Harvey Mendoza has always loved playing hockey, just not in Miami. Her and her brother always dreamed of playing in the NHL, and they were getting closer and closer to achieving that dream. Harvey, or The Bandit, has always tried to help her big brother stop in his skates, but it would always turn into a big mess. Harvey's brother was currently laying on the cold floor, after a brutal fall as his sister skated towards him.
"I'm never gonna get the hang of this." She smirked as she helped her big brother off the floor and onto his skates. Harvey also grabbed his helmet and handed it to him.
"I know you can, Lu. You're a Mendoza, you can do anything. Besides, if they don't take you, they can't have me." Her big brother smiled as they made their way off the rink and towards the locker room, getting ready to leave. They pack up their gear and put on their in lines. If they weren't going to ice skate, they were going to rollerblade. The Mendoza twins were always up for a competition against each other. So, Luis proposed a bet between the two.
"First one home wins. Loser has to pay the other twenty bucks." Harvey knew she had that twenty in the bag, she was the faster twin after all. She nodded her head and shook his hand, agreeing. She faced in the direction of their house, tightened the strap of her bag, and bent her knees, ready to go. "3, 2, 1, go!" The twins have done this a hundred times, so Harvey knew the best shortcuts. She had to skate through the mall, and a couple of allies. She knew her brother would never skate through a mall, so she should be okay. She quickly skated past at least three allies before turning down the right one. All she had to do was skate down the hill and take a left. "Harvey!" She turned her head to see her brother coming down the hill. Her eyes widened as she pushed herself faster towards their house. Fifteen more feet and that twenty was hers. She could hear her brother's skates and heavy breath behind her as she sped past her neighbors' houses. She just had to push herself a few more steps. Victory was hers! She stopped right in front of her house as her brother also attempted to stop, but failed miserably. She covered her mouth, holding back a laugh as she saw him, crash into a trash can.
"Twenty. Pay up, Lu." Luis scoffed as his little sister helped him up from the concrete floor. He reached into his back pocket, pulling out a crumpled twenty and handing it to Harvey. She smiled as the twins made their way into the house, ready for practice the next week.
..........
"Hey, y'all the twins right?" Harvey and Luis turned around to see a boy in hockey gear with a cowboy hat on his head. They looked at each other and chuckled a bit before turning to the boy and nodding.
"I'm Luis. This is Harvey." The boy looked confused as they shook hands.
"I'm Dwayne." His southern accent made the twins looked at each other and smile, grabbing their helmets and sticks. Julie, Dean, Dwayne, Luis, Harvey, and Ken all skated onto the ice to see a team wearing green uniforms. Harvey looked at her brother and nodded her head before giving him a high-five and fixing her jersey. Harvey has been number twenty three for as long as she could remember. It's mostly because her big brother had gotten twenty two and she just wanted to have a close number.
"Luis Mendoza, he's from our Miami club. A real speedster, incredible skater. Clocked him at 1.9 seconds, blue line to blue line." Luis put his helmet on and started skating backwards and forwards around the rink, kneeling down to touch the ice as he went. As Luis was skating one of the boys elbowed one of the other boys causing Harvey to laugh. Her laugh was heard from across the rink by Adam. He looked at her and a smile immediately came across his face, hoping she would be on the team. "There's just one minor problem." Luis skated right into the glass, causing all of the new skaters to go and help him, all of them besides Harvey. "He has trouble stopping." Luis looked at his sister and smiled.
"I almost had it that time." She just stood there and laughed at her brother which piqued an interest in the coach.
"Why is she laughing?" The man turned towards Bombay and smiled.
"She's his twin." All the boys looked at the girl as she put her helmet on and began skating around the rink, the boys watching her as she went by. "Harvey "The Bandit" Mendoza. She's even faster than her brother and she can actually stop." Everyone watched as she quickly skated between players, kicking up snow as she went. "1.7 seconds, and that's not even the best part." The man looked at the girl and nodded. She gave him a smile before turning around and skating backwards. "She goes backwards even faster. 1.4 seconds, blue line to blue line." All the skaters watched in amazement, especially Adam. He just couldn't keep his eyes off her.
"Why do they call her The Bandit?" The girl came to a stop in front of them, stick in hand.
"Give me three of your best players, Gordon." The coach pointed to Charlie, Adam, and Connie. The man told them to get a puck and they told them to try to get past Harvey. The three chuckled at the word tried, but they didn't know just how good she was. Charlie went first, the puck was traveling inbetween his legs and all around him as he skated towards the girl, thinking that this would be the easiest little drill for him to do, but boy was he wrong. As soon as he came within three feet of her, she reached for the puck, and without him even knowing it, she had the puck at her feet. Then Connie went, and she put up a hell of a fight for the puck, but Harvey was better. Last but not least, was Adam. He had his helmet in his hand and looked at the girl, introducing himself.
"Adam Banks, its nice to meet you..." She pulled up her helmet and smiled.
"Harvey." He nodded at the girl as they both pulled their helmets back down. He skated towards her and as soon as he got close enough, he turned and pushed his back against her, but she stuck her stick between his legs and pushed the puck away from him, speeding her way around him to get the puck. She came to a quick stop in front of her brother, kicking snow in his face as she giggled and took off her helmet.
"I see why they call you The Bandit." She looked at the cowboy and smiled as the three Ducks made their way back to their team.
"Thank you, cowboy. You're up." The boy smiled at her and winked before skating to the middle of the rink with a puck.
"Yee Haw!" He took off his cowboy hat and threw it at Harvey. The girl smiled as she put it on her head while watching her new friend show off. "How's everyone doing? Y'all ready to play some puck?" The boys chuckled, hearing his thick country accent. Dwayne quickly put on his helmet and began showing off to Bombay and the team.
"That's Dwayne Robertson. He's from Austin. He's the best puck handler i've ever seen." The skaters laugh as Dwayne does a bunch of tricks with his stick and puck, but Bombay gives the man a questioning look.
"You mean for his age?" The man looks up at the coach and smiles, slightly shaking his head.
"No, I don't." Every now and then, Dwayne would yell yee jaw and laugh, but Adam didn't care, he was too busy watching Harvey to care. Next up was Julie. Harvey said that she would help Julie by shooting pucks at her, so they could both show off a little talent. "Julie "The Cat" Gaffney. She won the state championship for Maine three years in a row." Julie put on her helmet and began blocking almost every puck hit at her. Harvey might have hit a couple into the goal, but the coaches didn't care, she was just that good. "Ken Wu, what can I say? I convinced him that hockey had more of a future." The small boy did spins and turns, surprising everyone. Dwayne skated over to Harvey, messing with the cowboy hat on her head as he threw an arm over her shoulder in a friendly way. She smiled as they continued to watch Ken in awe. "With a stick in his hands, nobody's been able to touch him." Dwayne, Luis, and Harvey all looked at each other and nodded, impressed by the smaller boy. Then Dean skates out towards the middle, with his headphones on and his music blasting, he is ready. Dean slowly skated around the rink, singing and using his hockey stick as a guitar, causing Harvey to laugh. Adam looked up, hearing her laugh again and locked eyes with the pretty brunette, smiling at her. She blushed and smiled back before turning her attention back to Dean. He skated past the Ducks, knocking them down as he did. It brought a smile to Luis' face, knowing he wasn't the only one that ended up on their butt. He skated up to Harvey and Dwayne, draping an arm over both of their shoulders and turning to Dwayne.
"C'mon Texas, sing it with me!" Dwayne shook his head, scared of the six foot giant causing Harvey to let out a chuckle as she loudly sand along with Dean. They skated around, laughing a bit before he tossed his stick to Julie. "Here you go, sweetie."
"Who does this guy think he is?" They all skated towards each other, arguing as Julie, Connie, and Harvey stood there, laughing at the boys.
"Connie right? Are you dating the blonde?" Everyone that was on the rink could easily see her red cheeks as she nodded her head. She looked over at her boyfriend, only to see him not looking at her. As she was looking at the boys, she saw Adam staring at Harvey.
"Adam is looking at you, Harvey." Harvey snapped her head in his direction, making Adam look away before she could catch him. She just quietly chuckled to herself as the girls continued to watch the boys fight. As they were arguing, Bombay blew his whistle, catching everyone's attention. The girls skated over to the boys and joined their sides, Connie skated to the Ducks and Julie and Harvey skated to the new skaters. Harvey set Dwayne's hat on the bench and went back to standing next to him, in front of Adam.
