The atmosphere in the queen's chambers was heavy with tension and apprehension. Cassius cautiously entered the room, his steps almost muted on the lush carpet that adorned the floor. His gaze swept across the surroundings, taking in the opulence of the chamber. Intricate tapestries depicting scenes of grandeur adorned the walls, their vibrant colors reflecting the empire's wealth and power. Yet, in Cassius's foul mood, even the richness of the room seemed to lose its luster, the once vibrant hues dulled by his inner turmoil.
Sunlight filtered through the grand windows, casting a warm glow upon the room. Soft draperies billowed gently in the breeze, their ethereal dance a stark contrast to the heaviness in Cassius's heart. The scent of fresh flowers permeated the air, mingling with the faint hint of incense, creating an intoxicating fragrance that usually uplifted his spirits. But today, it only served as a reminder of the weighty decisions that hung in the air.
Cassius approached his mother's bedside, the ornate bedstead an emblem of her regal stature. He sank into the plush chair beside her, its velvet upholstery a soothing touch against his troubled mind. Grasping his mother's hand, he felt the coolness of her skin, a stark contrast to the warmth of his own. The touch offered a semblance of comfort, a reminder of the deep bond they shared, even in the midst of their differences.
Tears welled up in Cassius's eyes, blurring his vision as a single droplet cascaded down his cheek. It fell upon his mother's delicate features, glistening like a tiny jewel before merging with her porcelain skin. The tear symbolized the anguish he carried within, a testament to the profound love he harbored for Eryx and the pain of the choices he had to make.
The queen stirred from her slumber, her movements delicate and graceful. Cassius hastily wiped away his tears, determined to maintain an air of composure. As her eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the gentle illumination, a fleeting expression of disgust marred her features upon seeing her son.
"Mother, I-"
"You don't have the right to speak right now. Just listen to me and follow my instructions," the queen interrupted sternly.
Cassius braced himself for what was to come.
"I will be sending that worker back to Cascadia, along with a few gifts for their queen, to maintain our alliance. And within the next week, you will be betrothed to Lady Hawthorne."
Cassius flinched and abruptly rose from his chair. "No, I cannot agree to this. Is this the price demanded for silence?"
"Yes, it is. And it is the best decision to make. If news of your relationship were to become public, your reputation would be irreparably damaged. The worker would face even worse consequences. To ensure his safety, this is the only viable course of action."
The queen's gaze remained fixed on Cassius, her expression resolute and unreadable. Cassius took a deep breath, his heart heavy with emotion.
"Mother, I know this may be difficult for you to accept, but I love him," Cassius said, his voice quivering with emotion. "I understand it contradicts everything we have been taught, and he is not of noble birth. But I cannot deny my feelings. I cannot control who I fall in love with."
The queen's gaze softened slightly, and she let out a sigh. "Cassius, I acknowledge the depth of your feelings for this worker. However, you must also grasp the weight of your position as a prince of this empire. Your actions reflect not only upon yourself but also upon our family and our people. You are not free to love whomever you choose."
"Why not, Mother?" Cassius felt a lump form in his throat, anticipating her response. "Are you saying I cannot be with him?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
The queen remained silent for a moment, carefully considering his words. "Cassius, you must comprehend that the world we inhabit is often cruel and intolerant towards those who are different. You and this worker will face numerous challenges if you decide to pursue this relationship."
"I am aware of that, Mother, but I cannot simply abandon him," Cassius declared resolutely. "I understand that it will not be easy, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to be with him."
The queen's gaze softened further, and she reached out to place a hand on Cassius's arm. "My son, I see the sincerity in your feelings. As your mother, my utmost desire is for your happiness. Yet, I cannot condone this relationship. It contradicts everything we stand for." Cassius bowed his head, burdened by the weight of his mother's words. "I understand, Mother. But I cannot simply erase what I feel. I will do whatever it takes to continue to be with him, even if it means leaving the empire."
With that, Cassius stood up and abruptly left the room, closing the door with a resounding slam. Anger and frustration swelled within him, but he resisted the urge to unleash his emotions on his mother. Despite her decision, she was still his mother, and he couldn't bear the thought of causing her further distress while she was in such a fragile state. He yearned for her to find tranquility, just as the doctor had advised.
Feeling helpless and overwhelmed, Cassius allowed his feet to carry him to the one place he knew he would find solace. He let out a heavy sigh and lightly knocked on the door. Without hesitation, the door swung open.
"Your Highness, what is the matter?" Eryx began, but Cassius didn't let him finish. He swiftly entered the room and locked the door behind him, his eyes fixed on Eryx.
Without a moment's hesitation, Cassius enveloped Eryx in a tight embrace, seeking comfort and refuge in his presence.
"Your Highness, what's wrong?" Eryx inquired, concern etched on his face.
"Eryx, if it's not too much to ask, may I please kiss you right now? Please?" Cassius pleaded, his voice laced with a mixture of desperation and longing.
Eryx's eyes widened with surprise, but he quickly composed himself. "Of course, Your Highness. You may," he responded, giving his consent.
At that moment, as their lips met, Cassius allowed himself to momentarily forget the challenges and restrictions that surrounded them. The touch of Eryx's lips against his own brought a glimmer of hope, a fleeting taste of the love he so desperately craved.
Cassius wasted no time; he immediately wrapped his hands around him and pressed his lips against his soft, almost silken, and pillowy lips. He could feel the soft tickle of his breath beneath his nose, fingers carding through his hair as they breathed each other in.
Their bodies were pressed together heatedly against the wall, breathing heavily as their lips pressed together and their tongues touched. Cassius could taste their shared breath and feel the thud of their combined heartbeat as he fumbled to open the buttons of the young boy's shirt.
Annoyed with his trembling hands, Cassius ripped his shirt open and discarded the loose piece of fabric. Eryx was astonished by his behavior and the urgency that Cassius felt coursing toward him as he touched him. He knew something was off but felt it was unwise to comment on it. He felt Cassius's hands below his thighs as he picked him up in a swift, graceful motion and placed him on the bed.
Before joining him, Cassius discarded his shirt as well, and his toned chest came into view, which left Eryx in a dazed state. He wanted to touch every ripple of his muscle, every curve, and every part of his skin.
Cassius lunged forward and hastily grabbed the younger boy's face in his hands. The force of their collision lips on lips, tongue against tongue-was bruising, enough to knock the breath out of Eryx the second they connected.
Blood pounded in Cassius's ears as a shiver ran down his spine, so powerful that he thought he might collapse into the mud at his feet.
Cassius focused completely on Eryx's touch; his fingertips softly brushing against the back of his neck, sighs and moans passed between their meeting lips as they moved slowly yet passionately against each other. It was intense, so intense that they lost their sanity as their tongues kept touching each other.
When Eryx pulled back for a second to catch his breath, Cassius immediately groped his waist and pulled him forward as his lips met with his, quickly closing the distance that was created between them. He pulled him tighter against him as his hand traveled toward his smooth chest. He couldn't stop. He needed this. He needed it too much.
He began to pepper Eryx's face with quick pecks. He kissed his forehead, both of his eyes, the tip of his nose, and then his lips.
Cassius let go of his face, and his attention was now entirely on the younger boy's smooth chest. He trailed a line of kisses from the top of his neck to his belly button and then halted. He removed his tongue, and it swirled at the tiny gap, teasing him while his hands began touching other portions of his chest.
After a while, Cassius and the young boy, their bodies intertwined, began to drift apart. Cassius's breath caught in his throat as if he were trying to fill his lungs with the much-needed air that eluded him. Sensing the impending danger of succumbing to his desires entirely, he mustered the strength to speak, his voice laced with a mixture of resignation and restraint.
"We should stop here before I lose complete control and do something I'll deeply regret later," Cassius uttered, his words carrying the weight of his inner turmoil.
The young boy, a mixture of concern and desperation etched on his face, pleaded with Cassius. "Okay, but please don't just leave. Let's talk first. Did something happen?"
Cassius mustered a gentle smile, his lips softly pressing against the boy's right cheek, a bittersweet gesture filled with tenderness. "You worry too much. Rest now, and I'll remain by your side for a while longer. Then, we can talk, alright?"
The boy nodded, his trust evident in the subtle movement of his head.
Cassius pulled him closer, his arm encircling the boy's waist, their bodies still connected in an intimate embrace. With his other hand, he tenderly stroked the boy's hair, guiding him into the realm of peaceful slumber. Each stroke of his hand carried a silent message of affection, an unspoken promise of care and protection.
Once Cassius was certain the boy had surrendered to sleep's embrace, he carefully extricated himself from their entwined state. His hand lingered on the boy's face for a brief moment, his touch gentle and lingering, as if etching the memory of their connection into his very being.
"Goodbye, my love. Take care of yourself," Cassius whispered softly, his voice infused with a mixture of sorrow and longing. It was a farewell, an acknowledgment of the impossible circumstances that bound them and the sacrifices that lay ahead. With a heavy heart, Cassius turned away, leaving the room with measured steps, carrying the weight of their forbidden love and the ache of their separation.
