âOkay then.
â
Maggie took a deep breath and hit the answer button.
âHello?â She purposely made her voice sound sweet and delicate, drawing out the end.
Sanford paused mid-sip, looking at her with interest.
Her overly sweet tone gave him goosebumps.
On the other end, Jaelyn was surprised to hear a womanâs voice and hesitated, asking, âIs this Maggie?â
Keeping up her sweet act, Maggie replied, âYep, itâs me, Maggie.
Sanfordâs in the shower right now, but you can leave a message with me and Iâll pass it on when heâs done.
â
Sanfordâs hand shook a bit as he held his water glass, exchanging amused glances with the couple across from him, his eyebrow raised in unexpected delight.
He had challenged her to outsmart a rival and she had aced it!
After ending the call with nothing urgent from Jaelyn, Maggie breathed a sigh of relief.
Feeling the intensity of everyoneâs stares, she offered a shy smile.
âWas that alright?â
Rosalynn and Brian turned to Sanford, waiting for his verdict.
Twirling his glass, Sanford murmured, âNext time you get a call Like that, you donât have to delicately emphasize our relationship.
You can be bolder.
â
âHuh?â
Maggie shot him a puzzled look.
Sanford elaborated, âIâm curious how youâd sound on the phone while weâre doing the⦠well, you know.
â
The moans escaped from her lips would definitely knock a rival down a peg or two!
Maggie caught on belatedly, turning crimson.
He was laying on the saucy jokes thick.
Wasnât he in the slightest bit ashamed? But Maggie found he seemed totally chill about it.
Brian and Rosalynn caught the drift too.
It was a good thing they were all seasoned pros at taking jabs.
âSo, you two have patched things up, huh?â Rosalynn quizzed with keen interest.
Sanford glanced at Maggie.
âHave we?â
