Chapter 4: The Woodland Sprite

Mouse Stew and Other TalesWords: 3731

The bear and the mole are out having some fun

In Bear's little garden, outside in the sun.

They play in the paddling pool, play with the ball,

They throw it up high through a hoop on the wall.

They swing on the swing until Mole says, "Oho!

It's getting quite late now, I think I should go.

I'd better get home, I've got so much to do,

There's cooking and dusting and hoovering too.

I might take a shortcut and go through the wood."

"Really?" says Bear, "Do you think that you should?

Is the wood really safe for a creature like you?

What if there's danger, Mole? What will you do?"

"Oh I'll be okay," says the Mole, "Bear don't worry!

I must be off now. Yes, I really must hurry.

Bye bye, see you soon." Bear sees Mole disappear

Off into the woods, then he has an idea.

Bear calls, "Woodland Sprite! Woodland Sprite! Are you there?

It's me! It's your friend! It's the little brown bear."

A flutter of wings and a bright flash of light,

Suddenly, magically, there is the sprite!

(Bear)    "That mole's gone off into the woods all alone,

Please, Woodland Sprite, will you help him get home?"

(Sprite)    "Bear, my dear Bear, consider it done!"

With a flash and a flutter, the woodland sprite's gone.

Hurrying home through the woods, little Mole

Is about to fall into a very deep hole.

Quicker than lightning, the Sprite flies right down

And lies down flat over the hole in the ground.

Mole runs straight across with a skip and a hop.

Mole doesn't notice. Mole doesn't stop.

But there's something much worse on the road up ahead.

A big ugly troll is scratching his head.

"I'm hungry! I need a small snack!" says the troll,

"A squirrel, a blackbird or maybe a mole . . ."

Sprite flies up high to the nearest treetop,

He picks off an apple and then lets it drop.

The apple falls down and it lands on Troll's head.

(Troll)    "An apple! Delicious! I'll eat that instead!"

Troll bites his apple. Mole runs straight past.

Mole doesn't notice. Mole's running fast.

Around the next corner, believe it or not,

Stand three warty witches around a big pot.

(Witch 1)    "Eye of frog, ear of vole,

Leg of newt, tail of mole . . ."

(Witch 2) "Tail of Mole? No, I didn't bring that.

I've got toenail of lizard, whisker of cat?"

(Witch 1)     "No, it says 'tail of mole,' the recipe's clear."

(Witch 3)     "Wait! I smell mole! There must be one near."

Sprite's smart, he gets down to work straight away.

Using sticks, rocks and stones, he blocks the mole's way.

"Hello? What's this here, made of stick, stone and rock?"

Says the little black mole. "Could it be a road block?

This is the way home but I cannot get through.

Oh well, I suppose there's just one thing to do:

I'll take a new path to get home through the wood.

Hmmm . . . maybe this one? Yes, this one looks good."

But the witches are coming, they're trying to spot

A mole with a tail to put into their pot.

Sprite knocks over the pot and the potion spills out.

"Oh no! Look! Our potion!" The witches all shout.

"It's spilled on the ground. Now it's flowing away.

We'll have to make potion another day!"

Mole doesn't see them, he's had a long run,

But Mole's nearly home now, his journey is done.

"Bear needn't have worried," says Mole, "I'm alright!"

"Now my work's done!" says the woodland sprite.
