I've discovered a few more things.
If you already called someone "big sister" or "big brother" originally, it seems the AI doesnât force you to use different terms. Thereâs no sudden repetition like âRui Big Sister Big Sisterâ or âKaiser Big Brother Big Brother.â
So if you start by calling someone âhyungâ or âsenior brother,â the AI doesnât feel the need to change it.
It seems the AIâs judgment is that âa little sister who calls her big brother âhyungâ is also cute.â An unusual taste, but some would call it ârefined appreciation.â
âThe rules are simple. Just escape from the lab by any means.â
Kaiser looked a bit baffled but continued the broadcast professionally.
âBut just escaping wouldnât be much fun, would it? So, letâs make a wager.
Place your bets on the âthree people you think are most likely to escape the lab first.â
However, you canât bet on yourself, and opting out isnât an option. You must choose and bet on three people.
If you guess the first-place escapee, youâll receive six times your betting chips. If you guess second, four times, and for third, twice.
When the game is over, the person with the worst betting results and the last person to escape will face a penalty game.â
After Kaiser explained the rules, I suddenly found five coins in my hand. They were meant for betting on the escapees, no doubt.
âPeople with brains and a good sense would have an advantage here.â
But did anyone like that even exist here?
âWell, maybe I should bet three coins on Rui.â
She might not be the most intuitive, but sheâs definitely smart. Iâd heard she graduated from a well-known university in Japan.
Why someone like that ended up a VTuber, I couldnât say, but she must have her reasons.
I put one coin on Son Nalim, too.
She was tenacious, more so than anyone else, so I figured sheâd find a way to escape.
The last coin went to Sora.
Other than Rui and Son Nalim, I didnât have anyone else in mind, so I decided to trust Sora. Sheâs on my team and the closest to me in this room.
âWith everyoneâs bets placed, letâs start the game.â
Flash!
In an instant, my vision flickered, and the surroundings changed.
Was this⦠a hospital room?
âHm?â
I tilted my head, crossing my arms.
Didnât Kaiser say it was a game about escaping from a lab?
But no matter how I looked at it, this was a hospital.
It seemed like a three-bed room.
In each of the three corners, there was a hospital bed, while the fourth corner had a partitioned wallâprobably a restroom for patients who had trouble moving around.
Next to each bed was a cabinet.
There was a small refrigerator on one wall, but it didnât seem to be working.
Overall, it looked like a hospital room that had been abandoned for quite a while.
The furniture was slightly worn, and the wallpaper was cracked in places. So, maybe it was an abandoned hospital?
âThereâs only one exit.â
Apart from the restroom door, there was only one door leading out to the corridor.
And even without getting close, I could see that it had a door lock installed for some reason.
It was the most out-of-place item in the room. Hospital rooms generally need to be accessible for nurses, so it wouldnât make sense to lock it with a door lock every time.
As I stared at the door lock, I noticed a small screen with text displayed.
âPlease enter your name.â
Thatâs what it read.
Clunk
âEek! Oh, you scared meâ¦! Laura, youâre here too!â
The bathroom door suddenly opened, and out came someone I recognized, though not someone I saw often.
It was Son Nalim.
âLong time no see.â
âYeah! Itâs been a while!â
Son Nalim approached, glancing around.
âIt looks like thereâs no one else⦠Just the two of us?â
I looked around to confirm, but there was no one else here besides Son Nalim and me.
With Kaiserâs âThe game will begin nowâ announcement, we had been transported to this hospital.
So, it seemed safe to assume the game had started and that other participants were starting in different locations.
âMaybe itâs set up for us to start in pairs?â
âCould be.â
I agreed with Son Nalimâs question, all while pondering what to do about her. Should I?
âIf this is a battle royale-style game, maybe itâd be smart to take her out right from the start.â
Does thinking like this make me a cruel person?
But itâs just a game, after all.
Plus, there was the rule about the last-place penalty. If I eliminated Son Nalim here, I could at least avoid coming in last myself.
So, itâs worth considering as a tactical option.
But on second thought, eliminating her might not be to my advantage.
âI did place a betting chip on her, after all.â
Iâd put one chip on Son Nalim.
If she finishes in third place, itâll double, and if she wins, itâll increase sixfold.
So, having Son Nalim survive and escape would benefit me more. Eliminating her would cost me more than Iâd gain.
âSo thatâs how they prevent PK (player-killing) here.â
I crossed my arms without realizing it.
Preventing PK through pre-game betting? Kaiser put some thought into this.
âFor now, it looks like weâll have to work together.â
Son Nalim suggested.
Maybe sheâd arrived at the same conclusion. Perhaps she, too, had considered eliminating me here.
But her offer of cooperation suggested sheâd also bet on me.
There was no reason to refuse her suggestion to cooperate. I nodded.
âOh! Laura, thereâs a door lock here! Maybe we can get out by entering the password?â
Son Nalim reported with a slight sense of excitement.
Instead of looking at her, I gazed at the window on the opposite side. The windows were sealed tightly.
It seemed to be night outside.
Darkness lay thick, and it didnât look like a height I could safely jump from.
âEscaping through the window seems impossible.â
I tried tugging on it slightly, but it wouldnât budge. There were no tools in sight to break it, and the glass seemed reinforced, making it nearly impossible to shatter.
Peeking into the restroom where Son Nalim had been, it appeared ordinary.
Since she had already examined it, there didnât seem to be any need for me to investigate further.
âLaura, the door lock says âPlease enter your name!â Should I enter mine?â
âIf you enter the wrong answer, you might end up like Sina.â
âAhâ¦!â
Realizing the oversight, Son Nalim stepped back from the door lock.
âTh-then what should we do?â
âTry the cabinets.â
âHuh?â
âOpen up the cabinets and see whatâs inside.â
Son Nalim tilted her head but began checking each cabinet one by one.
âThereâs nothing in here.â
âThen check the beds. There might be something hidden between the sheets.â
â?â
She searched the beds thoroughly, sticking her hands between the sheets and even checking under the bed.
âNothing here either!â
âWhat about the refrigerator?â
âLetâs see⦠Nope, nothing here either.â
âThere wasnât anything unusual in the restroom, right?â
âRight!â
âThen type âyour nameâ into the lock.â
â...What?â@@novelbin@@
Son Nalim hesitated, looking confused. Why was she spacing out now?
I placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
âGo ahead.â
âOh⦠right, yes!â
Following my instruction, she typed âyour nameâ into the door lock.
The lock clicked open, and the door swung wide.
âWow, I was about to enter âSon Nalimââthat wouldâve been a disaster. Youâre amazing, Laura!â
âAm I only now starting to impress you?â
âHaha⦠But what was that all about earlier?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know, checking the cabinets, searching the beds, opening the fridge.â
Son Nalim asked curiously.
The reason was obvious, wasnât it?
âIn these types of games, itâs important to search thoroughly. You never know if hidden information or gimmicks might be there.â
âRight? â¦So, was that why you made me do it?â
âOf course. Iâm the Dukeâs daughter, after all.â
If I scurried around like that, it would only damage my dignity.
âEvery task has its proper place. Iâm in charge of strategy, and you handle the grunt work.â
ââ¦Laura, please donât treat me like a servant. One âSinaâ is enough.â
Son Nalim said, looking slightly exasperated.
After we left the hospital room, the next area waiting for us was an abandoned factory.
âThe map lacks consistency.â
But maybe thatâs the point. We were told it was a lab, yet we keep encountering maps that arenât labs at all.
Come to think of it, weâre supposed to be test subjects, and weâre escaping as part of a test of the monsterâs abilities.
This could mean that what weâre seeing is an âillusion created by the monster.â
Otherwise, the concept wouldnât make sense.
âIâll wait here while you investigate.â
ââ¦â
Son Nalim looked like she had a lot to say but started investigating anyway once I gave her a nod. Since I had already solved the first problem, she didnât have much choice.
I waited comfortably, seated on the windowsill, as she finished her investigation and came back.
âLaura⦠I think youâd better come over here.â
Her voice had a hint of unease.
Sensing that something unpleasant awaited, I followed her lead.
Soon after,
âLaura big sis! Laura biiig sis!â
ãMental Degradation Level 3ã
ãWhen interacting with high-ranked survivors, you frequently address them as âbig brotherâ or âbig sister.âã
ãYou tend to cling to survivors.ã
ãYou frequently act like an elementary schooler.ã
In every way, she looked like an elementary school kid.
Her usual fierce expression was replaced by an innocent smile unique to children.
And she was waving at me.
It was Mashina.
Carried on Soraâs back.
ââ¦So this is what happened.â
Sora let out a sigh.
Sora, too, had shrunk slightly.
