Bear, Mouse and Monkey all went out to play
In Bear's little garden, one fine summer's day.
They played with a skipping rope, jumped up and down,
They played with a ball, they bounced it around,
But soon they got tired and Bear shouted, "Phew!
These games were such fun but now what shall we do?"
Monkey jumped up, "I've had an idea!
Let's dig for treasure! Let's dig right here!"
"I'll get some spades. There are some in the shed.
What will we find down there?" little Bear said.
Monkey yelled out, "Who knows what's to be found,
Under Bear's garden, under the ground?
We might find some coins made of silver and gold,
Engraved with the kings and the princes of old,
Or a bright golden bowl or a big silver cup.
Who can imagine what things we'll dig up?
We might find some jewels or a huge golden crown . . ."
(Bear) "Here are the spades, friends! Let's start digging down."
(Monkey) "We might find some armour, made for a king,
A necklace of rubies, an emerald ring,
Or a sword made of steel that was forged in a fire,
The hilt decorated with pearl and sapphire . . ."
(Bear) "Look! I've found something! Oh what can it be?"
(Monkey) "It's treasure! We're rich! Quick! Quick! Let me see!
Is it a sword, forged in a fire with a hilt . . ."
(Bear)"Oh no! It's just an old tyre!"
(Mouse) "Look, Monkey! See what I've found! What's this thing?"
(Monkey) "Is it a necklace? An emerald ring?
Or a big silver cup or a bright golden bowl?"
(Mouse) "No no, it's a bucket that's got a big hole!"
(Monkey) "I've found something too! Hey! Look here, Mouse and Bear!"
It might be a chest full of coins that are rare.
It's big and it's dirty, let's give it a rub.
It's treasure! We're rich!"
(Bear) "No, it's just a bathtub!
Oh dear!" said the bear, "Our hopes are all sunk.
All we've dug up is some old, useless junk!"
(Mouse) "I wonder . . ." the mouse scratched his head with his paw.
"Is this junk really useless? Hmm . . . I'm not so sure.
It's old and unwanted, now that much is true,
But perhaps we could think of some things we could do?
Let's tie this old tyre with this rope to the tree,
Yes, you two should do it, you're taller than me.
Well, just look at that! It's A-MA-ZING!
We've made ourselves a tyre swing!
A holey bucket . . . Oh! I know!
Mouse, get on Bear's shoulders. Go on, up you go!
Now hang it up high from that hook in the wall,
We've made a hoop for basketball!
The bathtub now . . . What a surprise!
We've dug a hole the perfect size!
Let's put the tub in it. Watch out for your toes!
Now fill it with water. Bear, go get the hose!
Incredible! Look, you two, isn't that cool?
We've made ourselves a paddling pool!"
They happily played till the day was all done.
Who knew junk could be such fun?
