Cassie groaned as Lucienâs booming voice shattered her sleep.
âWake up, princess! Youâre not staying in bed all day!â
She grumbled, burying her head under the pillow. âI need a new alarm clock. One that doesnât yell.â
Ignoring her protests, Lucien burst into the room, his silver hair catching the morning light. âCome on, lazybones. Youâre coming with me to the gym today. Trust me, youâll thank me later.â
Cassie peeked out from beneath the pillow, her green eyes glaring. âDo I have a choice?â
âNot really,â he smirked, leaning against the doorframe. âBreakfast is ready. Eat, then get dressed.â
---
Downstairs, Phoenix was already at the counter, sipping coffee while scanning his tablet, his sharp blue eyes focused. The table was set with eggs,
Cassie sat down, grabbing a piece of toast. âMorning. Whereâs Aleks?â
Phoenixâs expression tightened, though he masked it with a sip of coffee. âBusy.â
Cassieâs eyebrows furrowed. âBusy avoiding me, you mean.â
Lucien snorted as he sat across from her, digging into his plate of eggs. âCan you blame him? Youâve got the man twisted in knots.â
Cassie ignored the jab, her appetite fading at the thought of Aleksanderâs cold shoulder. She focused on the conversation instead. âAny news on Kai?â
Phoenix sighed, setting his tablet down. âNot yet. Niccoâs out looking for him. Kai has a habit of disappearing, but itâs never been this long. Itâs worrying.â
Cassie frowned. âWhy does he do it? The disappearing act?â
Lucien and Phoenix exchanged glances. It was Phoenix who answered. âFamily drama. Kaiâs father⦠heâs a piece of work. Heâs part of the yakuza and has been dragging Kai into that world since he was a kid. Itâs not something Kai talks about much.â
Cassie felt a pang of sympathy. âI hope heâs okay.â
Phoenix offered her a small smile. âWeâll find him. In the meantime, youâve got other things to focus on. Like surviving Lucienâs training.â
---
The gym was a sprawling space filled with the sounds of clinking weights and grunts of exertion. Cassie felt a pang of intimidation as Lucien led her to a private area in the back.
âYouâre here to learn how to defend yourself,â Lucien said, tossing her a pair of gloves. âIf youâre gonna be in our world, you need to know how to fight.â
Cassie slipped on the gloves, feeling the weight of them. âAnd if I donât want to be in your world?â
Lucien smirked. âToo late for that, sweetheart.â
They started with the basics. Lucien demonstrated stances, punches, and blocks, and Cassie mimicked his movements. She caught on quickly, her determination shining through.
âGood,â Lucien praised after she landed a clean jab on the practice pad he was holding. âYouâve got a mean punch for someone so small.â
âThanks,â she said, wiping sweat from her brow. âYears of punching pillows in frustration.â
Lucien laughed, but the moment was interrupted by his phone buzzing. He glanced at the screen, his face tightening.
âItâs Phoenix,â he muttered, stepping away to take the call.
Cassie took a sip from her water bottle, trying to catch her breath. Lucien returned a minute later, his expression serious.
âThey found Kai.â
Cassieâs heart leapt with relief. âIs he okay?â
Lucien didnât answer directly. âWeâre heading back. Letâs go.â
---
The drive home was tense. Cassie noticed Lucienâs grip on the steering wheel tightening as they neared the house.
âYouâll be fine here,â he said abruptly when they arrived, not realizing the implication of his words until he was halfway out of the car.
Cassie stared after him, a sinking feeling settling in her chest. She was alone.
Inside, the house was eerily quiet. She wandered to the kitchen, contemplating making tea when her phone buzzed.
âGwen?â she answered, her voice laced with both relief and suspicion.
âCassie! Oh my God, are you okay? Iâve been trying to reach you,â Gwenâs voice was frantic on the other end.
Cassie frowned. âIâm fine. Why havenât you called back sooner? Iâve been trying to get in touch with you for days.â
There was a pause. âItâs⦠complicated. Look, where are you? We need to talk.â
Cassieâs unease deepened. Something about Gwenâs tone felt off. âIâm⦠safe. Whatâs going on?â
âI canât explain over the phone,â Gwen said hurriedly. âBut you need to be careful. Youâre not safe, Cassie. Theyâre looking for you.â
âWhoâs looking for me?â Cassie demanded, but the line went dead before she could get an answer.
She stared at the phone, her pulse racing. The house suddenly felt too big, too empty. For the first time in a long time, Cassie felt genuinely afraid.
