Chapter 161
âYup, she also ran into Sophia,â Don admitted without beating around the bush.
âWhat did she say to Sophia?â Brandon asked, his voice getting chillier by the second.
âNothing too outrageous, just prying into whether the position of Design Director was your divorce settlement to her,â Don said with a little head shake and a chuckle, glancing at Brandon. âYou know how your mom is, always caring about keeping up appearances in front of others. But man, the way she looks at Sophia, itâs like she canât even stand her. Youâre busy, I get it, but you gotta keep an eye out now and then, see how your folks are getting on with your wife.â
Don gave Brandonâs shoulder a pat. âItâs not about how they act when youâre around, but what goes down when your back is turned.â
Brandon turned to him.
Don raised his hands in a surrender gesture. âDonât give me that look, man. Iâm just worried your momâs gonna scare off my people. It was hard enough getting her on board in the first place.â
With that, he didnât linger, quickly saying âIâm heading back to the officeâ and made a beeline for the door.
Watching the office door close, Brandon hit the intercom for Kent. âCome in here for a sec.â
Kent dropped what he was doing and came in. âMr. Crawley, whatâs the matter?â
âGet Patricia over to my office.â
Kent froze. ã
Brandon didnât often call Patricia by her first name.
Back in the day, heâd politely refer to her as âMomâ in private, and at the company, heâd get people to call her âMrs. Crawleyâ out of courtesy, rarely ever just Patricia.
âAnything else?â Seeing Kent zone out, Brandon asked in an even tone.
Kent snapped back to reality. âNope, on it right now.â
After leaving Brandonâs office, Kent called Patriciaâs assistantâs office, passing on the message that Brandon wanted to see her. âMrs. Crawley just stepped out,â came the polite reply on the phone.
âStepped out?â Kent frowned. Didnât Don just come back from Patriciaâs office a moment ago?
âWhen did she leave?â he asked.
âJust a few minutes ago,â they replied.
âAny idea when sheâll be back?â
âSheâs not coming back today, said she had something to do.â
âIs that so?â Kentâs brow furrowed deeper, âAlright, thanks.â
Hanging up, Kent reported back to Brandon.
âWhere could she be off to during work hours?â Brandon asked, âCheck with HR, see if she took leave. If not, itâs considered skipping work.â
Kent was stunned.
He didnât even need to think about it. Of course, Patricia wouldnât have asked for leave.
Who in HR would dare to mess with the CEOâs mom?
Brandon said, âAlso, have HR check her clock-in records. Any missed days are skips, and five no-shows mean termination, as per company policy.â
Kent kept silent.
Seeing Kent still standing there, Brandon looked up. âWell? What are you waiting for?â
Kent gave a sheepish smile. âMr. Crawley, isnât this a bit much?â
He was worried Brandonâs dad would blow a gasket over this.
Patricia was Danielâs insert into the company, after all, Patricia, the CEOâs mom â basically, it was her company. No one would dare question whether she clocked in or not. Knowing Patricia, she wouldnât be bending over backwards to follow the rules, let
alone stick to a strict clocking in schedule.
âToo much?â Brandon asked flatly. âAs the company leader, she doesnât set an example and even leads the way in skipping work. Who gave her that right?â
*Kent was at a loss for words.
âIâm on it now.â
He didnât dare say more and quickly left to handle it. Not wanting to cause a fuss, he personally went to HR to ask.
As Brandon expected, no leave was taken, and no clocking in either.
Kent reluctantly conveyed Brandonâs decision to terminate, as per company policy.
HR was stunned by this turn of events. The staff didnât dare issue the notice and quickly informed the HR manager to deal with it personally.
Everyone knew Patricia was Brandonâs mom, but the stepmom bit, not so much.
Patricia had married Daniel when Brandon was just a kid, spending over a decade devoted to family life, staying out of company affairs. Plus, after over twenty years of marriage, the old company hands had long been replaced. Those in the know were no longer around.
To the current staff, unaware of the backstory, the news of Brandon wanting to terminate Patricia was shocking. The HR manager, after much thought, reported it up to the general manager.
The general manager, who also answered to the CEO, didnât hesitate upon hearing it was an order from the CEOâs office. They instructed the HR manager to issue the notice but, considering Patricia was Brandonâs mother and not sure if there was some family feud, they didnât want to make too much noise and had HR send á termination email to Patricia as per company policy. When Patricia received the HR termination email, she was busy lunching with Daniel and the Frost family.
