"We're innocent!"
I cringed at the voice and I couldn't even see him yet. We had just walked into the police station, ready to demand to know what happened to Kyle, when Paul shouted that out from inside a closed room. Innocent. Yeah, right. He stole my child from me. That wasn't innocent. That wasn't anywhere close to being innocent.
I grabbed hold of Jackson's hand tightly. We had convinced Leo to stay with Kyle. He was too angry right now, and coming here probably wouldn't make it any better. And at least this way, one of us was there in case Kyle woke up. I didn't exactly want to come here, because of the risk of seeing Paul and Teresa - I had way too many resentments towards them - but I opted to come so that Logan could have some time without being afraid of me.
We were headed towards the office that belonged to the Chief, ready to confront him for answers, when a door on my right was suddenly pulled open. The Chief stepped out with a heavy sigh, and I could hear Paul saying something from in the room, although I wasn't focusing on the words.
He seemed shocked to see Jay and me standing here. Shutting the door, he quickly ushered us into his office. "Why the glum faces boys?" he asked, sinking down into the chair behind his desk. "How's the family doing being back together? Kyle's doing fine, right?"
"Everything would be all fine and dandy if Kyle wasn't lying unconscious in a hospital bed right now," Jackson said before I could say anything. "What happened there?"
"Oh boy," the Chief sighed. "Have a seat. I'll explain."
He told us about getting to the house, how Kyle had gone around the back to avoid tipping Paul off about why the cops had shown up. He told us about entering the house and asking about Logan, going about it like a routine door-to-door search for any sightings. Paul tried to play it off like he didn't know anything, but he kept glancing behind him. They heard a door in the back of the house open, and that's when Kyle entered the house. That's when Paul lunged for the closet, pulling a frightened Logan out and holding him like a hostage. I clutched Jackson's hand so tightly at this part of the story, but I don't think he minded the pain when he was just as angry. They were quickly able to defuse the situation and cuff Paul before going into the other room. Paul started struggling, almost getting free, but was stopped. But while all the attention was on Paul and Kyle was trying to get Logan away from the situation, Teresa grabbed a vase and hit Kyle in the back of the head before anyone had time to react. They immediately got him and Logan to the hospital, but needed all hands on deck back here to deal with Paul and Teresa, who were proving to be more trouble than they seemed.
"We've managed to pin assaulting an officer on Teresa, but neither of them will confess to kidnapping," the Chief ended with. "They both see what they did as just, while denying that they even took your son."
"Let me talk to Paul," I said without thinking. Both the Chief and Jackson looked at me. "I'll get him to confess to it, I'm sure. I also have a few things I want to say to him."
None of us spoke for a few seconds while the Chief thought it over. Jay was eyeing me, as if to ask if I actually wanted to do this. I did. I knew I could get him to admit to taking my son away from me. Jackson probably had a colorful array of words to say to Paul, too, but that also probably included an aspect of violence that didn't need to be added, no matter how much he deserved to be hit.
Finally, after a long while, the Chief agreed. "I'll have the camera rolling the whole time. You've got five minutes to get him to admit to the kidnapping, or I'll take you out of there, got it?"
I smiled, glad to be allow to do this. "Understood. Thank you, sir."
It wasn't until a few minutes later that I was walking into the small room Paul was in. He didn't look up from his clasped hands until I sat down across the table from him.
"Not expecting you, dear brother." His face was emotionless. Cold.
I mirrored his look. "I'm not your brother."
He smirked, although it was still icy. "No, I suppose you haven't been for some time now. Not since you stole my son from me."
I resisted the urge to raise my voice. "I believe you have your facts wrong. You stole my son."
"Did you know that I had a son?" Paul asked, avoiding my accusation. His face softened, like he was thinking of the past, of happier memories. "His name was Troy. I was so devastated after God took my little boy away. He would have been four this year. But no, God had to take him from me, and I was so mad, so, so mad. For two years. But then, God must have realized his mistake, must have realized that I should have a son in my life. Six months ago He brought me straight into the path of Alyssa and her two children - my children. God had given me a daughter as well. I recognized Alyssa immediately, remembering, of course, that night. And there was no mistaking that her son was mine. He looks just like my little Troy, so much. I knew, then, exactly what God wanted. For the next four months, I found out everything I could about your so-called family. I was horrified to find out how my children were being raised, and by my own long-lost brother, no less! God wanted my life to be complete again, but sometimes, only sometimes, do I question His actions, although I've never doubted God."
I wasn't sure if I should point out that I was pretty sure being angry at God's decision to take away his son was doubt of his actions. I needed him to actually admit to taking Logan, and I was running out of time.
"Do you realize that you have absolutely no legal control over my children, who are both Logan and Ashley?" He didn't say anything, so I went on. "Alyssa did not know who you were when she got pregnant. She couldn't even remember what you looked like. So she offered her unborn children to us, because she didn't want children and it would have been the only way we could ever have our own. My other sister is a lawyer. She wrote up everything legally and officially. As the biological mother, Alyssa signed over all of her rights, as well as yours. You kidnapped my son and it's now become a legal issue."
Paul slammed his hands, which were connected by handcuffs, down onto the table. "He's my flesh and blood!"
This was getting very irritating, very quickly. I wanted to just slap all the nonsense out of his head. "Then he's also my flesh and blood. Or did you forget that we are actually related, as unfortunate as it may be?"
Something flashed in his eyes. "Maybe if you had stayed with our family, you wouldn't be the disgusting faggot that you are. How could you live with yourself, just knowing how disgusting it is that you're with three other men? And trying to raise children, too? I should have taken both of them. I should have planned better. If only I had more time. But you invited me to their birthday party, and that slut figured out who I was. I needed to do it then, too bad I could only grab the one. He was sleeping. He was easy to sneak out of the house. So yeah, I took Logan, but I had my reasons for that."
I stood up, knowing that I had gotten him to admit to taking Logan away from us. "Your opinion of me means nothing," I told him. "You are just a worthless piece of shit. I am so grateful that someone in that idiotic family of yours had the decency to leave me alone in some restaurant when they did. At least I'm not going to jail, and I have a family that loves me, my husbands, and our children with all of their hearts. What do you have? Parents and a wife that will lie to strangers so that you can carry out some scheme of kidnapping an innocent child? Definitely don't want that life."
Without waiting for him to respond, I left the room and went straight for Jackson's waiting arms. He hugged me back, leaning over to whisper in my ear, "Good job." I smiled slightly. "I would have hit him."
I chuckled, backing out of his embrace. "I know. Even I wanted to."
After a moment, the Chief came over and thanked me. Apparently I had gotten more information out of Paul than he had been able to get, plus his confession. All he had to do now was get Paul to sign an official confession so that they could bypass going to court, but he said that would be easy now that they have video evidence of him confessing. No jury would overlook that.
So Jackson and I left. We got the story of what happened to Kyle and I said what I needed to get off my chest to Paul, which was an unexpected bonus. He was going to go to jail, and even if he spent the rest of his life there, it wouldn't nearly be long enough for how much pain he caused us.
Later that afternoon, I had gone out to pick Ashley up from school. The whole way home, I didn't mention anything about Logan or Kyle, hoping to surprise her with her brother's presence before telling her about her father. When we walked in, Logan was sitting at the table eating a brownie the size of his face - which he probably convinced Leo to buy him on the way home considering we didn't have any before.
Ashley didn't notice him at first, her attention focused on dragging her backpack across the floor. But then Logan dropped the brownie onto the plate in front of him, making Ash's head snap up to him. Suddenly, she dropped her backpack and practically crawled into Logan's lap to give him a tight hug.
I really wish I had thought to pull out my camera to record the reunion of the siblings, or that the moment lasted longer than half a second so I could take a picture. I wanted Kyle to have been here too, but I guess we can't have everything be perfect right now.
Logan still wasn't really looking at me, which broke my heart, but I didn't try and force him. He would come around in his own time, I just needed to believe that.
It wasn't until much later that he finally did. We were all already in bed, but I hadn't fallen asleep yet, although I was almost there. I fully woke up to the sound of our bedroom door creaking open and watched as a Logan-shaped form approached my side of the bed.
"Daddy?" he whispered.
I rolled onto my elbow so that I was looking right at him. "You okay, buddy?"
He shook his head, clutching his Simba doll to his chest. "Can I sleep with you tonight? I had a bad dream."
Smiling, I lifted up the covers, inviting him to climb into the bed next to me. As soon as he did, we both laid down, with him curled into my chest. I gently pressed my lips to his forehead as I breathed in his scent. I had my son in my arms again, after so long.
"I love you, Daddy," he muttered just before his breathing slowed and he was fast asleep.
I love you, too, Logan. I love you, too.
A/N: I didn't mean to write this whole chapter in Josh's point of view, it sort of just happened. But I think I like it. I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter. Please vote and comment :)
