Chapter 8
At the restaurant, Patricia frowned upon seeing Brandonâs response and couldnât help but glance at Ivan and Sophia, obviously skeptical. She shot back a message to Brandon [If heâs your guy, whatâs his name?]
But there was no reply on WhatsApp.
Patriciaâs face started to cloud over as she waited without a response, and she couldnât help but look at Sophia again.
The gal sitting across from her was just as puzzled and looked at Sophia before turning to Patricia. âWhatâs up?â
She didnât know Sophia or recognize her.
Patricia shook her head Itâs nothing.â
But her eyes were still fixed on Sophia, with a touch of petulance and a not-so-quiet voice, not to mention her strong presence. Sophia couldnât help but furrow her brows and instinctively turned around, locking eyes with Patricia.
Patricia was still holding her phone, showing no signs of embarrassment at being caught in the act. She just calmly glanced at Sophia without saying hi
Sophia didnât make a move to say hi either, just calmly returned her gaze after a brief eye contact.
Ivan looked at her thoughtfully. An acquaintance?â
Sophia nodded with a smile. âYeah. She didnât elaborate.
Seeing she wasnât getting a greeting from Sophia, Patriciaâs face sunk, but she was still perched on her elderâs high horse, not quite ready to cross that line. Probably trying to give Sophia a nudge, she picked up her phone again and sent Brandon a voice message. Brandon, donât cover for Sophia all the time. Busy as you are with work, you still gotta keep an eye on your wife. Sophiaâs a married woman, after all. I trust she wouldnât do anything untoward, but it would look bad if acquaintances started gossiping.â
She didnât bother to lower her voice.
Sophia could hear her, but didnât respond, just sipped her tea as if nothing was amiss.
Still no peep from Brandon on WhatsApp.
Patricia, used to carrying her elderâs authority, couldnât stand being ignored by the younger generation and lost her temper. She got up and walked over to Sophia, standing between her and Ivan. She glanced at Ivan as if by accident, then turned to Sophia. âSophia, whoâs this?â
She was polite and composed, so Sophia politely introduced him âThis is my senior.â
Patricia sized up Ivan from her lofty position and reached out to him. âHello, Iâm Sophiaâs mother-in-law.â
Ivan nodded politely. âHelloâ
Patricia didnât get the deference or the panic she expected. She gave Ivan another look, then couldnât help but turn to Sophia. âSophia, youâre a married woman. You should be mindful of how it looks when youâre with other men.â
Then she added with an affable smile. âAlso, if you need money or anything, just talk to the family. Donât always have your folks come over. Doesnât sound good if it gets out.â
Sophia paused with her cup, turned to her. âWhat money?â
Patricia kept up her dignified gentleness. The money for buying the villa. It was our oversight, now that youâve married into our family.â
âSony Sophia stood up, interrupting her. âIâm not aware of this situation. I apologize for any inconvenience caused, and
make sure to return every penny once Iâve sorted it out.â
She nodded apologetically to Patricia, then tumed to Ivan. âIvan, Iâm sorry, but I have some things to take care of and aught have to leave first Make yourself comfortable.â
vgn stood up. âDo you need help with anything?
Boch sled and declined, Ro, thank you, van
Chapter 8
But Ivan had already signaled the waiter. âWhere are you headed? Let me drop you offâ
âReally, no need, but thank you.â Sophia still refused.
Patricia, watching coldly from the sidelines, was visibly upset but tried to keep her temper in check.
Susan, noticing the commotion, hurriedly wrapped up her phone call and came over worriedly. âWhatâs going on?â
âItâs nothing, I just have to run home for a bit.â Sophia looked apologetic at Susan, Susan, I might have to catch up with you next time Iâm in the countryâ
Thatâs fine, you do what you need to Susan pulled her, âWhen Iâm free, Iâll fly over to see youâ
She pointed at her watch. Just keep an eye on the time and donât miss your flight.â
Sophia nodded. âI know.â
Her place was just a few minutes away from the airport by taxi.
When Sophia got home, Aaron and Laura were there, debating over which apartment layout to choose, with most of the plans sprawled across the coffee table.
Seeing Sophia walk in, both were startled, and Laura even looked up at the clock in confusion. âWerenât you supposed to be on a flight this afternoon? Why are you still here?â
Without saying a word, Sophia walked over with an expressionless face, bent down to grab the layout from the table, and ripped it to shreds.
Aaron and Laura were startled by her sudden action and stared at her in shock.
âWhatâs wrong?
Sophia didnât say anything, just calmly tossed the pieces into the trash and reached out to them. âGive it to me!â
Aaron and Laura looked at each other, confused. âGive you what?â
Sophia said, The money!â
Aaron and Laura didnât say anything.
Sophia just looked at them calmly. âWhat did I remind you before? Brandon and I are divorced, and you shouldnât bother them anymore. And what happened? It hasnât been long, and youâve already let my words go in one ear and out the other, havenât you?â
âIt was Brandon who said you werenât divorced.â Aaron quickly explained, coming to his senses, âAnd the money was offered by him, I didnât ask for it.
Sophia said, âIf you donât go to him, how would he just give you money?â
âI did go to him, but I wasnât asking for money. Aaron scratched his head, looking a bit guilty. âAnd itâs not like weâre not giving it back. Just borrowed it for now and will return it when we can.â
âWhat will you return it with?â
Laura was stumped and only after a while timidly said. âIf we really canât pay it back, then we wonât. After all, it was offered by him, and he certainly doesnât lack the money.â
Sophia was incredulous and laughed out of frustration. Just because he doesnât lack the money, you feel entitled to take it?
Laura said, âAfter all the endeavors Iâve put into raising you, he marries you off and youâre fussing over giving us a bit of
âs not quite like that Aaron quickly tried to smooth things over, worried Laura might say something even more sutrageous. âLook, itâs not easy for mom and dad either. They fell head over heels for that house. If we miss this chance, thereâs no other If we can buy it, letâs grab it now We can worry about paying it back laterâ
âSo. are we supposed to foot the bill for everything she takes a shine to? Sophia, keeping het cool, said, âThatâs not our money to cake. Give it back to him right now, and donât make me repeat myself
Chapter 8
Laura said, âGive back what? The down paymentâs already been made.â
Sophia said âThen cancel the house purchaseâ
âNo way, if we cancel, we wonât get the down payment back.â
âThen consider it money spent on a life lesson.â
âHave you lost your marbles? Spending over a ten grand on a lessonâ? If theyâre willing to give it, just take it. Whatâs the use of clinging to pride? Cold, hard cash in hand is what counts. Besides, this barely scratches the surface of compensating you
Sophia didnât want to argue I donât know what counts for you, but I only feel righteous spending the cash Iâve earned myself. I know which card the moneyâs on Either you cough up the card yourselves, or Iâll report it lost. Your move.â
After she started making her own money in college, Sophia thought of regularly sending some to her dad, who wasnât literate enough to handle banking She gave him a card in her name, but Laura, who held the purse strings at home, turned it into a dedicated card for borrowing money from the Crawley family, all under the pretense that Sophia needed
the funds.
When Sophia found out, she paid back the Crawleys with her own money, but because Laura kept promising not to borrow again, the card wasnât immediately canceled. Little did she expect Laura and Aaron to bite off more than they
could chew this time
Lauraâs face turned stormy on the spot. After all weâve done to bring you up, this is how you repay us?â
Sophia ignored her and whipped out her phone to call the bank to report the card lost
Laura pulled the card out of her pocket and slammed it onto the table. âIf you dare cancel this house, donât bother coming back home.â
Sophia glanced at the card on the table, pursed her lips, and reached for it.
âMom, Iâm sorry, Sophia looked up at her. âIâll return the down payment to you, but we canât accept this money.â
Laura turned her face away, cold and silent.
Sophia didnât say more. She grabbed the card and was about to leave when Laura lost her temper. âSophia, if you walk out with that card, donât ever set foot in this house again.â
Sophia paused in her tracks.
Haley, who had rushed back upon hearing the news, looked at her worriedly. âWhatâs wrong?â
Sophia shook her head slightly, her eyes reddening as she looked at Haley.
âDad, please take care of yourself.â
With that, she left without looking back.
On the way back to the airport, Sophia transferred the money back to Brandonâs card intact. After hesitating, she dialed Kent.
âKent, could you please let Mr Crawley know that Iâve transferred the money he sent my brother back to his card? Tell him to check his account.â
Kent, who was in a meeting with Brandon and Mr. Evert, hesitated and glanced at Brandon before responding to Sophia on the phone. âMs Yearwood, I think it would be better for you to tell Mr. Crawley yourself.â
âNo heed, Iâm a bit busy driving right now, Sophia declined. âJust pass my thanks to Mr. Crawley, and let him know that our family wonât be needing that money for now, or in the future If my folks go asking him for money again, tell him not to bother with them.â
âKent chuckled awkwardly, âMr. Crawley is right here. Itâs best if you tell him yourself.â
Without waiting for Sophia to respond, he quickly handed the phone to Brandon. âMr. Crawley, Sophiaâs on the line.
