Iâm not going to lie, it was actually kind of nice to be back in camp. I missed the action. Missed the work and documents. Missed my boys. Of course I would never tell them that. All of them already have such big egos. How have I gotten the most obnoxious troops in the whole army?
I was back in my office, looking over at some interesting files, when a knock came. I called them in and was surprised to see General Carter. He was a tough guy. Heâs very much built and always has a serious or angry face. He always wants to charge everything and use muscle instead of brains. We donât really get along.
âYes General Carter?â I say.
âMeeting.â He says then leaves.
âNice talking to you too.â I say to myself.
I head to the meeting room. I pass some of my men and greet them all. Once I walk into the meeting room, I realize Iâm the last to arrive. Everyone is sitting around a long table and I take my seat. I look around and notice two men Iâve never seen before. Both men smile at me but one of them seems to be more smirking than smiling. I studied them both. One of them seems to hold authority. Heâs clean shaven with his hair slicked back and big glasses on his face. I look at the other one that was smirking at me. His eyes are strangely dark, almost black. But what you really notice is the big scar on his cheek. It must have been a knife wound. As Iâm studying them, General Lake gets up and starts the meeting.
âNow that everyoneâs here. I have some important things to discuss with all of you.â General Lake looks at the two newcomers. âAs you can see, we have some people here who you all havenât met yet. This is General Demetri Dalch,â he points to the man with glasses. âAnd his second in command Robert Palinski.â He points to the one with the scar. âTheyâre the ones from Russia who have been helping us recently. We have formed an alliance and their going to be staying here to see how we operate and try to help us with our strategies.â He says.
General Dalch smiles at everyone. âItâs a pleasure to meet all of you.â He then looks right at me. âEspecially you General Berndt.â
âOh, thank you.â I say shyly.
Iâm not very good with compliments. General Dalch chuckles at my reaction but continues.
âYou really are something. First woman to be in the army AND becoming a General. I always wondered when this day would come. And now, because of you, we have turned this war around. Iâm glad to have met the famous Annalisa Berndt.â He says sincerely.
I look at him confusingly. âWhat do you mean âturned this war around?ââ
âOh you donât know?â General Dalch looks at General Lake. âYou havenât told her yet?â He asks.
âTold me what?â
âWell I was going to get to that but then General Dalch here, decided to just start talking nonstop.â General Lake says.
âSorry, I just get excited when I see such an interesting specimen.â General Dalch looks at me.
Specimen? Oh donât tell me heâs some kind of crazy scientist and wants to do experiments on me? I probably shouldnât tell him about my bizarre bloodlust.
âAnyways, what were you going to tell me?â I ask.
General Lake looks at me proudly. âApparently, that little battle in your town, has made you an idol.â
âAn idol?â
âYes. It seems that word has spread of the magnificent Anna Berndt and her troops. Everyone across America is talking about you, saying how youâre going to end this war and how weâre so lucky to have you.â He says.
I look away and let the information sink in for a minute. Then I finally process what he said. My head jerks up as I look at General Lake with wide eyes.
âWha-?â
âAmazing isnât it? Even the troops are hyped up and excited. Everyone in America is excited to see what Anna Berndt is going to do now.â
I just look at him. Lost for words.
âSo the President thought it would be a good idea to use you as an idol. You give people hope and thatâs exactly what we need right now. So Anna, what do you say?â General Lake asks.
I look around the table at all the other Generals. Everyone is smiling encouragingly, except for General Carter and Robert. Actually, Robert is sneering at me. I think heâs against me becoming famous. I donât trust Robert. Thereâs just something about him that doesnât sit right with me. I look back up at General Lake.
âWhy not? Whatâs the worst that could happen?â I say.
General Lakeâs face lights up. âGreat!â He then turns to everyone else. âNow on to our next topic. Robert here has given us some useful information it seems.â
I look at Robert suspiciously. âWhat kind of information?â I ask wearily.
âThe Russians intercepted one of Franceâs telegrams. Apparently France is trying to get Spain to work with them. Theyâre also planning something big.â General Lake looks around the table slowly, carefully looking at everyone in the eye. âTheyâre planning to nuke various parts of the U.S.â
Everyone starts yelling and cursing.
âThatâs impossible!â I yell. âOnly America knows how to make an atomic bomb. How did they figure it out? Not to mention the costs!â
âWeâre not sure. Maybe they somehow figured it out or maybe someone gave them the instructions. As for the money, they already have a considerable amount in debt, what's more to them at this point? Either way, weâre trying to keep this quiet in case there is a traitor in our army.â
âBut this is serious. We have to stop them right away.â Thatâs the first time General Robinson spoke this whole meeting.
âI agree but itâs going to be difficult. We found out that they wonât be able to do it for at least a month. So we have to take them out before then.â General Lake says.
General Carter grunts. âWell my men are ready now. Weâll go take them out right now!â General Carter gets up, just waiting for the word so he can go charging in.
I roll my eyes at him. âThis is a complicated mission General Carter. We canât just bust in and start swinging willy nilly.â I say.
He glares at me.
âGeneral Berndt is right. We need to think about this clearly. Robert actually came up with a plan that I believe will work.â General Lake says.
General Carter sits down and grumbles to himself. âWell what is it?â He asks.
General Lake looks at me. âGeneral Berndt. I believe it would be best to have your troops go in there and stop them.â He says.
âDidnât we just say we canât just barge in there?â I say.
âYes but your team is best at being stealthy. They can easily sneak into the core of France and take down the enemy.â
I freeze. âWait. You want me to sneak in with a whole army into the middle of France, where we will be severely outnumbered, and destroy the atomic bomb and basically take out anyone we can?â I ask.
âPrecisely.â He says.
I slam my hands on the table and jump up from my seat.
âBullshit!â
General Lake looks at me calmly. âNow General Berndt, I wouldnât assign this to you if I didnât think you could do it.â
âYouâre basically asking me and my men to go on a suicide mission. You know once weâre in there that weâll be alone. There wonât be any back up. And once weâre noticed, which we will be, we wonât be able to get out of there alive.â I say.
âYou donât know that for sure Anna.â General Carter says.
I whip my head in his direction. Heâs smirking!
âWe all believe in you.â His grin widens.
I look at him in disbelief. He wants me to die. Heâs betting on my death. I look at the others. General Robinson seems to be thinking before nodding.
âIt will stop them from bombing the U.S.â He says.
My mouth drops. I canât believe it. How could he agree? Just like that? I look at General Dalch and I see heâs studying me. He smiles.
âThat would definitely be interesting.â He says.
This canât be real. Theyâre really considering it. No, theyâre not just considering it, theyâre going to make me do it. I donât have a choice. Even if I refuse, theyâll just make my troops go in there alone. I canât let them do that. They wouldnât survive. At least with me, they have a chance. A very slim chance but still a chance.
Do they really hate me that much? They wouldnât do this to just anyone. Is it for publicity? Are they jealous? Or do they just hate me because Iâm a woman? Now that I think about, if I died in a tragic way that would inspire the people to rise up. And I would be out of the spotlight. They hate me. I just never realized it was to this extent. Theyâre hoping I die. They want to get rid of me, for more reasons than one.
I look at Robert. The slime ball that suggested the idea. He smiles at me evilly. I never had their trust. They saw me as an eyesore and Robert gave them an opportunity to get rid of me. I glare at him and his smile widens. Heâs challenging me and whether I like it or not, I have no choice but to accept.
âAlright. It seems I donât have a choice anyways.â Everyone smiles. âBut,â They look at me confused. âI get to prepare my men with whatever means.â I say.
âThatâs fine but you only have a month.â General Lake says coolly.
âOh donât worry. Thatâs plenty of time.â I say.
Even though I said that, I really didnât know if it was. I donât even know if my special training will help them but itâs the only chance we have to surviving.
âWhat are you going to do?â General Dalch asks.
I smile. âSpecial training.â
âOooo what kind?â He asks.
It seems I caught his interest again. And something tells me thatâs not a good thing.
âI was looking through some interesting files earlier. And it seems thereâs this island that no oneâs used for quite some time.â I say.
General Lake and Robinson stiffen.
âWhat island?â General Carter asks.
âOh you donât know? Itâs called Sobreviver Island. Itâs Portuguese for survive. Itâs an island used to help the men train but they stopped using that tactic over 30 years ago. I donât know why though. I thought it was good practice.â I say.
âIt didnât help the troops in the end. Thatâs why it was shut down.â General Lake says angrily.
Thatâs the first time Iâve seen him angry. Must mean Iâm doing something right.
âWell I believe this will be beneficial for my troops.â I say.
General Lake glares at me and I just smile at him. Weâll see who the real fool is in the end. Iâm going to protect and prepare my men to the best of my ability. If itâs one thing that we assassins are good at, itâs not failing.
âWell if thatâs all, Iâm going to go get everything ready. Weâll be gone for the whole month. Wish us luck Generals.â I open the door and before I leave I say, âAnd Robert.â And then close the door.

So I just wanted to say that I changed it from Europe to France. I know, Iâm stupid. Iâm not very good with geography and history. Kind of funny because of how my story is. Oh well. Anyways, sorry you didnât get to see any of the guys this chapter but this was vital information. Iâm setting up the scene for the climax. Thereâs probably going to be about 8 or so chapter left and maybe a prologue. Depends how I end it. So now is the time to tell me who you guys think Anna should end up with. I have two in mind but you can always change my mind or help me make up my mind. Well talk to you later lovelies.
