The morning after Bei Dou and Xiao Tuâs wedding.
Bei Dou rolled around from night to dawn and finally he could eat Xiao Tu.
Pei Jin successfully ate Yan Shi Ning.
That morning Yan Shi Ning woke up and saw Pei Jin staring sadly at the ceiling. She knocked her head on his arm. âPei Jin, what are you thinking?â
âIâm thinking itâs been many days and itâs the right time for me to see tenth brother,â Pei Jin said.
âYou should go,â Yan Shi Ning said.
âShi Ning, do you want to accompany me?â Pei Jin asked.
âI can go outside?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
Yan Shi Ning was three months pregnant and her stomach was round. If she walked outside the manor then her pregnancy wouldnât be a secret anymore.
âShi Ning, youâve been locked at home for months,â Pei Jin said. âDonât you want to go outside?â
âI do want to go outside but... I decided I want to continue staying home,â Yan Shi Ning said.
Pei Jin understood Yan Shi Ning didnât want to risk losing their child and he held her hand. âShi Ning, Iâve made you worried.â
âItâs enough that you know,â Yan Shi Ning said. âPei Jin, on the way home remember to buy braised trotters and soft dates at Guo Fu for me.â
Yan Shi Ning licked her lips and felt hungry.
âShi Ning, recently youâve been craving for soft food,â Pei Jin said.
âUm, is something wrong with my cravings?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âElders say if a pregnant woman is carrying a boy then sheâll crave soft food,â Pei Jin said. He rubbed Yan Shi Ningâs stomach. âDo you think our child is a boy?â
Yan Shi Ning kicked Pei Jin, his hands were rubbing past her stomach. âPei Jin, take your hands away.â
Pei Jin kissed Yan Shi Ning, dressed and unwillingly left the chamber. He was happy to eat Yan Shi Ning but he regretted he couldnât eat her as often as he did before she was pregnant.
West of the imperial city there was a busy shop owned by Gentleman Su Ci. He stood at the front of the shop and greeted customers. He grinned after he saw Pei Jin stepped out of a horse carriage.
âNinth prince, what wind brought you here?â Su Ci asked. âSomeone bring the rare tea to ninth prince!â
âGentleman Su Ci, youâre too generous,â Pei Jin praised. âI heard you have a rare jade bracelet at your shop. I came here because Iâm interested in seeing the rare jade bracelet.â
âNinth prince, I understand,â Su Ci said. âPlease come inside. We can drink tea and talk.â
âSorry for troubling Gentleman Su Ci,â Pei Jin said and walked into the shop.
The rich young gentleman customers who were inside the shop gossiped about Pei Jin.
âNinth prince is kind and gentle as rumored,â the first young man said. âA while ago I heard he bought a rare pair of jade bracelets for his wife.â
âYou donât know how much ninth prince dotes on his wife,â the second young man said. âTo ninth prince gold and silver canât compare to a beautyâs smile.â
âWhat about you?â the first young man asked. âArenât you going to buy this ring? Itâs only five hundred silver taels. Are you not buying it because your heart will miss the silver taels?â
âNo, I have selective vision!â the second young man said. âFu Wu, are there other rings similar to this ring?â
Su Ci led Pei Jin into a private room.
âHeavens, Iâm begging ninth prince to take the jade away,â Su Ci said. âYou caused me to lose peaceful sleep by keeping the jade here.â
âYour cheeks look a healthy pink and you look livelier than in the past,â Pei Jin said.
âItâs an act!â Su Ci said.
âShow me the jade,â Pei Jin said.
Su Ci obediently pushed a hidden clay ornament and exposed a secret passageway through a wall.
Pei Jin looked down at the spacious descending stairway. âItâs impressive.â
Su Ci led Pei Jin down the stairs and to a locked door that had light shining through the gaps of the door.
âHeâs inside,â Su Ci said. âIâll be guarding and waiting for you outside.â
âUm, is there anything else?â Pei Jin asked.
âItâs better if you see him yourself,â Su Ci said.
Pei Jin thought it wasnât good news. He watched Su Ci walked upstairs then he unlocked the door.
Inside the room Pei Lamâs hair was messy, his face was pale and he sat gloomily at a table.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âNinth brother,â Pei Lam said.
Pei Jinâs back turned cold to see Pei Lamâs disturbing calmness as though Pei Lam predicted his visit.
Pei Lam stared at the barricaded window. âIâve been asking myself when ninth brother would visit me. I didnât think ninth brother would visit this soon. Is it twelve or thirteen days... ninth brother, look at this place. Itâs hard to see if itâs night or day.â
Pei Jin understood Su Ciâs words, Pei Lam was mumbling to himself.
âHow did you know it was me?â Pei Jin asked.
Pei Lam turned around and looked at Pei Jin. âNinth prince, whatâs scaring you?â
Pei Jin didnât know why Pei Lamâs eyes looked soulless.
âNinth brother, you donât need to be scared,â Pei Lam said. âIâm your captive and I canât do anything to harm you. Ninth brother, look at me. Even if you gave me a sword I still wouldnât be able to do anything.â
Pei Jin looked at Pei Lamâs two missing fingers and he shivered. He didnât expect saying to Bei Dou that he could deal with the empress and Pei Lam would lead to Bei Dou cutting off two of Pei Lamâs fingers and using it to force the empress to kill herself.
âNinth brother, why did you cut off two of my fingers?â Pei Lam asked. âI thought about why for many days. But after I heard the ringing sounds of funeral bells I understood why. Ninth brother, is my imperial mother dead?â
Pei Jin was startled to see Pei Lam calmly treated the empressâ death as something trivial.
âItâs good that sheâs dead,â Pei Lam said. âIâm not the crown prince anymore, she wouldnât have survived much longer in the palace. Imperial mother had lived a tiring life. The sooner she closes her eyes the sooner she can rest. Death is an escape for her.â
Pei Jin couldnât believe it was the Pei Lam he knew in the past. He didnât know how a lively Pei Lam could say such despairing thoughts.
âIs that why you killed Yan Shi Ting?â Pei Jin asked.
âShi Ting...â Pei Lam asked. He vaguely remembered Yan Shi Ting. âI killed her. She lived a life of suffering. Itâs better for her to die.â
Pei Lam looked down at his hands. âI used these two hands to choke her to death and pushed her down the well. Itâs an unforgiveable crime... but it was worth freeing Shi Ting.â
Pei Jin didnât know how he could understand Pei Lamâs eerie indifference.
âNinth brother, do you think Iâm too cruel?â Pei Lam asked. âNinth brother, did you expect Iâm capable of being this cruel?â
Pei Jin didnât want to admit he suspected Pei Lam was possessed by a demon.
âNinth brother, the truth is thereâs no one that isnât cruel,â Pei Lam said.
âWhat are you implying?â Pei Jin asked.
âNinth brother, weâre all cruel,â Pei Lam said. âI killed Yan Shi Ting. But ninth brother, ninth sister and everyone else caused her to become insane. Ninth brother, who do you think is crueller?â
Pei Jin didnât know what to say.
âNinth brother, I only wanted to leave,â Pei Lam said. âI wanted to escape my cage. Ninth brother, why did you detain me?â
âYou truly want to leave?â Pei Jin asked.
âIf I didnât want to leave then why did I request many times to take my crown position away?â Pei Lam asked. âWhy did I fake my own death? Itâs a pity ninth brother ruined everything.â
âYou donât want to be the crown prince?â Pei Jin asked.
âThis imperial city is only dust eating people,â Pei Lam said.
âIf your intention was to leave then why did you need to warn imperial father about me?â Pei Jin asked.
âWarn imperial father...â Pei Lam asked. âIt appears Wang Fu Mu is ninth brotherâs ally.â
Pei Jin was impressed by Pei Lamâs intelligence.
âNinth brother, you win!â Pei Lam said.
âDo you want me to die?â Pei Jin asked.
âNo,â Pei Lam said.
Pei Lam didnât know why he warned their father. Did he wanted to harm Pei Jin? But he thought Pei Jin was more suited to sit on the throne than Pei Zhang. If he decided to let go of his crown position... why did he need to warn their father?
Pei Lam thought about his fatherâs disappointment and hurt. Perhaps he wanted to compensate his fatherâs pain. His father couldnât see through Pei Jin. So if he warned his father about Pei Jin then his father didnât need to be troubled about Pei Jin.
âPei Lam, do you think your life is full of unbearable sufferings?â Pei Jin asked. âDo you think you can only escape if you leave? Do you think everyone close to you suffered too and they can only escape if they die?â
Pei Lam nodded his head.
âPei Lam, why is it that everyone else that suffered can only escape if they die?â Pei Jin asked. âYet you suffered too but donât think you need to die to escape.â
Pei Jin grabbed Pei Lamâs collar, teared Pei Lamâs robes opened and exposed Pei Lamâs chest scar.
âNinth brother, what are you doing?â Pei Lam asked.
âWhy didnât you stab your heart a little deeper?â Pei Jin asked. âIs it because you didnât want to die? Is it because youâre scared of death?â
Pei Jin pushed Pei Lam onto the bed and looked down at Pei Lam.
âPei Lam, do you think youâre clean and innocent?â Pei Jin asked. âThe truth is youâre too dirty! You think youâre righteous. Yet youâre scared of death and too deceitful. If you didnât want to become the emperor then you should have said you didnât want to before you became the crown prince. If you didnât want to marry Yan Shi Ting then you should have kept your distance from her at the start and not give her hope. For your own gains, you used others. Do you think your actions are righteous? Pei Lam, you donât need to act like this, itâs too ugly.â
In Pei Lamâs world, he was the only good and beautiful person inside his world. He thought he didnât care about the grievances of the outside world but he didnât expect the world he built for himself was too weak. Pei Jin only said a few words to him and his world turned to dust. He wasnât good and beautiful as he thought so his world was no longer good and beautiful. He was a bad person so he had built an ugly world.
âPei Lam, youâve only stepped on othersâ hopes and good intentions,â Pei Jin said. âYouâve hurt the people who supported you for what you call freedom and escape. Do you know why your imperial mother died? She wanted you to stay alive so she killed herself. The palace isnât a cage, itâs not dust but you perceived it as a cage to justify your cruel actions in the past.â
Pei Lam fell into a hopeless state.
âIf you think the palace is a scary place then this place doesnât have any scary battles,â Pei Jin said. âYou can be happy on your own here.â
Pei Jin left the room and he didnât look back at the soulless Pei Lam.
Pei Lam awoken from his dark thoughts after he heard the sound of the door lock.
âLet me out!â Pei Lam cried out. âYou donât need to trap me here!â
Pei Lam yelled, kicked and punched the door but there was no reply outside the door.
The silence was killing Pei Lam.
âYou donât need to trap me here... you can kill me but you donât need to trap me here...â Pei Lam mumbled.
