Chapter 5
Sophia didnât have some kind of super memory. It was just that Laura had always had it in for her since she was a kid. Lauraâs favorite line was, âIf your dad hadnât picked you up, youâd have starved to death by now. Weâve fed you, housed you, sent you to school How have we ever wronged you? Is it too much to ask for a little help around the house?â
With that kind of nagging in her ear day in and day out, it wouldâve been tough for her not to take notice.
She used to get really upset about it when she was little, not understanding why she wasnât like everyone else, why she didnât have parents who doted on her But now that she had grown up, she had come to terms with it. Maybe some folks were just dealt a thinner deck when it comes to kin-whether it was parents, kids, or even spouses. They were just not meant to stick around long, and it seemed she was fated to go it alone in this life
Lucky for her her dad, Haley Yearwood, had always been decent to her
He was the one who found her, and the first person she saw when she came to after passing out with a high fever.
Sophia couldnât really remember what went down back then, but she had this fuzzy memory of being alone out in the middle of nowhere for a long time, freezing cold and starving, scared out of her wits every day So when she woke up to Haley holding and comforting her she felt this deep sense of kinship and a bit of fear. She clung to Haley and wouldnât let go. When they couldnât find her family. Haley felt sorry for her and decided to keep her and adopt her.
Truth be told, their family wasnât in the best position to take in another mouth to feed, and Laura certainly wasnât keen on looking after someone else. But she couldnât win against Haleyâs resolve and ended up having to keep Sophia.
Haley had been a pushover his whole life, except for the one time he put his foot down about keeping her. Even though he wasnât able to provide the kind of care and protection a father should, given his constant work outside, Sophia still had a lot of respect and gratitude for Haley.
She had come back this time just to see Haley before she went abroad, knowing it wouldnât be as easy to return once she left the country.
Laura, not getting a response from Sophia, had escalated to throwing a fit outside, banging pots and pans around.
Whatâs going on now? Haleyâs voice came from outside the door.
Your precious daughter that we picked up! Do you have any idea how hard itâs been for us to raise her all these years? If not for us, who knows, she might be still grafting away on some assembly line. And would she have had the chance to marry into a family like Brandonâs? Look at her now, acting all high and mighty, too good for her own folks. Whatâs wrong with helping out the family now that sheâs made something of herself?â
Haleyâs voice perked up with surprise, âSophiaâs back?â
As his voice trailed off, there was a knock at the door.
Sophia went to open it and saw Haley standing there.
âDad, she said softly
Haley stepped in, lowering his voice, âDonât mind your mom. Sheâs all talk.â
Sophia nodded slightly, âMhm.â
Haley asked, âWhat brings you back all of a sudden? Whereâs Brandon?â
Sophia hesitated, then came clean, âWe got divorced.â
Divorced? Haleyâs expression turned serious, âWhy?â
Sophia simply said, âWe werenât right for each other.â
Haley frowned, âIs it because of your mom and brother?â
Sopha shook her head, âJust tell them not to bother hirn anymore.â
Haley looked hesitant. It wasnât that he wanted to go, but he couldnât convince Laura and Aaron: Laura called the shots
Sophia understood his predicament and smiled, âDonât worry, Iâll talk to them. I just came to see you today Iâve been accepted into a graduate program abroad and Iâm leaving tomorrow. Itâs a two-year program and I probably wonât be able to visit often, so take care of yourselfâ
She took out a bank card from her purse, Thereâs some money on this card. Keep it for now and let me know if you need more.â
Haley quickly tried to give it back, âYouâll need the money abroad. Keep it, I have enoughâ
âNo, Iâm good, Sophia insisted, pushing the card back into his hand.
Haley, realizing she was leaving the next day, felt a sudden pang of sadness, âWhy are you leaving so suddenly? Studying abroad is such a big step. Isnât studying here good enough?â
âI just wanted a change of scenery, to see the world a bit. Donât worry, two years will fly by. Sophia reassured him, and seeing Haley still looking worried, she added, Besides, the School of Architecture I got into is ranked fourth in the world. Iâm so lucky to have been accepted
That seemed to cheer Haley up, his pride mixed with relief, âThatâs great. I always knew youâd go far.â
Sophia smiled.
âAunt Sophia, a sweet little voice called out, and as the words fell, a two-year-old girl had already wrapped herself around Sophiaâs legs.
Sophia bent down to scoop her up, âBetty, did you have fun out with your mommy?â
The little girl nodded vigorously, turning to look at her mother, Barbara Yearwood, who had followed her into the house.
Barbara, Aaronâs wife, had been his high school sweetheart, and they got married a couple of years after graduating from college. They had this daughter two years ago.
Barbara was a looker and a go-getter, starting from the bottom as a simple insurance sales rep and climbing her way up to sales director, raking in a hefty annual salary. All her earnings, though, were poured into Aaronâs business ventures, which just seemed to evaporate.
Barbara never seemed to mind that Aaron wasnât working or taking care of the kid, and she didnât kick up a fuss, just soldiered on, earning the bread and raising their child.
Sophia couldnât fathom what spell her brother had cast on Barbara to make her so willing to support him for years on end. If she had to break it down, it probably boiled down to Aaronâs sweet talk and the emotional value he brought to Barbara.
Barbara and Sophia werenât exactly chummy, but when Barbara caught Sophiaâs gaze, she politely greeted her. âSophia, welcome back.â
Sophia acknowledged with a âMhm,â her attention returning to the little tyke snuggled against her neck, tickling her playfully.
Laura had followed into the room by then, seeing the tenderness in Sophiaâs eyes and couldnât resist being snarky, âIf you love kids so much, you better hurry up and have your own. Otherwise, when he finds someone else to have kids with, youâll be the one crying about it.â
After saying that, she couldnât help but mutter, âI have no clue what you were thinking back then. So young, yet couldnât even keep a baby. If you had that kid, we wouldnât have to grovel and beg like this now.â
Sophiaâs expression faded a bit, and looking up at her, she said, âMom, Iâve already divorced Brandon. Please donât bother them anymoreâ
Laurs and Aaron were both taken aback, âWhat?â
Sophia didnât elaborate. She had a flight that evening and needed to pack her bags. After bidding Barbara and Haley goodbye, the left first.
Laura and Aaron were still trying to process the news.
âis that for real? How come theyâre suddenly divorced?â
Haley sighed. âYes, itâs true. Sheâs leaving tomorrow.â
Aaron frowned, âWhere is she going?â
Haley replied, âShe said sheâs going back to school for two years.â
Aaronâs frown deepened, but he didnât say anything more. However, he couldnât keep things to himself and was worried, so he headed to Brandonâs company that afternoon.
Upon arriving at the reception, he went straight to the front desk girl. âIâm here to see Brandon.â
The receptionist smiled at him, âHello, do you have an appointment?â
Aaron retorted âHeâs my brother-in-law Why would I need an appointment?â
And with that he headed for the elevator
The receptionist quickly tried to stop him. âSir. Iâm sorry, I need to confirm with Mr. Crawleyâs office first.â
Aaron, acting like he didnât hear her pressed the elevator button and tried to barge through, but security quickly stepped forward to stop him, Sir, Iâm sorry, you need an appointment to enter the company. Please understand.â
âI told you he s my brother-in-law, just let your boss know.â
Aaron was getting impatient and attempted to continue his way, but the security couldnât let him go. Just then, Kent returned from outside and saw the commotion.
âWhatâs going on here?â he asked as he approached.
âKentâ the security guard greeted him respectfully. âThis gentleman claims to be Mr. Crawleyâs brother-in-law and wants
to see him.â
Kent looked Aaron over skeptically, not seeing any resemblance to Sophia.
Aaron could tell what Kent was thinking.
âSophia really is my sister. If you donât believe me, go ask Mr. Crawley.â
Somewhat surprised Kent thought for a moment, then told the security, âLet him go up.â
Security let him through
Aaron wasnât mad at him, just pointed to himself, âI told you Mr. Crawley is my brother-in-law and you didnât believe me.â
After that he followed Kent to the CEOâs office on the top floor.
âWait outside for a moment, Iâll notify Mr. Crawleyâ
When they reached the outer office, Kent whispered instructions and then knocked on Brandonâs office door, âMr. Crawley.â
âCome in!â Brandonâs deep voice came from the office.
Kent pushed the door open, about to speak, when Aaron pushed the door wider from behind him and stepped in.
âBrandon, have you divorced Sophia?â
Kent was speechless.
Brandon glanced at him.
Kent suddenly felt a chill down his spine, âMr. Yearwood came in by himself.â
Aaron waved has hand dismissively. âYeah, Iâm just worried.â
Then he looked at Brandon, âWhatâs the deal with you two? How come youâre suddenly divorced? Sophiaâs leaving
Kent noticed Brandonâs hand pause on the mouse, looking at Brandon
Sanderâs expression remained calm. He looked at Amron. âDo you need something?â
Aaron suddenly felt a bit embarrassed, âActually, no big deal. I just heard about the divorce. Iâm worried about you guys.â
Brandon replied, âThereâs nothing wrong with us.â
Aaron breathed a sigh of relief, âThatâs what I thought. A little spat between husband and wife is totally normal. Women, you know, just need a little sweet talk.â
Brandon didnât respond
Aaron felt increasingly awkward. âBy the way, Brandon, about that resort project last time.â
Brandon turned to look at him. âThat project isnât under my management.â
Aaronâs smile faltered, but he forced it to stay on. âI see
His hands rubbed together, feeling lost
He had always been straightforward, making friends with everyone easily, sometimes without a sense of boundaries, and he never felt shy in front of wealthy families, but this time, he felt awkward for the first time.
Brandon, sensing his dejection and embarrassment, softened his tone, âBy the way, isnât your mom looking at houses in the Maple District?
âYeah, we were thinking about it. Since Sophiaâs coming home without a place to stay, we figured weâd get a bigger house We were even thinking of asking you guys to chip in for the down payment Aaronâs voice trailed off, not daring to mention that Sophia had objected.
Brandon nodded, âIâll have Kent transfer it over later.â
Patricia walked in just then, pausing when she overheard, glanced at Aaron.
Aaron perked up again, I knew Sophia wasnât wrong about you. Brandon, youâre a man of vision. Your business is bound to thrive
Patricia turned her face away in disgust, her little gesture not escaping Brandonâs notice.
He looked at Patricia, What is it?â
Patricia masked her distaste, âI came to see Kent. I have to fly to the northwest tomorrow, Nell took a leave, and if Kent is free, can you take me to the airport?â
Speaking, she turned to Kent.
Kent nodded immediately, âSure, Mrs. Crawley.â
Patricia replied, âIâll have someone send you the flight info.â
After speaking, she glanced over Aaron, then at Brandon, as if she had more to say
âMom, you can go now, Brandon dismissed her directly, âNext time you come, please let someone announce it first.â Patricia looked at him, nodded reluctantly, and left without another word.
Aaron, confused, watched Patriciaâs retreating figure, then turned to Brandonâs indifferent handsome face, âDo you have a bad relationship with your mom?â
âNo.â A very cold response.
Aaron shrugged it off, just a casual question, but he thanked Brandon somewhat sheepishly. âThanks for the help with the house, Brandon.â
Brandon gave a slight nod and reached for the reports.
Aaron gave him another heart to heart warning. âSophia might not even fly out tomorrow. You know itâs quite normal for a couple to argue or fight its not rocket science to win someone back
Brende paused mid-way while grabbing the report, then calmly spread it out in front of him.
Aar dirt cat on to Brandonâs off vibe and kept doling out advice on this and that, finally leaving with a content
Chapter 5
Brandon stared at the report in front of him, fell silent for a bit, then shoved it aside, grabbed another pile of documents, glanced at them, put them down, and emotionlessly shifted his gaze to the window, his fingers gently massaging his forehead
Kent, who had been sneakily watching Brandon, seized the moment to knock and enter, asking, âMr. Crawley, do we need to reschedule tomorrowâs meeting with Mr. Evert?â
Brandon stopped massaging his brow, opened his eyes, his expression as cool and collected as before
âNo need!â he said
