The old commander-in-chief delighted in the company of the young men, regaling them with tales of his illustrious past until nightfall. He shared anecdotes of his glory days, paintings crafted in his honor, ancient engravings, and rare guns. Autographed letters from esteemed individuals were read aloud. Meanwhile, the weary recruits, yearning for their beds and stifling yawns, listened and observed, their legs numb from a day spent tirelessly honing their swordsmanship since dawn.

"Your Highness, are you paying attention? Can you recall what I just said?" demanded the commander-in-chief.

"My apologies, I didn't catch that. What did I miss?" inquired Cassius.

Sighing, the commander responded, "I mentioned that your footwork technique needs refinement, your highness. It was somewhat sloppy towards the end of the duel."

"Understood. I will make sure to address it. Thank you for your guidance," acknowledged Cassius.

"Very well, gentlemen, let's call it a day. Your majesty also appears fatigued," declared the commander. The young recruits, expressing gratitude through glances, finally made their way to their tents.

On the palace's second floor, a series of five opulent suites formed a straight line, offering an uninterrupted vista when the expansive sliding doors were pushed against the walls. At regular intervals along the suites, there were sharp turns, each unveiling a distinct and captivating sight.

The middle of each suite wall was adorned with tall, narrow Gothic windows that overlooked a closed corridor, following the meandering path of the suites. These windows were made of stained glass, their colors matching the prevailing hues of the chamber they opened into. For instance, the windows in the easternmost chamber were vibrant blue, while the second chamber had yellow ornaments and tapestries, resulting in orange-tinted panes. The third chamber featured a green color scheme, reflected in its casements. The fourth chamber was decorated and illuminated in violet, while the fifth suite was enveloped in black velvet tapestries that cascaded from the ceiling and draped the walls, blending with the matching carpet.

Cassius entered the fifth suite and instructed the servants to prepare a bath for him. Despite the abundance of golden ornaments scattered or suspended from the ceiling, there was no source of light emanating from lamps or candelabras within the chambers. Instead, in the corridors adjacent to the suite, there were sturdy tripods placed opposite each window, holding braziers of fire. The flames emitted a radiant glow through the tinted glass, illuminating the room with a striking intensity.

Next to the suite, a bath was prepared for the prince. As he stepped into the bathing area, his eyes struggled to adjust to the darkness surrounding him. Apart from a single candelabrum placed near his neatly folded silk robe and towel, there was no other light source in the vicinity. The young prince could perceive the delicate scents of roses, lilac, and the fresh leaves of the poplar.

Undressing, he immersed himself in the lukewarm water infused with rose petals, enjoying the aromatic experience. The bathwater was delicately fragranced with the finest sandalwood and lavender essential oils. As he cleansed his skin, he washed away the accumulated dirt and grime.

"Your Majesty?" Upon hearing the voice, he froze, flooded with memories of their kiss. Eryx's lean yet masculine arms, soft and fragrant, encircled his neck. Cheek to cheek, they shared an intimate moment, accompanied by the sound of a tender kiss. The initiative taken by Eryx caught him off guard, but he couldn't help but be amazed by his partner's ability to surprise him.

He recollected how his heart raced and his hands trembled visibly after the kiss. The touch of Eryx's arms around his neck left a lingering sensation as if his skin had been anointed with oil. A faint, cool tingle remained on his left cheek, where he had felt the warmth of Eryx's cheek against his stubble, reminiscent of the refreshing sensation of peppermint drops. The more he rubbed the spot, the more pronounced the coolness became. From head to toe, he experienced an unfamiliar and powerful sensation that continued to intensify. It was a euphoric feeling, unlike anything he had ever known.

"Your Majesty?"

"Eryx?"

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"Come closer."

Eryx used his voice as a guide in finding him. It was so dark, and the lone candelabra's luminescence didn't help much either.

"I've got your clothes, Your Majesty."

"Mhmm, then bring them to me."

In the darkness enveloping them, Cassius's senses were impaired, hindering his vision and creating an air of mystery. As he searched for Eryx, his movements led to an unexpected collision, causing Eryx to stumble backward. Cassius instinctively reached out, attempting to assist him, but the slippery ground sent both of them tumbling onto the unyielding floor.

Within this intimate proximity, Cassius's lips grazed the bottom left side of Eryx's neck, while his hand firmly encircled Eryx's waist, their chests pressed together. Their closeness elicited sharp intakes of breath, as their scattered clothing served as a reminder of their vulnerable state.

Concern laced Cassius's voice as he inquired, "Eryx, are you hurt?"

"No, Your Majesty, I'm fine. I hope you're not injured," Eryx responded.

"Now that I have you here, there's something I wanted to discuss. But first, let me adjust the candelabra, so I can behold you clearly," Cassius expressed.

As a ray of light fell upon Eryx's face, he blushed, his eyes meeting Cassius's. Attempting to free himself from the discomfort, Eryx squirmed while Cassius gradually sat up. "What did you wish to discuss, Your Majesty?" Eryx inquired, his voice filled with shyness.

Cassius drew a deep breath, his eyes reflecting empathy and comprehension. "I understand the struggles you face, and I am here for you," he uttered gently, his voice a soothing murmur. "However, for us to navigate this, we must be honest with one another. Can you share what weighs on your mind?"

Nervously, Eryx's gaze wandered, avoiding direct eye contact with Cassius. Guilt and shame coursed through his heart, acknowledging his forbidden desire for the prince. "I'm sorry," he whispered, barely audible. "I know it's wrong, but I cannot control my emotions."

Leaning closer, Cassius's hand gently rested upon Eryx's shoulder, its warmth seeping into his very being, igniting a symphony of tantalizing sensations. Eryx fought to steady his trembling composure as Cassius revealed his own inner struggles. "I comprehend," Cassius confessed, his voice a tender caress that embraced vulnerability. "Believe me, I, too, have wrestled with these forbidden sentiments."

Surprised and moved by the revelation, Eryx met Cassius's gaze, his eyes flickering with a mesmerizing blend of astonishment and unspoken longing. "You?" he stammered, his voice trembling with a raw vulnerability that mirrored their shared unspoken truth.

Cassius nodded, his eyes locked with Eryx's. "Yes, I have," he said, his voice filled with raw honesty. "And I want you to know that what we have is not just lust, as you suggested. It's something deeper, something real."

Eryx's cheeks flushed with color as Cassius's words sank in. He had always felt that there was something more between them, something that went beyond mere physical attraction. But he had never dared to voice his feelings out loud, for fear of being ridiculed or rejected.

"But what about your duties as a prince?" Eryx asked hesitantly. "And the Windsor dynasty?"

Cassius shook his head, his eyes never leaving Eryx's. "None of that matters to me," he said firmly. "What matters is you, and the way you make me feel."

Eryx's eyes widened with disbelief. He had never imagined that someone as high-born and powerful as Cassius could care for him in such a way. "But...but we can't be together. It's not right. Society won't accept it."

Cassius took a deep breath, his eyes filled with fierce determination. "I know," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "But I don't care about society's expectations. All I care about is us, and our happiness."

Eryx stared at him, searching his face for any signs of doubt or hesitation. But Cassius's expression was resolute, and it gave him hope.

"Okay," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "I believe you. And I feel the same way. I want to be with you, no matter what."

Cassius smiled, his heart filling with warmth. "I'm glad to hear that," he said, his voice filled with tenderness. He leaned in to brush his lips against Eryx's, the softness of their kiss filled with unspoken emotion. It was as if they were pouring all of their longing and desire into this one fleeting moment, knowing that they might never have another chance.

As they broke apart, gasping for breath, Cassius took Eryx's hand in his. "I know it won't be easy," he said, his voice filled with a sense of foreboding. "But we'll face the world together, and we'll make it work. Because love is worth fighting for."

Eryx looked at him, his eyes shining with a mixture of hope and fear. He knew that their journey would not be easy and that they would face countless obstacles and challenges along the way. But at least they would be facing it together.
