Chapter 44
âMaybe, Sophiaâs voice trailed off as she tilted her head away, âJust had a bit more time to brace myself, I guess.â
Her calm words somehow managed to ignite a fierce glint in Brandonâs eyes.
With a flick of his long fingers, he pinched her chin, forcing her to look at him.
âYou have been prepping for this for over half a year, huh?â he asked, his voice eerily calm yet frightening.
He hadnât forgotten the day she got the acceptance call from Apex Engineering University When he asked how long sheâd been preparing, sheâd said six months.
Sophia gave a small nod, silently agreeing.
Brandon didnât reply, just stared at her expressionlessly, his Adamâs apple bobbing violently with his emotions.
He didnât utter a word, just watched her with that same blank expression.
Sophia had no clue why Brandon was suddenly raking up the past.
It wasnât like she had kept their divorce a secret from him, nor had she bolted. Right from the start, sheâd been upfront. about wanting a divorce, and heâd agreed without probing for reasons or needing an explanation. Just a simple âokayâ had ended their marriage, more decisively than she could have managed. Even when they bumped into each other in their neighborhood later, and he found out sheâd been considering divorce for six months, heâd been the one to coolly say take care before walking away, clean and swift, without dragging his feet. Even on the day she left at the airport, him upstairs, her downstairs, his gaze was calm and distant, with no signs of lingering attachment or care. Now, barely a month later, she didnât understand why Brandon was suddenly bringing up old times.
Was it because of the baby?
Her hand instinctively touched her still-flat belly, and Sophia realized that all the changes seemed to start after he learned of her pregnancy
Brandon noticed where her hand rested and glanced at her.
âItâs not about the kid, he said, his gaze pausing on her chin which he had been holding, before releasing her.
âSorry,â he said, returning to his usual composed self.
âItâs okay, Sophia replied softly, her gaze lowered, not looking at him.
âYou should go back to your room and rest. Iâll call you when dinnerâs ready,â Brandon said, smoothing her tousled hair.
Sophia just nodded obediently, âOkay.â
Brandon watched her go back to her room, only looking away after the door closed.
The lingering light of the sunset poured through the window.
Sophia stood there, gazing at the still unfamiliar street outside.
Brandonâs breath from just a moment ago still clung to her lips.
His slightly labored breathing and anger also seemed to echo in her ears.
She found Brandon a bit hard to read, actually. He was usually so composed and steady that it was rare to see him show emotion like this. She didnât quite understand his sudden mood swing.
This wasnât the Brandon she knew.
But she wasnât presumptuous enough to think that Brandon began to love her.
They didnât have that kind of emotional foundation
Her hand drifted to her belly again.
Sophia had a hunch that Brandonâs change of heart began with the knowledge of the childâs existence.
He had always liked kids and naturally wouldnât want his child to grow up in a broken home.
Chapter 44
At that moment, her phone buzzed with a WhatsApp video call.
It was Susan.
Sophia hit the answer button
âStill up?â Sophia asked, glancing at the time. It was well past midnight back home.
Susan yawned, âSleep? No time for that, Iâve been swamped. Just finished discussing a contract.â
Sophia frowned, âWhat contract is keeping you up so late?â
âItâs the deal with Brandonâs Starlight Hotel joining our business district.â Susan began to vent before catching herself, remembering she wasnât supposed to bring Brandon up around Sophia. She clamped her mouth shut and gave herself a playful slap on the lips. She hadnât forgotten what Sophia had told her about not wanting to hear about Brandonâs whereabouts
Sophia chuckled at her friendâs frustration. Itâs fine, keep going.â
And then she inquired, âHavenât you sealed that project deal yet?â
Susan replied, âItâs not that easy. Weâve been haggling over the contract for days, going back and forth with amendments. Brandon is a tough cookie, no, itâs their legal department thatâs the pain in the neck.â
After complaining, she couldnât help but pout at Sophia, âI was thinking of asking Brandon for a fast track, you know, to discuss and make changes directly, so itâs easier for everyone. But I have no idea where heâs disappeared to Iâve been to their office a bunch of times and canât find him. Even that Kent guy wonât spill the beans, just says Brandonâs on a business trip with no return date. At this rate, your baby will be born by the time we finalize this contract.â
Then she looked at Sophia with concern, Oh right, howâs your morning sickness been these past few days? Iâve been so busy I forgot to ask.
âIâm fine, donât worry about me,â Sophia reassured quickly. âItâs you Iâm worried about, staying up so late. Take care of yourself.
âIâm young, Iâll be fine, Susan yawned as she stood up, âTomorrow Iâll try to get hold of that Kent again, see if I can catch Brandon at work. Their legal team is too domineering, and ours isnât just for show. I feel like Iâm being ground down in the middle here.
Seeing Susanâs clearly worn-out face, Sophia felt uneasy, âWhy donât you send me the contract? I can show it to Brandon for you. Heâs here in Wye City.â
âWhat?â Susan stopped mid-yawn, shocked, âDid Brandon follow you to Wye City?â
âNo, heâs here on business, and we just ran into each other, Sophia clarified softly.
This is some crazy coincidence. The worldâs so big and yet you bump into each other,â Susan shook her head, amused. Only then did she notice the unfamiliar background behind Sophia and paused, bewildered, âYouâre not with Brandon right now, are you?â
Sophia hesitated, then nodded, âIâm staying with him for now. He found out about my pregnancy.â
âHow did he figure it out so darn fast? He didnât plant a tracker on you or something, did he?â
Sophia chuckled, âAs if heâs got that kind of time to kill. It was just a fluke, really. Heâs pretty perceptive, you know, so itâs like, trying to keep something under wraps from him is just impossible.â
Susan nodded in agreement. âTrue that. So whatâs the game plan now?â she asked, âGonna keep the baby and raise it together, or are you thinking of getting back together? Or maybe not keeping it?â
âI donât know,â Sophia sighed, âIâm just playing it by ear. But getting back together is definitely off the table. Weâre just not a good match.â
Outside the door, Brandonâs hand paused mid-air, just about to knock.
He had just finished making dinner and was about to call Sophia to eat, not expecting to overhear her phone call
He glanced at the closed door, his fingers twitched, but he didnât knock.
Chapter 44
He hadnât meant to eavesdrop on their conversation, but he accidentally stumbled upon it.
âWeâre just not a good match.â
Sophiaâs unique, soft voice echoed in his mind. Brandon didnât know what she meant by ânot a good matchâ with him.
But the anger that had finally settled within him was now being stirred up again by her words.
He tumed his head slightly to calm the storm inside.
The conversation in the room continued, Susanâs voice on speakerphone filtered through the door. âNo worries, take your time to think it over. Whatever decision you make, Iâve got your back unconditionally. Like I said before, if you decide to have the baby, Iâm here to help you raise her. And if you decide not to, I respect your choice. Donât feel pressured
âAlright, Iâll think about it. Donât worry about me, Sophiaâs voice followed, âSend me the contract, and Iâll have a look for
you
âWill do.â
Brandon took a deep breath and after a moment of silence, he knocked on the door.
Sophia had hung up the phone and was looking at the contract Susan had sent over. Hearing the knock, she turned her head towards the door, got up, and opened it.
Brandon stood at the door.
âLetâs eat,â he said.
Sophia nodded. âOkay.â
She turned off her phone and joined him.
The dinner was already spread out on the table.
Brandon ladled some soup for Sophia and passed it to her. She instinctively stood up to take it. âIâve got it.â
Brandon avoided her reaching hand.
âIâve got this.â
He managed to place the soup bowl in front of her without letting her touch it, then served her a bowl of rice.
âThanks, Sophia said politely.
Brandon didnât reply, just served himself some soup and sat down opposite her.
Sophia could clearly sense the tense atmosphere that had started in the car that afternoon was still there. She opened her mouth to speak, but upon seeing Brandonâs overly composed face, she fell silent again and started sipping her soup with a spoon.
Brandon, too, was quiet, sipping his soup.
Sophia wasnât used to this kind of cold-war atmosphere.
After a while, she looked up at him. âDid anything bad happen today? Or did I do or say something wrong?â
Brandon looked at her. âItâs not about you. Itâs on me.â
Sophia shook her head slightly, absentmindedly stirring her soup, then looked at him âIs it because I mentioned Yolanda. It seems like all your mood changes started with her. If you donât like it, I wonât bring her up ever again. But donât shut me out like this. It makes me unsure how to interact with you.â
Brandonâs grip on his spoon tightened slightly, then he looked at her calmly. âI really donât like hearing about Yolanda. Donât mention her again.â
Sophie nodded. âOkay.â
But her compliance didnât soothe Brandonâs irritation. The atmosphere remained tense.
Sophia ganced at him, slightly puzzled. âIs there something else?â
Chapter 4
Brandon looked at her, and just when she thought he would default to his usual âitâs nothing,â he spoke slowly. âWhere exactly do we not match up?â
Sophia was overwhelmed for a moment.
