Chapter 143
Brandon popped into Ephemora because there was some trouble at the hotel here. He didnât want to stir the pot, but they didnât get into the nitty-gritty of
the matter.
Sophia was clueless about whether Darcy was still with the Starlight Group or not.
He looked just like he did two years ago, short and portly, but without the pep in his step he used to have. He looked way more worn out and down in the dumps.
As Sophia craned her neck to get a better look at him, Darcy glanced down at her, noticed the tea heâd spilled but just peeped it and didnât even mutter an âIâm sorryâ before he breezed past her to greet the tall, skinny guy behind her with a warm double-handed wave, âMs. Barlow.â
Among Sophiaâs acquaintances, only Marian had it.
She couldnât help but take a second look at the lanky dude-it was the same guy sheâd bumped into in the Starlight Hotelâs underground parking lot two years ago.
Zachary caught Sophia peeking and glanced over at the pair before turning to her, âDo you know this guy?â
Sophia chuckled and shook her head, âNope. Just thought that guy was kinda rude. Bumps into someone and canât even apologize.â
âNo point sweating the small stuff with that kind of person.â
Sophia nodded with a smile, âYeah.â
But maybe because of the past episode where Brandon had deliberately avoided Darcy, even though Sophia kept her cool and kept eating, she couldnât help but eavesdrop on their conversation a bit.
The restaurant wasnât crowded, and Sophiaâs table was close to theirs, so if she listened carefully, she could make out their chat.
At first, the two just exchanged pleasantries, but then the skinny guy asked Darcy, âHow are things on your end?â Sophia heard Darcy chuckle and say, âOh, itâs all good. You think Ms. Barlow needs to worry when Iâm on the job?â followed by the so-called âMs. Barlowâ laughing heartily, replying, âWorrying about Mr. Darcy doing his thing? Thatâs the last thing Iâd do.â
Darcy also let out a few hearty laughs before getting down to brass tacks, âIâve already got the person in place at the company, rest easy.â
The tall and skinny guy said, âIs the person reliable?â
Darcy said, âAbsolutely. You know how tough it is to get into the Starlight Group. Solid HR, barely any turnover, hardly any external recruitment spots open each year. If they hadnât started this new subsidiary and needed fresh faces, who knows how long it wouldâve been-till kingdom come, probably.â The mention of âthe Starlight Groupâ made Sophia pause mid-sip. The skinny guy laughed and said, âThen Iâll await the good news from Mr. Darcy.â Their conversation didnât seem to have any smoking guns.
But maybe because of Brandonâs past covert investigation, Sophia couldnât shake the feeling that their words had layers, like there was some scheme brewing.
Sophia wasnât sure if she was just being paranoid.
Later, when she got home, Sophia couldnât help but ask Susan, âSusan, do you know this Darcy guy? The head honcho at the Starlight Groupâs Ephemora branch.â
âSure do.â
She was always up to speed with business info, especially for the deals she had clinched herself.
But then..
âWhy the sudden interest in him? Wasnât he booted from the Starlight Group ages ago?â Susan asked, puzzled..
âHuh?â Sophia looked at Susan in surprise.
âDidnât you know? Not long after Brandon returned to the country, he axed the head of the Starlight Hotelâs Ephemora branch and nearly snagged the Barlow Hotel too.â
Sophia shook her head, clueless. Sheâd cut ties with Brandon and had blocked all news related to him since then.
âItâs no wonder youâre out of the loop. Word is, Brandon kept it hush-hush out of respect for Darcyâs long service. Just spun it as a âstaff reshuffleâ and replaced the head of the Ephemora branch,â Susan explained, âI was tracking the Starlight Hotel project at the time, so I caught some of the gossip on the down-low, not much though.â
Sophia nodded thoughtfully, her mind racing back to Darcyâs words about having âalready got the person in place at the company, rest easy,â and âIf they hadnât started this new subsidiaryâ¦â She kept replaying those lines in her head.
âWhatâs up?â Susan asked, seeing Sophiaâs pensive look.
Sophia shook her head, âNothing much. Just ran into Darcy and some guy at the restaurant with my teacher today. They mentioned the Starlight Group. and I got curious.â
That reminded Susan of Sophiaâs lunch with Zachary, âOh right, what did the teacher need from you?â
âJust encouraging me not to give up on opportunities too easily.â
âSee, everyone who knows you thinks itâd be a shame.â
Sophia nodded silently, still deep in thought, the conversation with Darcy playing on loop in her mind.
Theresa, who had been engrossed in her fishing game, finally noticed Sophiaâs silence, looked up with her big, round eyes, tugged on her clothes with her tiny hand, and called out in her baby voice, âMommy?â
1/2
Sophia turned her gaze to her, squatted down in front of her with a smile and asked, âWhatâs up, Theresa?â
Theresa shook her head and handed Sophia the fishing rod, âMommy fishy-fishy, happyâ¦
Sophia chuckled and stroked her little head as they played the fishing game together. The little one was beaming with joy.
Sophia couldnât help but look at her and softly asked, âTheresa, do you wanna go home?â
The little girlâs small mind couldnât quite grasp what Sophia meant by going home, but after pondering seriously, she nodded vigorously, âWant to.â
