At home Pei Jin reflected about Wang Fu Muâs note.
Yan Shi Ning felt Pei Jin toss and turn on the bed.
âPei Jin, are you a cong you bing?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
Yan Shi Ning kicked Pei Jin who was crawling under her inner robe.
âShi Ning, your temper is worse by the day,â Pei Jin teased.
Yan Shi Ning didnât want to admit Pei Jin was right about her temper.
âWhat are you going to do if you canât tolerate my temper?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âOf course I can tolerate your temper,â Pei Jin said.
Pei Jin knew if he teased Yan Shi Ning too much then she would kick him outside their chamber.
Yan Shi Ning knew Pei Jin was troubled about something otherwise he wouldnât have trouble sleeping. âPei Jin, whatâs wrong? Did something happen in the palace?â
âShi Ning, what do you think about tenth brother?â Pei Jin asked.
âHeâs soft, calm and beautiful,â Yan Shi Ning said. âAt a glance he looks like someone harmless.â
âWhat if my harmless tenth brother wants to harm me?â Pei Jin asked.
âWhat?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
Pei Jin explained to Yan Shi Ning about Wang Fu Muâs note.
âWe didnât leave a trace at the harvest festival,â Yan Shi Ning said. âHow did the crown prince know we were involved?â
âI donât know why he knows but he wouldnât want to warn imperial father unless he has evidence,â Pei Jin said.
Yan Shi Ning thought perhaps it was her fault that the crown prince found evidence. She slowly recalled everything that happened at the Yan Manor and she suspected the crown prince was involved in Yan Shi Tingâs death.
âPei Jin, do you remember I told you Yan Shi Tingâs death was suspicious?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
Pei Jin nodded his head. He remembered Yan Shi Ning wasnât certain if someone pushed Yan Shi Ting into the well or Yan Shi Ting accidently fell into the well.
âShi Ning are you saying that tenth brother killed Yan Shi Ting?â Pei Jin asked.
âThat day Yan Shi Ting scared me and I left her in the gardens,â Yan Shi Ning said. âA while later her body was found in the well. I remember in the gardens thereâs a sculpture. Perhaps the crown prince was hiding behind it that day, overheard what I said to Yan Shi Ting and thatâs how he knows we were involved in the wedding incident.â
âShi Ning if your speculations are true then why would tenth brother kill Yan Shi Ting?â Pei Jin asked.
Yan Shi Ning couldnât believe someone who looked harmless like the crown prince would push Yan Shi Ting into the well. âPei Jin, perhaps my speculations are wrong and the crown prince didnât kill Yan Shi Ting.â
Pei Jin knew Yan Shi Ning was frightened that a harmless Pei Lam was capable of heartlessly killing Yan Shi Ting. âShi Ning, I didnât want to go see tenth brother but now I need to go see him.â
Yan Shi Ning heard the sadness in Pei Jinâs tone. After Bei Dou captured the crown prince, Bei Dou locked the crown prince in a secure place. But Pei Jin never visited the crown prince and she thought perhaps Pei Jin wanted to maintain the small brotherly bond between them.
âIn the past I was reluctant to let Bei Dou deal with the crown prince,â Pei Jin said. âBut now I know I was naive. If imperial father found out the truth then three years of firewood collected would be burned within a shichen hour.â
Yan Shi Ning was scared Pei Jinâs fear was true and the emperor would kill Pei Jin if the emperor found out the truth.
âPei Jin, why does the emperor hate you?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âI thought about why for many years,â Pei Jin said. âI even suspected I wasnât imperial fatherâs blood son.â
âPei Jin, you know thatâs not true,â Yan Shi Ning said. âIf youâre not the emperorâs blood son then you wouldnât be alive now.â
âThatâs why at the right opportunity I need to ask my imperial father why he hates me,â Pei Jin said.
Yan Shi Ningâs heart ached for Pei Jin because it was something that troubled his heart for years.
âPei Jin, thereâs something else,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âWhat?â Pei Jin asked.
âWhy would Wang Fu Mu who is the closest person to the emperor pass a note to you?â Yan Shi Ning asked suspiciously.
Pei Jin hesitated to answer.
âLast time you promised you wouldnât hide anything else from me!â Yan Shi Ning said.
âShi Ning... you didnât ask me about this so I didnât lie to you,â Pei Jin said. âShi Ning... Iâll tell you another secret I havenât told anyone else before.â
Yan Shi Ning silently listened to Pei Jin talk about Wang Fu Mu.
âWhen Wang Fu Mu was a young eunuch he was bullied in the palace,â Pei Jin said. âLike when he was thirteen years old he knocked over a vase and was nearly beaten to death. He used the strength he had left to run and hide in a chamber. Inside the chamber was a young man who pulled out a pill and put it in Wang Fu Muâs life. The young man climbed the window after he heard other people chasing after Wang Fu Mu. The pill Wang Fu Mu swallowed was a rare pill that protected a personâs qi. It saved Wang Fu Muâs life. At that time Wang Fu Mu didnât know who his mysterious young savor was. But it motivated Wang Fu Mu to survive long enough to repay his savor so he slowly built connections in the palace.â
Pei Jin held Yan Shi Ningâs hand. âThree years later Wang Fu Mu met his savor again. It was my imperial uncle, Prince Chen Nan who returned to the palace on horseback after conquering Southern Jiang. Wang Fu Mu didnât dare to say that he knew the heroic Prince Chen Nan. So imperial uncle didnât recognise Wang Fu Mu. Later their fates changed. Wang Fu Mu crawled into a high position and my imperial uncleâs status slowly diminished. Wang Fu Muâs heart ached for his savor. Wang Fu Mu secretly followed imperial uncle to help imperial uncle at the right opportunity. But he failed to find out imperial father had put a sleeping pill into imperial uncleâs wine cup until after imperial uncle fell off a horse and died.â
Yan Shi Ning felt Pei Jinâs sadness.
âWang Fu Mu secretly grieved for imperial uncleâs death while serving imperial father,â Pei Jin said. âWang Fu Mu failed to repay imperial uncle for saving his life. But Wang Fu Mu remembered out of all the emperorâs sons, imperial uncle loved me the most. So Wang Fu Mu secretly protected me to repay imperial uncle. Imperial father regards Wang Fu Mu highly because imperial father believes Wang Fu Mu doesnât favor any of imperial fatherâs sons. Even I didnât know Wang Fu Mu was secretly protecting me for a long time.â
âHow did you find out?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âShi Ning, do you remember the first day I arrived in Xuan Qing?â Pei Jin asked.
Yan Shi Ningâs teeth itched while she remembered her pitiful six-year-old self who was bullied by Pei Jin.
âDuring that period Consort Chen died,â Pei Jin said. âAssassins were sent to kill me but Wang Fu Mu warned me to be careful otherwise I wouldnât be alive now... like during Consort Chenâs funeral, Wang Fu Mu warned me to be careful of my food and drinks. The empress sent a bowl of soup to me and I listened to Wang Fu Muâs warning. I used a silver needle to test the bowl of soup, it was poisoned. Afterward I looked for Wang Fu Mu and he told me about how imperial uncle saved his life. Then he advised me to follow my teacher to Xuan Qing on the pretence that Iâm grieving for Consort Chenâs death...â
âIs that why you came to Xuan Qing?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âYes,â Pei Jin said.
âImperial uncle said he was powerless to help you but he helped you a lot,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âThatâs right,â Pei Jin said. âWithout imperial uncle then I would have died long ago. I wouldnât have met you and we wouldnât have conceived a child together... Shi Ning, we canât hide your pregnancy for much longer.â
âWhy?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âImperial father wants me to follow seventh brotherâs example,â Pei Jin said. âImperial father asked me if he could choose a second wife and concubines for me.â
Yan Shi Ning hid the sadness in her heart and smiled. âThatâs a good suggestion. I think our home is a little cold. If there are more people then itâll become lively.â
Pei Jin and Yan Shi Ning silently looked at each otherâs eyes while smiling.
âWife, how can you lie this well?â Pei Jin asked.
Yan Shi Ning looked innocently at Pei Jin. âWhat I said earlier was sincere.â
Pei Jinâs hands moved closer to Yan Shi Ningâs body. âTruly?â
âYes,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âShi Ning, why arenât you scared of being tickled anymore?â Pei Jin asked.
âIâm used to you,â Yan Shi Ning said.
Pei Jin frowned, he couldnât tickle Yan Shi Ning to force her to tell the truth.
âWhen will we need to tell others Iâm pregnant?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âWeâll wait a little longer to protect our child,â Pei Jin said.
âIâll be more cautious after others know Iâm pregnant,â Yan Shi Ning promised.
Pei Jin hugged Yan Shi Ning. âShi Ning, donât worry. Iâm here to protect you. When Iâm not here Iâll ask my guards to secretly protect you.â
The night sky darkened but Yan Shi Ning couldnât sleep.
Pei Jin remembered Xiao Zaiâs confession and his eyes brightened.
âWife, tonight we canât sleep,â Pei Jin said. âWhy donât we do it together?â
âNo,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âYes,â Pei Jin said.
Pei Jin took off Yan Shi Ningâs inner robe and his head crawled under her undergarments.
Yan Shi Ning felt Pei Jinâs warm mouth suckled her breasts and her body turned limp.
Pei Jin nibbled Yan Shi Ningâs erect nipples.
âIt hurts...â Yan Shi Ning said.
âShi Ning, does your chest wound hurt?â Pei Jin asked.
Yan Shi Ning blushed and shook her head. âYou bit too hard.â
âShi Ning... later Iâll let you bite me,â Pei Jin said.
