At that moment, Karl was in the Lounge, engrossed in his laptop.
Maggie greeted him cheerfully.
âMaggie, why are you back alone? Whereâs your idol?â Karl asked, shutting his laptop with a
grin.
âRosalynn has gone home.

Maggie poured him water and took a seat across from him.
âWhat brings you to Skrix?â
âIâve been around this area for a couple of days meeting with a business partner, figured since youâre back, Iâd swing by,â Karl said, pulling out two boxes of pastries.
âI got you some Wragos local specialty treats.
Figured youâre homesick after all this time,â Karl added, handing over the pastries.
Maggieâs face lit up.
âThis is my favorite! Thanks a bunch, Karl!â
Karl beamed.
âKnew these would hit the spot.
â
He watched Maggie with a soft smile as she tucked her hair behind her ear, setting the pastries aside.
âKarl, do you have feelings for me?â
Maggieâs question took Karl by surprise.
He scratched his head, caught off guard.
Taking a deep breath, he decided to be upfront.
âYeah, Maggie, I do.
Wanna be my girlfriend?â
Maggie met his gaze and sighed.
âKarl, Iâm sorry.
Youâre a great friend, but thatâs all.
â
Karl nodded understandingly.
âYeah, I get it.
Youâre still into Sanford.
Iâll wait.
â
Heâd sensed this all along, so he kept his feelings to himself, hoping time might sway her.
If she moved on from Sanford, maybe then heâd have a shot.
âYou donât have to hold out hope.
Iâm giving Sanford another shot,â
Maggie said firmly.
Karlâs smile dimmed as he watched her.
âYouâre giving him another chance? Maggie, you know heâs getting hitched, right?â
Maggie persisted, âIâm aware, but he doesnât love his fiancée.
I believe thereâs hope.
â
Karlâs brow furrowed.
âMaggie, you remember how his mom treated you, right? Being his wifeâs no cakewalk.
