The emperorâs question was a hidden dagger.
Pei Jin didnât know how long the cold wind in his heart stirred.
âImperial father, I promise my heart will not change,â Pei Jin said.
âThatâs good,â the emperor said and left the calligraphy room.
The emperor walked past the kitchen and the past haunted him.
âBig brother, I learned how to grill meat in Southern Jiang...â Prince Chen Nan said.
That one memory ruined his happiness to hear his ninth daughter-in-law was pregnant.
The emperorâs imperial guards and imperial physicians escorted the emperor back to the palace.
Pei Jinâs manor returned to its lively atmosphere.
âYour grandfather!â Xiao Zai cursed. âXiao Hui you purposely threw me over the wall! If I had landed on the emperor then I would have been cut into pieces! If you see me as an eyesore, you can tell me but donât harm me like this. Say something. Donât think Iâll spare you if you donât say anything.â
Xiao Zai chased Xiao Hui around the courtyard.
âThose two people are going to make me laugh to death,â Yan Shi Ning said. She rubbed her stomach and pulled Pei Jinâs sleeve. âPei Jin, whatâs wrong? What did the emperor say to you in the calligraphy room?â
Pei Jin held Yan Shi Ningâs hand. âNothing. Your father-in-law asked me to behave.â
âDid the emperor find out about something?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
Pei Jin shook his head. âPerhaps someone said something to imperial father.â
Suddenly Pei Jinâs guard, Xiao Ting entered the courtyard.
âWhat happened in the palace?â Pei Jin asked.
Xiao Ting reported to Pei Jin about the court officialsâ conflict over who should be the crown prince and left the courtyard.
Yan Shi Ning shivered, she thought Huang Guo would only spread the secret about her pregnancy.
âWhy would Huang Guo want to cause trouble in the palace?â Yan Shi Ning asked
âIt appears Iâll need to visit Huang Guo,â Pei Jin said coldly.
Yan Shi Ning knew Pei Jin wasnât upset about Huang Guo, he was upset about the emperorâs reaction. Pei Jin was also the emperorâs son but the emperorâs warning showed that the emperor never wanted to give Pei Jin the opportunity to inherit the kingdom. She held Pei Jinâs cold hand and thought the old AH was lower than her neglectful and opportunistic father.
Pei Jin patted Yan Shi Ningâs hand. âShi Ning, itâs alright. Iâm used to it. You canât expose your deadly temper.â
âPei Jin...â Yan Shi Ning said.
âUm?â Pei Jin asked.
âPei Jin, why donât we force that old AH who doesnât want you to be his heir... have to open his mouth and beg you to be the crown prince?â Yan Shi Ning asked.
âThen what?â Pei Jin asked.
âThen youâll tell the old AH you donât want to be his heir and let him be angry to death,â Yan Shi Ning said.
Pei Jin hugged Yan Shi Ning. âWife, thatâs a good plan. Do you believe in your husband that much?â
âDonât think that I donât know what youâre thinking,â Yan Shi Ning said.
Pei Jin thought his little lion was more intelligent by the day. He kissed her and travelled to Huang Guoâs manor.
Later at Huang Guoâs manor, Pei Jin and Huang Guo sat opposite each other in Huang Guoâs calligraphy room.
âNinth prince, you must have heard what happened in the palace today,â Huang Guo said.
âElder Guo, what are you alluding to?â Pei Jin asked.
Huang Guo looked at Pei Jinâs cup of tea on the table. âThe tea is prepared and ready for you to drink.â
Pei Jin understood Huang Guoâs motive. âIn this period if I drink tea then I wonât be able to sleep.â
Huang Guo drank his tea and thought Pei Jin was more cunning by the day.
âElder Guo, youâre not young anymore,â Pei Jin said. âItâs not good for Elder Guo to drink too much tea.â
Huang Guoâs back stiffened, he knew Pei Jin was warning him. âNinth prince, what did the emperor say to you at your manor?â
Pei Jin laughed coldly. âImperial father said a few words... Elder Guo wouldnât be pleased if you heard what imperial father said.â
Huang Guo grimaced.
Pei Jin changed into a more comfortable sitting position. âElder Guo, itâs useless for your heart to waste energy.â
Huang Guo couldnât see through Pei Jinâs thoughts. âNinth prince, do you have any grievances? But until the end, no one knows who the winner is and who the loser is. All the emperors in the past snatched the throne from their brothers.â
Huang Guo was a fool to have underestimated Pei Jin as someone who could easily be manipulated. After the harvest festival incident, Pei Jinâs manor was unaffected and Huang Guo realised Pei Jin was more cunning and stronger than he thought. Also, Huang Guo didnât believe the news about the empress killing herself. He knew Pei Jin was involved to avenge his daughterâs death.
Huang Guoâs spies in the palace confirmed his suspicions about the empressâ death. Then he heard news about Yan Shi Ning being ill, he wasnât fooled because he knew Yan Shi Ning was a healthy woman so he sent his daughter-in-laws to Pei Jinâs manor to see if Yan Shi Ning was pregnant. He was happy to hear his daughter-in-laws confirmed Yan Shi Ningâs pregnancy.
After Huang Guo heard rumors about Pei Zhangâs supporters want to recommend Pei Zhang to be the crown prince, he knew it was the right opportunity for him to see the emperor in the palace. Everything had happened according to Huang Guoâs plan until Pei Jin visited him and warned him not to interfere anymore because the emperor had no intentions to let Pei Jin become the crown prince.
Huang Guo didnât lose hope because no emperors were given the throne, the throne was always conquered. But Pei Jinâs indifference to the throne made him feel frustrated and powerless.
âNinth prince, are you weary of me?â Huang Guo asked.
Pei Jin smiled coldly.
âNinth prince, you donât have to be weary of me,â Huang Guo said. âI promise I only want to help raise you to the highest position. All I want in return is that you promise to protect everyone in the Guo Household. Ninth prince, you know if seventh prince becomes crown prince then no one in the Guo Household will survive.â
âNo one can predict imperial fatherâs heart,â Pei Jin said.
âIt doesnât matter if the emperorâs heart only sees one option,â Huang Guo said. âNinth prince, earlier I told you itâs precedent that emperors have always snatched the throne.â
âElder Guo, how do you plan to snatch the throne?â Pei Jin asked.
Huang Guo knew Pei Jin was forcing him to reveal his plan. Of course snatching the throne involved a strong army force. It was true Huang Guo had a secret army force but he wouldnât dare use his army force unless someone related to him like his adoptive grandson secured the crown prince position.
Huang Guo dipped a finger in the cup of tea and wrote his plan on the table.
âNinth prince, what do you think?â Huang Guo asked.
Pei Jin nodded his head. âItâs good.â
âNinth prince, what do you plan to do?â Huang Guo asked.
âMe?â Pei Jin asked. âElder Guo, I think I still prefer to be a carefree prince.â
Huang Guo was too angry to speak.
Pei Jin looked innocently at Huang Guo. âElder Guo, your decision to use a chess piece at this time isnât wrong. Itâs a pity you used the wrong chess piece.â
âYou!â Huang Guo said.
âElder Guo donât be angry,â Pei Jin said. âBesides, Elder Guo is used to my way of speaking. It isnât easy to drink tea here. Elder Guo, Iâll leave first.â
After Pei Jin left, Huang Guoâs third son Fan appeared from behind a screen.
âFather, Pei Jin is despicable!â Fan said. âFather, you lowered yourself in front of him but he didnât take the bait. I donât believe he has no desire to be emperor.â
Huang Guo grinded his teeth. âHe only doesnât like being controlled. Third son, wait and see. Iâm certain heâll make a move.â
âFather, what should we do now?â Fan asked.
âWait,â Huang Guo said.
âWait?â Fan asked.
âWait for him to eliminate Pei Zhang,â Huang Guo said. âAfter the throne is his then weâll make our move.â
Inside the horse carriage, Pei Jin looked up at the moon and smiled. He didnât expect Huang Guo had a secret army. But he knew apart from him, Huang Guo didnât have anyone else to cooperate with Huang Guo. So there was no reason for him to allow Huang Guo to use him.
