The homeroom teacher gestured towards the girl standing beside her, speaking in a clear, high-pitched voice, âEveryone, please welcome the new student, Yoon Yiyoung from AB Elementary School.â
âWould you like to introduce yourself? Or should I do it?â
âIs it okay if I do it?â
âYes. Of course.â
Yiyoung had dark, tanned skin. Her bright eyes sparkled as she looked straight ahead.
âHi, Iâm Yoon Yiyoung. I was nervous about transferring, but now that Iâm hereâ¦â she let out a mischievous sigh of relief before continuing, âIt is so nice to meet you all. I want to get along with all of you. Letâs become friends, okay?â
âNice to meet you, Yoon Yiyoung,â her cla*smates chorused. Yiyoung smiled at their welcoming response. It seemed she had been anxious for no reason.
âOh, I forgot to mention the most important thing. Yiyoungâs grades are remarkable. She achieved one of the top ranks in the national rankings. She should be an inspiration and a good influence for all of you,â the teacher boasted.
Yiyoung flinched. The teacher shouldnât have said that. She didnât mind accepting a compliment, but doing so in front of everyone was akin to an invitation to make enemies, especially since bullying was such a widespread issue. But Yiyoung was careful not to reveal her feelings. She might be only 13 years old, but she was different from her peers. She had learned how to be independent from a young, tender age.
âLetâs figure out the atmosphere first, then Iâll see how it goes from there,â she thought.
The teacher pointed to a seat at the end of the row and said, âYou can go sit over there.â
âOkay,â Yiyoung answered politely and walked toward her designated desk. As she drew closer to her desk, she spotted the boy occupying the desk adjacent to her seat.
âHi,â she greeted him. The boy didnât speak, only fixing a frigid stare at Yiyoung in response.
âDid he not hear me?â she thought. Yiyoung took her seat, hanging her backpack on the side before leaning toward him. She raised her voice this time, making sure he heard her clearly, âHi. Iâm Yiyoung. Nice to meet you.â
The boy still stared at her, his lips slightly curving up this time.
âWhat? Is he laughing at me?â Yiyoung wondered.
âLet me know if you need any help,â she added, pretending not to notice his mocking smirk.
Muyeol, the boy Yiyoung attempted to converse with, turned his head forward and stared off into space, thinking, âWhat a funny transfer girl.â
With skin as dark as sand, she kept smiling like an idiot. Muyeol furrowed his eyebrows. This was annoying. He had been sitting all by himself up until now. But now, for the first time in the sixth grade, he had to put up with a deskmate.
Soon, there was an intermission, and a loud exclamation pierced his ears. Muyeol leaned back on his chair as he examined the cla*sroom and found Yiyoung, busy chattering loudly as she attempted to become friends with everyone.
âHa! What an idiot,â he thought. Those kids did not want to be friends with her, but Yiyoung seemed oblivious to their intentions. She smiled carelessly as she chatted with them. Muyeol averted his eyes from the scene, choosing to look outside the window.
She continued to laugh and yell loudly. Her voice annoyed him, like a mosquito buzzing near his ear.
âOkay, from now on, Iâll call you âsh*tty Yoon.ââ
Muyeol dubbed her as âsh*tty Yoonâ because thatâs what he viewed the cla*smates as: sh*t. She was just like a fly hovering around a pile of sh*t.
âsh*tty Yoon. Thatâs right. Youâre âsh*tty Yoonâ from this day onward.â
* * *
Once she was finally done with school, Yiyoung felt relieved. Wow. She had been really nervous, but her day turned out better than she had expected. Contrary to her worries, her cla*smates didnât bully her because of the teacherâs compliments.
The kids in her cla*s were honest. They didnât try to hide their arroganceâ¦
âSo you are the top student, huh? Did you receive a special recommendation for your transfer?â
âWhere do you live?â
âWhat do your parents do?â
But they asked too many unnecessary questions.
âSorry. Think of it as a welcome ceremony. Itâs been a while since we had a new student,â another student told her.
The kids attending this elite elementary school were all from wealthy families, but Yiyoung didnât get intimidated. She told them she belonged to an average family. There was no reason to publicly announce her situation, but there was no need to hide it either.
The moment they realized Yiyoung was not from a rich family, her cla*smatesâ enthusiasm died down.
âOh, okay.â That was all they said. After that, they neither treated her as an outcast nor accepted her wholeheartedly. Still, Yiyoung did not mind it. It all depended on how she took it. And she did not think this was a bad start.
âYouâre so unlucky. To think that you ended up sitting beside Muyeol, of all people,â a cla*smate said.
âWhy? Is something wrong with him?â
âHeâs a scion, and he looks down on all of us. He never even comes to the cafeteria. Guess he doesnât even want to eat around us.â
âA scion? What do you mean? Is he a jerk?â Yiyoung asked, and everyone laughed at her questions.
âIf only he were just a jerk. It would have been much easier to control him.â
âHuh?â
