"TOXIC DEVOTION" (18+)1,109 words~6 min read

Aaradhya sat on a bench in the college courtyard, her textbook open, but her thoughts kept drifting.

Her mind wandered to him—the mysterious man who had quietly captured her heart.

It wasn’t obsession. It was simple, pure love. She barely knew him, but somehow, he had made a lasting impression.

Her fingers traced the edge of her notebook as she tried to focus, but her thoughts kept returning to him. She didn’t understand it, but it felt real.

Her phone buzzed, interrupting her thoughts. Aaradhya glanced at the screen—

it was a call from Dr. Mehra.

She smiled softly.

She knew him well—he had been her mentor during her internship at the hospital.

"Hello, Dr. Mehra," Aaradhya answered.

"Ms. Kapoor," his calm voice responded.

"I need your help with a patient. Are you free to see him?"

Aaradhya sat up, curious. "Of course. What’s going on?"

"I have a patient named Zeeshan," Dr. Mehra continued.

"He’s a complicated case—he suffers from multiple personalities, and one of them is fixated on you."

Aaradhya’s heart skipped a beat.

Fixated on me? She hadn’t even met the man.

"He refuses to speak to anyone else but you.

He insists on seeing you, and we believe you might be the only one who can get through to him."

Aaradhya paused, her mind racing. She had no idea why someone would be fixated on her, especially a patient she had never met.

But Dr.Mehra was someone she trusted,

and if he thought she could help, she would.

"Alright, I’ll come. When do you need me?"

"Now," Dr. Mehra replied. "It’s urgent."

The call ended, leaving Aaradhya standing there, her mind swirling with questions.

Zeeshan. A man she didn’t know, yet somehow, he needed her.

Aaradhya quickly gathered her things and headed to the hospital, her thoughts racing.

Multiple personalities?

She’d dealt with many challenging cases, but something about Zeeshan’s case felt different.

Why was Dr. Mehra asking for her? She couldn’t help but feel a bit unsettled, but her professional instincts took over.

She needed to understand what was going on.

When she arrived,

Dr. Mehra was waiting for her. His usual calm demeanor had a serious edge to it.

"Thank you for coming so quickly, Aaradhya," he said,

standing as she entered.

"I need to explain Zeeshan’s case to you.

It’s... quite unusual."

Aaradhya nodded, sitting down. "I’m ready."

Dr. Mehra sat opposite her, his hands clasped.

"Zeeshan suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder—two distinct personalities.

One is quiet, introverted, and reserved. The other is more intense, volatile. We’ve been making progress with the calmer side, but his other personality has been rejecting anyone but you."

Aaradhya raised an eyebrow. "Why me?"

"I can’t say for certain," Dr. Mehra admitted. "But Zeeshan believes you’re the key to helping him stabilize. He’s insistent on it.

I need your help to understand what’s going on with him."

Aaradhya took a deep breath. "Alright. Let’s meet him."

Dr. Mehra led her down the corridor to a secured room.

As they reached the door, he paused and turned to her. "Be careful. He’s unpredictable."

Aaradhya nodded, steeling herself. "I’m ready."

Inside, Zeeshan was seated, his eyes locked on her the moment she entered.

There was an unsettling calmness about him, but the intensity in his gaze sent a shiver down her spine.

Dr. Mehra moved to speak, but before he could, Zeeshan's voice interrupted.

"Leave," Zeeshan said, his tone quiet but commanding.

Dr. Mehra hesitated for a moment but then looked at Aaradhya. "If you're sure, I'll leave you two alone."

Aaradhya nodded. "I’ll be fine."

Dr. Mehra gave her a concerned glance but stepped out, leaving the door slightly ajar.

Zeeshan’s gaze never left her as the room grew heavy with silence.

Aaradhya took a step forward, carefully choosing her words.

"Zeeshan, Dr. Mehra told me about you. About your... condition."

Zeeshan’s eyes flickered with a shift in energy. His expression softened slightly, but there was an eerie stillness in his posture.

"I don’t need him," Zeeshan said, his voice almost a whisper now, "Only you."

Aaradhya raised an eyebrow. "Why me?"

Zeeshan didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he studied her, his gaze sharp.

"You’re different," he said finally. "I can’t trust anyone but you.

The others... they don’t understand me. You will."

Aaradhya felt a pull in his words, but she remained composed.

"I’m here to help, Zeeshan. Both of your personality..."

He leaned back in his chair, the calm personality taking over.

His features softened, and his voice was steady now.

"You’ll understand once you meet him. The other side of me."With a dark chuckle

Aaradhya took a slow, measured breath. "I’m ready to understand."

The air in the room thickened as a noticeable change passed over Zeeshan.

His expression grew more intense, his gaze unwavering as his posture shifted.

Aaradhya instinctively tensed, sensing a drastic change in the atmosphere.

Without warning, the energy in the room grew colder, sharper. His presence now was completely different, a force she hadn’t felt before.

"I’m here now," the voice was low and almost guttural, entirely unfamiliar.

Aaradhya’s heart raced. She instinctively stepped back, but she didn’t let the unease show. "I’m here to help you," she said firmly, keeping her voice steady. "I won’t leave."

The man—who wasn’t Zeeshan anymore—looked at her with eyes that seemed to see through her, as if searching for something.

His lips curled into a twisted smile.

"I don’t need anyone," he said coldly.

"But maybe you could be useful."

Aaradhya’s pulse quickened, but she didn’t back away.

"I’m here to understand," she repeated. "I’m not here to judge."

The man’s gaze softened slightly, as if considering her words.

He leaned forward, eyes never leaving hers, a dangerous edge lingering in the air.

"You’ll regret this," he whispered, his voice like a thread of warning.

Aaradhya stayed calm. She had to. "I’m not afraid."

He chuckled, a sound that echoed with menace. "You should be."

But despite his words, Aaradhya didn’t retreat.

This was just the beginning. She had to stay strong, to break through the walls he had built around himself, no matter how many different sides of him she had to face.
