Chapter 8: Mole's Christmas

Mouse Stew and Other TalesWords: 3581

'I'm off to the Bear's house,' says Little Black Mole,

As he pulls himself out of his little mole hole.

'He's busy preparing a fine Christmas tea.

I'm bringing some presents for under the tree.

'A ball for the monkey, a scarf for the bear,

Some gloves for the mouse and some crumpets to share,

An acorn cup hat for our friend Woodland Sprite.'

The mole is excited. His heart's warm and light.

He scampers along through the leaves and the grasses,

When suddenly, 'Blast! I've forgotten my glasses!

Hmm . . . What should I do? Should I turn and go back?

The party starts soon and it's heavy, this sack.

I mustn't be late and I don't want to hurry.

My vision's not bad although everything's blurry.

I'll just carry on to the party,' says Mole.

But round the next corner there lurks a big troll.

With goggly eyes and a nobbly nose,

And fat sausage fingers and long hairy toes.

This terrible troll's in a terrible mood.

He's coming this way and he's looking for food.

'I'm cross and I'm looking for someone to scare.

Small woodland creatures, you'd better beware!!

I'm hungry and angry. I'm coming to eat you!

Don't try and fight me, I'll easily beat you!'

But Mole doesn't hear him, he's singing a song

As he merrily, happily scampers along.

🎶 I'm going to Bear's house coz Bear is my friend 🎶

He sings as he scurries around the next bend.

Now Troll catches sight of the little black mole.

'Aha! Here's my lunch!' thinks the terrible troll.

The mole keeps on singing, 🎶 I'm off to see Bear 🎶

The troll bears his teeth, shakes his fists in the air.

But a big blurry figure is all Mole can see.

'How lovely!' thinks Mole. 'Someone's waving at me!'

The mole's waving back now. He's full of good cheer.

'Merry Christmas,' he shouts, 'and a happy new year!'

His eyes are all sparkly. His smile is so bright.

He's brimming with happiness, joy and delight.

The troll sees him smiling.

He's stunned.

He's surprised.

He's feeling a strange kind of feeling inside.

His heart's getting warmer. His frown-lines uncrinkle,

His mouth stretches sideways. His eyes start to twinkle.

He just wants to giggle. He's feeling quite dizzy.

His cheeks are all rosy. His tummy's all fizzy.

'I don't understand it,' the troll says. 'It's weird.

All of my anger has just disappeared.'

But Mole doesn't hear him. He doesn't look back.

He's running to Bear's house with gifts in a sack.

The troll's feeling giddy. He scratches his ear.

'Now what am I doing and why am I here?

My tummy is rumbling. I must need some food.

I've heard that that new vegan restaurant is good.

'They're doing a Christmas Lunch Special today.

Food, here I come!' and the troll runs away.

The mole has arrived at his friend the bear's house.

He's played with the monkey, the bear, sprite and mouse.

They've eaten potatoes and parsnips and peas

And carrots and trifle and crumpets and cheese.

They're opening  presents from under the tree

When Bear says to Mole, 'This is something from me.'

'Glasses!' the mole laughs. 'Oh, thank you, dear Bear!'

'You're welcome,' says Bear. 'Now you've got a spare pair.'

The mole's heart is shining with festive good cheer.

'Merry Christmas,' he says, 'and a Happy New Year.'

I've always wanted to write a Christmas story but I've never had an idea.

This one came to me on Christmas Eve and I wrote it over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

I was inspired by sandydragon1 's brilliant Reindeer James middle-grade story.

Thank you for reading Mole's Christmas.
