Mmabatho couldn't stop staring at her phone screen. R950,000. The number looked so wild that she kept checking to make sure it wasn't a glitch. She took a deep breath, feeling a rush of excitement and relief. Finally, she could move into that cozy one-bedroom, one-bath apartment she'd found on Property24 — a little corner of peace that was all hers.

"Okay, time to break the news," she whispered to herself, pacing the living room. She pulled out her phone and dialed Sandile. "Hey, can you and Khanyiswa come to the living room? Need to chat real quick."

A few minutes later, Sandile walked in, eyebrows raised, and Khanyiswa followed, sipping on her iced coffee like she was watching reality TV. "What's up?" Sandile asked, leaning against the arm of the couch.

Mmabatho's heart raced. "So... I wanted to tell you both that I found an apartment. I'm paying for it today," she said, her voice steady but buzzing with excitement.

Khanyiswa's face lit up. "Oh my gosh, that's amazing! Congrats!" she said, way more supportive than usual. Sandile, though? His expression switched to full-on dad mode — concerned, worried, the whole package.

"Wait, are you sure?" he asked, his voice dropping into serious territory. "What if there's an emergency or something? You should be close, so we can help."

Mmabatho smiled softly. "I get it, Sandile, and I really appreciate that. But it's only a 15-minute drive from here. I'll be fine. Plus, I'll visit all the time and keep you guys updated. It's just... I need this," she added, meeting his eyes with a look that said, Trust me, I got this.

Khanyiswa rolled her eyes, but in that amused, not-annoyed way. "See? She's got it handled. Let her breathe, Sandile. Besides, I bet she's over living here 24/7."

Sandile sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Okay, fine. Just promise me you'll call if you need anything, alright?"

"Promise," Mmabatho said, grinning. The tension in the room eased, and for the first time in weeks, she felt a sense of control over her life. This was her fresh start, and she wasn't going to let anything mess it up.
