EVAN
âI donât think sheâs ready,â I insisted, smoothing out a wrinkle in my pants.
âSheâs almost twenty-five,â Chris said.
âWith the maturity level of a sixteen-year-old,â I grumbled.
âSheâs not that bad,â Garrett chuckled.
âSays you. You should hear how she talks to me.â
âSheâll settle down once youââ
âWhoa!â Chris yelled, raising his hand. âDad in the room.â
âYou gave us your blessing, Chris,â Jake reminded him.
âThat doesnât mean I want to think about ~that~ part of the arrangement.â
âFair enough,â Garrett said.
âWhat makes you think sheâs going to agree to this, Chris?â I asked. âSheâd rather âhang outâ with guys her own age. The shadier the better.â
âThatâs part of the reason I came up with the trip idea,â he explained. âShe needs time away from her life in Miami to gain some perspective.
âA month on the road with three mature guys who know how to treat a woman will open her eyes. Sheâll realize she doesnât have to settle for losers who beat her up and get her thrown in jail.â
âJail?â Jake gasped. âHow the fuck did that happen?â
âShe was getting high with her loser boyfriend when the cops busted down the door,â I explained.
âThey cuffed her and took her down to county. But I guess the boyfriend told them she was innocent. I canât imagine why he would do that after he beat her up.â
âMaybe he figured she wouldnât press charges if he got her out of trouble,â Jake suggested.
âPerhaps.â
âI still think she should charge him. Thatâs a nasty shiner.â
âWhat?â Garrett barked. âHe gave her a black eye?â
âYup. And kicked her in the back.â
âWhat?!â Chris bellowed. âI didnât know that. Did you know, Evan?â
âAre you kidding?â I snorted. âShe doesnât share things with me. Thatâs Jakeâs department.
âSheâs been following him around with her tongue hanging out since she was a teenager. Heâll have no trouble convincing her to âhang outâ with him.â
âStop using that phrase, Evan,â Chris requested.
âWould you prefer he said âfuckâ?â Jake asked. âCause we all know thatâs whatâs gonna happen if she agrees to be our woman, that is. Iâm not so sure she will. Vada is pretty independent.â
âJake!â Chris cried. âIâm begging you. Please stop talking about having sex with my daughter.â
âI think we all need to calm down,â Garrett suggested.
âVada needs to go to the hospital,â Chris said. âHow hard did he kick her?â
âSheâs got a big bruise,â Jake shared. âShe showed me.â
Chris picked up the phone. His deep voice roared through the PA system in the shop. âVada, get your ass in here!â
Vada appeared a few minutes later, wearing shop coveralls. âLetâs hear it,â she demanded.
âYouâve got grease on your nose,â I said, grabbing a tissue.
âI can do it myself,â she hissed, her gorgeous green eyes flashing with anger when I tried to rub it away. âDonât touch me.â
~Yeah. Sheâs not gonna sleep with you, jackass. When she finds out itâs a package deal, sheâll bolt.~
Vada was beautiful. There was no doubt about that. She inherited her rich, raven hair from her mother. And those eyes. Sea green and full of spunk.
Her lips were full and luscious, with perfect white teeth sparkling behind them.
And I didnât stand a chance with her. Jake and Garrett were going to miss out on having her as their wife because I was an asshole.
âVada, youâre going to the hospital,â Chris announced.
âWhat? Why?â
âBecause youâre hurt, honey.â
âIâm fine, Dad.â
âDid that piece of shit kick you in the back?â
She turned her icy glare on Jake. âReally?â she snarled. âI thought I could trust you.â
âIâm worried about you, Vada,â Jake said. âA kick in the back can be a serious injury. You need to get checked out.â
She studied him for a moment, her tongue darting out to moisten those delicious lips. Vada had a mouth made forâ
~Nope. Not gonna think that way in front of her father. Itâs disrespectful. Even though he ~did ~ask his business partners and best friends to have a foursome with his daughter.~
~Well, technically he asked us to marry her. But he knew what marrying three men would involve.~
âFine,â she relented. âIâll go to the hospital. But only if Jake takes me.â
âIâd like all three of you to accompany Vada to the ER,â Chris said.
âWhy?â she sighed. âIâm not a child. And why arenât you coming, Dad?â
âI have an appointment.â
âWhere?â
âItâs personal.â
âWhatever,â she muttered. âWhat about our meeting?â
âWeâll do it tomorrow.â
âCâmon, Dad,â she whined. âI wanna know now.â
âGo to the hospital, Vada. Please?â
âFine.â
We took my car. Vada sat in the back with Jake and made fun of my Audi. She called it the âold-dude-mobile.â
And she flirted with him nonstop. He mightâve physically resembled the type of guy she went out with, but he wasnât a ~bad boy.~
Jake Edwards was a kind-hearted guy who loved to bake and sing in the shower. He had an awesome voice. He was always a hit at karaoke night. And he loved cats.
I fucking hate cats. But when you live with someone, you have to compromise.
Fortunately, our house was massive. The cats had their own room. But they wouldnât stay in there! They were always rubbing against my ankles. All ~four~ of them!
Iâd never admit this out loud. My ego wouldnât allow that. But I was jealous of Jake. He was the whole package. Jake was a top-notch mechanic. I didnât know shit about fixing cars.
He was smart. Not as smart as me, of course. But he was well-educated and intelligent. And the guy was extremely good-looking. If I was into dudes, Iâd definitely be attracted to him.
His wavy black hair and full beard drew the ladies to him like bees to nectar whenever we went out clubbing.
Jake and Vadaâs baby would be gorgeous, with their black hair and dreamy eyes.
Yep. Babies were part of this deal. Chris wanted grandkids to carry on the business. One from each of us.
âIâll drop you and Jake off at the door,â I said when we reached the entrance to South Miami Hospital.
âI hope sheâs okay,â Garrett said while I circled around the parking garage searching for a spot.
âSheâll be fine,â I muttered absently, swinging into a sweet spot right by the stairs. âVada is a tough cookie.â
âWhat do you think sheâs gonna say?â he chuckled.
Garrett was always laughing. It took a lot to ruffle his feathers. But I knew he was fretting about the proposition.
Chris first came to us with his idea several months before. He knew we were looking for a woman to be our wife.
It was a pretty daunting task to find a woman we all liked, not to mention one that was willing to be shared by three men. He knew we had a soft spot for Vada.
But it took a while to come to an agreement. What Chris was asking bordered on creepy.
What would people say?
We helped raise her after her mother died. She was eighteen years younger than us.
âIâm not sure, Garrett,â I replied. âSheâs unpredictable.â
âChris will be crushed if she says no.â
âOh, sheâll definitely say no,â I said. âAnd Chris knows it. Thatâs what the trip is for. Itâs our chance to change her mind.â
âThatâs not really what this trip is about, Evan.â
âLetâs not go there right now.â
âAgreed.â
***
âI canât believe she told them Jake was her dad,â I grumbled, shaking my head.
âShe wanted him in the room with her,â Garrett said.
âYeah, but her ~dad~? She couldnât have said ~brother~?â
âI donât know what to tell you, Evan.â
âI donât like favoritism. If we do this, weâre all with her. Not just Jake.â
âRelax, Evan,â he said. âYouâll get your chance. But itâs going to be a big adjustment for all of us. You have to be patient.â
I glanced around the crowded waiting room. Why were there so many kids? And why did they all have snotty noses? I shivered when I saw one coming toward me.
âNo, Joey!â the mother called, snatching the little booger monster before he could touch me.
Kids scared the shit out of me. Maybe it would be different when it was my own kid. But it wouldnât be just my kid in the house. There would be two other ones that didnât belong to me.
What if they wiped snot all over my stuff?
Or puked on the furniture?
Drew on the walls?
Tracked mud through the house?
~Fucking hell.~
âWhatâs your problem?â Garrett asked.
âNothing. Why do you ask?â
âYouâre looking a bit pasty,â he chuckled.
âIâm fine.â
After a long two hours, Jake came out to the waiting room and flopped down in the chair next to us.
âHowâs Vada?â I inquired.
âSheâs fine. The doctor said sheâs lucky. That asshole just missed her kidney.â
âFuck,â I muttered. âShe couldâve been killed. What if the cops hadnât arrived when they did?â
âLetâs just be thankful they did,â Garrett said.
âWhen can we get out of here?â I asked.
âTheyâre just finishing up her discharge papers.â
I yawned and glanced at my watch. âI donât want to take her all the way back to her condo tonight. Weâre ten minutes from home.â
âDo you want me to invite her for a sleepover?â Jake asked.
âYou better ask Chris.â
âSheâs a grown woman, Evan.â
âJust text him.â
âHere she comes,â Garrett announced.
âChris agreed,â Jake said, holding up his phone.
âAgreed to what?â Vada snapped.
âTo you spending the night at our place,â Garrett informed her.
âWhy?â
âBecause itâs the middle of the fucking night,â I grumbled. âAnd our house is ten minutes away.â
âWhatever,â she muttered. âLetâs get the hell out here. I hate hospitals. This was a giant waste of time. I told you guys I was fine.â
âYou heard what the doctor said,â Jake reminded her. âYou couldâve had a kidney injury from that kick.â
âI wouldâve been in pain.â
âYou are in pain, sweetheart,â he said gently. âWhy didnât you tell anyone?â
âBecause Iâm not a pussy.â
âAdmitting youâre hurt doesnât make you a pussy.â
âCan we go?â she asked impatiently. âThey forced me to take some pain medication, and I just wanna crawl in bed and sleep for an entire day.â

I put the car in park and glanced in the rearview mirror when I hit the remote to close the garage door. Vada was out cold, her head resting on Jakeâs shoulder.
âSheâs an angel when sheâs sleeping,â Garrett observed.
âYeah, sure,â I muttered. âAn angel who turns into the devil the second her eyes open.â
âSheâs not the devil, Evan,â Jake sighed as he climbed out of the car and walked around to Vadaâs door.
âSheâs gonna be a handful,â I warned. âUnless she does some serious maturing on the trip.â
I watched Jake lift her out of the backseat, cradling her in his arms before he headed for the door.
âSheâs not sleeping in your bed,â I said.
âRelax, Evan,â he sighed. âSheâs sleeping in the guest room.â
âDamn right she is.â
âGuys, letâs not fight,â Garrett suggested. âThere will be plenty of opportunities for each of us to have alone time with her when she moves in.â
âDream on,â I mumbled. âSheâs not gonna agree to marry us.â
âTry to think positive, Evan,â he said, slapping me on the back as we followed Jake inside the house.
âI am,â I said. âIâm ~positive~ sheâs going to laugh in our faces.â
