âDonât just stand there. Call the doctor, his number is on the notepad beside the phone.â
Dick ran into the house, leaving Iris on her knees alone, begging Nana to take another breath.
âDo you hear that?â Kayla finally spoke. âDo you hear her heart?â
âI do. I do K.â Scarlet gasped beside her.
Nanaâs heartbeat was getting weaker by the second. Her fleeting breaths struggling out of her lungs.
âDo something. Someone needs to do something.â She sobbed, turning to the huge crowd gathered around her grandmother.
âWe need to wait for the doctor my love.â
âNo, she canât die.â Kayla had made up her mind; she wasnât going to let her grandmother die. She didnât have much time; her heartbeat was getting weaker. If she was going to change her she had to do it now.
âKayla that is not the way.â Solara could see what she was thinking.
âI canât let her die.â Kayla never took her eyes off her dying grandmother.
âYou have to Hun. That is how the world works.â
âDonât talk to me about how the world works. She is my grandmother and I owe her everything.â
âI know you do, but this isnât the way.â
Kayla dropped to her knees beside her frantic mother. She watched as Iris tried to revive her in any way she could.
âI have to,â Kayla repeated to herself.
She pulled her lips exposing her lethal teeth; slowly she leaned closer to her grandmother. She was going to bite her while she still had a heartbeat. The venom would spread through her body and by the next morning she would be as good as new.
Just as she got closer to Nanaâs exposed shoulder, Solara wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her away. He carried her to the other end yard, as she bucked against his massive body.
âYou canât do this Kayla.â He trapped her between the fence and his body.
âI have to, I canât let her die.â Kayla could not think of anything else but that.
âYou canât.â Solara was relieved when Xavier, Eric, and the twins came to back him up. There was no way Kayla would get through the five of them.
âYou need to let me do this.â She cupped both her palms on his face, her eyes pleading.
âI canât my love. I canât let you do this.â Solara was fighting against his nature of giving her whatever she asked for.
âPlease.â
Solara couldnât stand the begging anymore. He had to get away before he gave her what she wanted. âStay with her, Iâll be right back.â
He went back to where the crowd had gathered. Scarlet knelt beside Nana who was still immobile.
âHow is she doing?â
I canât hear a heartbeat. She is barely breathing.
âWhere is the doctor?â
âStephan and SJ went to get him.â
âOk, ok. What do we do?â Solara didnât know what to do in this situation.
âNothing, we wait for the doctor.â Scarlet gasped.
âKayla is going crazy.â
âWhere is she?â
âThe boys have her trapped by the fence. I could let her do it.â
âDo what?â Was she going to change her?
Solara subtly nodded his response.
She is desperate, isnât she?
Solara nodded once more.
âKayla.â Nana struggled to get the words out.
Everyoneâs attention shifted back to her. They stared at her in disbelief and relief.
âNana?â Scarlet whispered.
âWhere is my little girl?â
âXavier!â Solara called out to Kaylaâs guards to release her.
She rushed to her, dropping to her knees beside her. âNana. Nana are you alright.â
âYou look, beautiful sweetheart. Donât cry this is how itâs supposed to be.â
Kayla wished she was capable of that single act. Her eyes were dried up and she couldnât cry for her grandmother no matter how hard she tried.
âDonât say that.â Tearless sobs heaved from her chest. âYouâll be fine. Just wait and see.â
âNo my love,â she coughed, âThe Lord let me live this long so that I could see you happy and married. And now that I have itâs time for me to join him.â
âWhat about me. Stay here with me.â Kayla wept.
âYou have your husband. You have Scarlet, her husband, and your friends. Iris will always be here for you but I canât be.â She stroked her cheek.
âBut Nana-,â
âNo buts young lady. This is how itâs supposed to be.â
âKayla,â Solara called out to her. It was ripping him apart seeing her hurt like this. Knowing that there was nothing he could do for her.
âWhy wonât you let me do it.â
âBecause that isnât how itâs supposed to be.â
âBut-,â
âShh! My little grandbaby; you are all grown up and you have a new life. Live it, and donât worry about me.â
âThe doctor is here.â SJ ran through the crowd and stood beside his mother, his father, and the doctor behind him.
âWhatâs going on Mrs. Cooper?â He got his stethoscope out of his medical bag and listened to her heart.
âDonât bother doctor. I know itâs my time and Iâm ready for it.â
