The next morning, Chris fussed over Jaxson but noticed he seemed much more himself. His wolf still wasnât with him as far as he knew, but he was ready to be out of bed, still keeping Chris close by⦠he still seemed to have a fear Chris would spontaneously disappear.
Understandable in his eyes.
âMark.â Chrisâ wolf was being quite insistent after breakfast. He could only promise his wolf, that soon, soon they would mark. He nuzzled Jaxsonâs hair while the larger male laid over Chris like a weighted blanket. He never felt being crushed would be a form of security⦠but with Jaxson it was different. He was glad to be pressed so far into the hard sofa that he could feel the frame below the cushions.
âNeed a bigger sofa,â Jaxson mumbled, wriggling his feet that were hanging over the arm to make a point.
âIâll see what we can get,â Chris promised, âA two-seater isnât really ideal.â
âYou sure Iâm alright staying here?â
âWhat do you mean? Do you not want to-â
âCourse. I just⦠not sure. It doesnât matter. I need to get some more of my stuff soon.â
âIâll get someone to get it⦠I suppose you wish to pack your stuff from your parents?â
âI will have toâ¦â
Chris could sense an unease in the other male. âDo you feel comfortable in the palace?â
âDo you?â
âYes and no. Itâs my home⦠My family is here. Iâm not sure Iâll ever feel comfortable.â
âIâll get mum to pack a few things.â
âIâd like to meet your family.â
âSoon.â
âHave you⦠told them?â Chris asked carefully.
âNope.â Jaxsonâs fingers splayed around Chrisâ ribs as he pulled himself up a little. âSuppose I should do that.â
âNervous?â
âNah. Be fine. Weâll mark first⦠make it official. Then⦠Iâll face the music.â
âDo you think⦠theyâll accept?â Chris ran his hands through auburn hair, down his t-shirted back.
âI hope so⦠I can only hope.â
âI can come with you.â
Jaxson gave him a soft smile, shuffling up his body before planting his lips of Chrisâ, âThank you, but you donât have to.â He caressed Chrisâ cheek. âI wish my wolf was back.â
âMe too.â
âIâve got an announcement. Can I come see you?â Jesseâs link came through.
âHmm, Jax? Jesseâs coming over. Says he has something to tell us.â
He nodded, shifting from his position laying over him in protection. âDo you know what about?â
âNo. He didnât say.â
A knock brought the pair fully upright before Jesse strode in. âGood to see you in better shape,â he greeted Jaxson.
âYes, Gamma, Iâm grateful a search party was put together.â
âOf course, youâre one of us. We do anything for our brothers.â
âJess. You wanted to tell us something?â Chris prompted.
âOh. Yeah. I spoke to Laura, she admitted all of it. She managed to find some rogues who snuck into palace grounds. She hired the witch to stop your mateship.â
âShe did?â
âIt is what she has admitted. I canât say what will happen to her yet, it seemed banishment did not work. For now she will remain in the cells. The guard she seduced has been suitably punished.â
âSo itâs done⦠itâs over?â Jaxson asked somewhat dumbfounded.
âYes. We have a confession. We will scent and search for the rogues, but for now the border has extra guards. I still want to implement that all royals have at least one personal guard on top of those within the palace. I know Former King Xander was opposed to personal guards, but Iâve spoken to Marc and he feels itâs a suitable change.â
âI donât want guards on me.â
âChris,â Jaxson warned calmly.
âNo. I wonât have guards. I hate having people following me about.â
âChrisâ¦â another warning, but Chris didnât much care.
âNo. I will not tolerate it.â
Jaxson grabbed the back of Chrisâ neck, squeezing, âChris. You will do what is best for your safety.â
âI canât have people following me about!â Yes he was digging his heels in, but his mouth wouldnât allow anything else! He wanted to agree, not need to make any fuss. But he couldnât. He couldnât lie.
Jaxsonâs hand squeezed again, trying to calm him. âIâm sure Gamma Jesse will accept me guarding you in the day, then there will be guards outside the suite, as is the current situation.â
âI feel that may be satisfactory, if you are well with that, Jaxson?â Jesse agreed.
âOf course.â
âChris, is that a compromise youâll accept?â
âItâs more reasonable that being followed at every step,â he conceded. âThank you.â
After Jesse left, Jaxson let out a chuckling breath. âAre you always so stubborn?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âNothing.â He grabbed Chrisâ hips and transferred him onto Jaxsonâs thighs. âI suppose this is improper of a royal?â
âI donât give a shit whatâs proper.â
âGood.â Jaxson nuzzled his chest,
***
âI want to go for a walk,â Jaxson announced over lunch the next day.
âWant me to come?â Chris asked, playing with his stew that the chef had prepared more than eating it.
âDo wolves have claws?â came the sarcastic response, a warm smile on Jaxsonâs lips.
Chris chuckled, âGot anywhere in mind?â
âItâs a surprise.â
âI donât like surprises,â Chris bit back instantly. This truth thing was getting old. He needed just a little more control over his tongue.
âYouâre just going on a walk. The destination is where our feet carry us.â
âThink that wolfsbane has addled your mind,â Chris mumbled, scraping his plate clear of potato.
Jaxson firmed his grip around Chrisâ hand as they went further into the wood. âWhere are we going?â Chris asked for the hundredth time.
âYouâll see.â
He huffed, that had been his response⦠a hundred times.
âI donât like surprises.â
âYouâll like this, I promise.â He squeezed Chrisâ hand in reassurance. âPromise,â he reiterated. âTrust me?â
âCourse I trust you.â He sped up for his footsteps to be in sync with Jaxsonâs, making their way through the trees, deeper into the wood.
âAt least give me a clue-â
Jaxson stopped abruptly, tugging Chris to a standstill before his chin was grasped. âShut up, or we turn around and you donât get the surprise.â
âShutting up.â
âGood.â A peck pressed to his lips, âBe a good pup.â His strides lengthened, an almost hurry to get to their destination.
âIâm not a-â Jaxson gave him a sharp look, cutting off his protest. Pressing his finger to his lips, he pretended he was suitably chastised.
Walking for a further half an hour, Chris could hear water alongside the general sounds of the wood. Jaxson tugged Chris to the left suddenly, not expecting it, he stumbled but righted himself to see a babbling brook. Gleaming rock pools fed into each other before the water disappeared below. âHow did you find this?â Chris asked, instantly going to the tiny waterfall that couldnât have been more than a foot high, running his fingers under the cool fresh water. The sounds and smells instantly soothing the chaos that had occurred the last few days.
They were safe. It was over.
âJust came across it while patrolling. You like it?â
âItâs beautiful.â
âGood.â Jaxson stripped his shoes and socks, only for Chris to follow, the spongy moss felt more luxurious than carpet or pelt. Wriggling his toes, he happily watched the water rippling down in tiny âvâs to the next pool.
âPromise I get to see you near water more often.â
âHuh?â Chris turned to see Jaxson settling himself on the moss, watching him intently.
âIâve never seen you so relaxed. The weight you hold has gone.â
âI⦠well I suppose.â Easing himself onto the ground he soon found Jaxsonâs hand cupping his cheek.
âYou look younger. Think Iâm a cradle snatcher.â Jaxson yanked him forward, before he knew it, he was sprawled on the moss, Jaxsonâs weight above him. Lips collided with an instant growling moan ripping from Chris. He couldnât help it. He needed him. Their tongues coiled in a dance they now knew well, each playing their part without a second thought.
âSafe to say your strengthâs back,â Chis panted, drawing away an inch.
âSomething else is too.â His eyes coiled to beast, fangs protruded beyond his lips.
âWhen did that happen?â He reached up, running his thumb against the ivory.
âThis morning. So I have a question for his Royal Highness.â
âYes Royal Guard?â
âBe mine. Forever.â His dark brown eyes trailed from his lips to his neck. âBare my mark for all to see. Allow me the honour to be with you until my dying breath.â
A smile broke out over Chrisâ lips. âWill you do the same? Can you cope with me for that long? Will you bare the mark of a Hunterson⦠me?â
âWithout a doubt.â
Chris pushed his canines forward, drawing from his wolf in human form. While his eyes were always that of a beast, they glinted, a small flash. âTogether,â Chris rumbled.
âAlways.â
