a flutter in my chest. Tonight was going to be something.

Mira joined us, and together they led me to the east wing, a guard following closely behind. I was still getting used to the constant protection.

We arrived at the suite reserved for Nova and me. The spacious room took my breath away. Roses adorned the bed, and fairy lights twinkled like stars. Gorgeous.

Mira and my mom helped me into a stunning white nightgown, its delicate fabric showcasing more cleavage than I was comfortable with. The hem barely grazed my lap, but I knew protesting would be futile. They sprayed perfume on my skin, letting my hair cascade down my back.

As they finished, my mom smiled mischievously. "We'll leave you to...enjoy your night."

My face flushed, but I didn't say anything.

Mira teased. "Have fun, Your Majesty."

I playfully glared at her. With a wave, they departed, leaving me alone.

Following tradition, I sat on the bed, waiting for Nova. But as minutes ticked by, I stood, wrapping myself in a robe, and stepped onto the balcony.

My kingdom stretched before me, bathed in moonlight. I smiled, the wind dancing through my hair.

The door opened, and footsteps approached. Nova stood beside me, his eyes mirroring my gaze.

"We made it," I whispered.

Nova's voice was laced with teasing. "There are other things we could make."

I playfully scolded. "Nova!!"

He chuckled, and I joined in.

Nova's expression turned serious. "That's also your name now."

I cocked my head. "Huh?"

"Valerie Nova Calon," he explained, his eyes shining brightly.

I hummed in approval.

Valerie Nova Calon. I liked it. A lot.

Nova's smile matched mine. "You like it?" he asked.

I nodded.

"It's perfect."

Nova wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close.

"Forever and always, Valerie Nova Calon."
