âMister Gills, isnât that a bit too much? Iâm not going to say anything, and Iâll remove myself from this project altogether,â Chloe protested.
Telford smirked. âThis is your punishment. You can just quit if you donât want to do it.â
Anger flared up in Chloeâs chest. She had done nothing wrong. Why was she being treated like this?
âKeep in mind that once you quit, you can forget about rejoining the industry in Seechertown, or anywhere in Kardon
Province.â
âSir, Iâve promised not to say a word. What more do you want?
âThatâs not f*cking enough!â Telford shouted. âYou wouldnât even be alive right now if I hadnât spoken up for you!â
Chloe exploded at last, all her indignance and fury spilling out.
She slammed her permit onto the table, shouting, âI quit, then! So what if Iâll be blacklisted in the industry, Iâm more than fine working as a pizza delivery driver! Iâll survive anyway!!
She stormed out of Telfordâs office with tears in her eyes, driving home right after.
Telfordâs expression was ashen. âThe f*cking nerve of this girl. Iâll see how long that lasts! Youâll come crying to me one day!â
A while later, he called for his secretary.
âGet Mariah in here.â
âYes, Mister Gills.â
âAlso, mention in Chlorâs resignation papers that she was fired due to severe misconduct.â
âGot it, Mister Gills.
The secretary left, and Telford smirked to himself.
He knew that Chloe loved journalism and would never let it go.
But with such a remark on her record and Telfordâs connections, it was pretty much impossible for her to work in journalism
at all anymore.
She would eventually have no choice but to beg him for help, and he was going to teach her a good lesson on just what it took to do the job.
Not long after, a curvy middleâaged lady walked into the office. She leaned over the table and asked in a husky voice, âMister Gills, whatâs the matter?â
Telford looked down at the two mounds squished against his desk and let out a chuckle. âThereâs a news report that youâve been a**igned to follow up on. Itâs about the Seechertown freeway Incident. All the materialâs here. You just have to get it out in time by tonight.â
âHow do you want it?â
âMake the girl look good and keep the buzz surrounding the situation.â
âGot it, sir. You havenât given me an a**ignment in ages. Have you forgotten about me?â
âOf course not! There just hasnât been much news lately, as you know.â
âWhat about my promotion to a**istant station director, Mister Gills? You promised me that half a year ago.
âIâll make sure you get that promotion the second this is done. Youâll get it for sure.â
âThank you, Mister Gills. Say, that old geezer of mine is out on a business trip tonight. Wanna come over for a drink?
âSure. Iâll be there, you little fox.â Telford reached around his desk, grabbing a handful
2/2
Mariah let out a highâpitched whine. Telford said, âNow get to work 1 need that report by tonight.â
âYou got it, Mister Gills.â
Mariah swayed out of Telfordâs office on her heels, her expression darkening the second her back was turned, âF*cking pervert. I know you were trying to get with Chloe but werenât able to. Iâd never touch you with a tenâfoot pole if it wasnât for my promotion. Urgh.â
At night, over in Wilburâs room on Sealake Island
Wilbur, Faye, Faron, and Elsa sat on the couch, all of them solemn.
Faye said, âThereâs something terribly off about this. The Seechertown Television Broadcast Stationâs report is completely one -sided. Itâs blatantly unfair.â
âUnfair? This is a straightâup attack on Cape, dude,â Faron said.
Wilbur frowned. âIâm pretty sure Sherry Divos isnât powerful enough to pull off something like this.â
âOf course not. Someoneâs behind this for sure,â Faye said.
Wilbur asked, âWho would that be?â
