“Anna!”

I feel my senses coming back to me. I feel a tight grip holding my arms. My body is being shaken. My vision comes back to see a worry stricken Tristan. Once he sees that I’m coming back to my senses, he smiles and releases me. He takes a step back.

“Tristan! What happened?” I ask.

“You tell me. I noticed your bed being empty so I went looking for you and heard noises coming from the gym. When I came in, you started to attack me. You seemed to have had a killing intent. You tried to hit all of my crucial points. You almost got me too.” He says.

I then realize that I did hit him. A lot. He has bruises all over and I see him holding his shoulder.

“Oh my god! I’m so sorry Tristan! I didn’t mean to. Here let me take a look at your shoulder.” I say.

I take him to the bathroom in the building and he sits on the counter. I dampen a paper towel and take Tristan’s hand off of his shoulder. I gasp. I can’t believe I cut him so deep. How did I even cut him?

“You’re bracelet got me.” He answered my look.

I look down.

“Sorry. The bracelet is supposed to keep me safe but instead it hurt you.” I say.

I feel his fingers go to my chin and he lifts it up to look at him.

“It’s ok. You didn’t mean to. I’m just glad my princess didn’t hurt herself.” He says.

I look away.

“You know I hate sexists.” I hiss.

He just smiles. I apply the damp towel to his wound. He winces but doesn’t say anything. It’s not as bad as it seems. I guess I just overreacted a little.

“So who made that bracelet?” He asks.

“My sister.” I say casually. She’s like my little sister to me.

“Really? How old is she?” He asks.

I roll my eyes.

“She’s only 12 years old. So don’t you dare go there.” I say.

“Too bad. She’ll probably grow up as a beauty if she’s related to you.” He winks.

“Ha! She will grow up beautiful but it won’t be because we are related.” I say.

“You guys aren’t related to each other?” He asks.

“Nope.” I say.

“So how did you get her?” He asks.

“I took her in when her parents died. She’s the reason I even agreed to this military thing. I want to protect her from any more pain.” I say, sadly.

“I know what you mean but you can’t always protect her. The world can be a terrible place and she needs to learn.” He says.

“Not if I can help it.” I say.

He laughs. I finish his shoulder and throw out the towel. I look up at him. He’s still smiling but there’s something in his eyes. I can’t put my finger on it.

“Tristan.”

“Hmm?”

“Why did you decide to go into the military?”

There’s a pause.

“Because my wife died from childbirth and at the time Officer Russell came to find me. I didn’t care what happened to me so I joined. I didn’t care if I died or not.”

I look down.

“Sorry. I’m not good with this kind of stuff.” I say.

He laughs again.

“Don’t worry about it. After I joined, I realized my wife would scold me to no end if I died right now. She always hated this war. She thought it was so silly. So, I’m going to end it for her.” He says, proudly.

I look back up at him and smile.

“That’s a great reason.” I say.

“Are you saying it’s very princely of me, princess?” He takes my hand and puts his lips to my hand. He looks up from my hand. “May I be your knight in shining armor?” He asks.

I just roll my eyes and pull my hand from his.

“Please. I don’t need anyone’s help” I say.

I start to walk away but a hand grabs mine and turns me back around. I lightly slam into Tristan’s chest. He keeps his hold on my wrist. I look up at him, about to yell at him when I see his face. He’s so serious. He leans down to my ear.

“Anna.” He whispers and I shiver. “You’re the one person who needs the most help. If you ever need me, I’ll come running. Trust me.” He says.

My body starts to relax but I go against its wishes and pull away. I feel myself collapsing inside but put on a mask.

“Ha! Please Tristan. I’m probably the only sane person here. I can handle anything.” I turn and go towards the door. I stop before I walk out. “Besides, I don’t trust anyone.” I walk out, leaving Tristan to his own thoughts.
