Chapter 2 of 16

Catch Me If You Can

Y/N's woken up suddenly by banging on her cabin door. She rolls over and checks her watch which reads around 5 in the morning. She groans and gets out of bed, throwing on a jacket to cover herself, and to shelter her from the morning cold as she makes her way to the front door. She opens it to be met with the smiling and bright faces of Bucky and Curt.

"Somebody better be dying", she says, her voice being a little raspy from dehydration. Her slight hangover from the night prior was the one to blame this time.

"Hey, you told me to wake you up whenever we have a mission", John raises his hands in defense.

"And I'm starting to regret that decision because its 5 in the Morning John", she yawns, rubbing her eyes to help them open.

"We're leaving in 30 and I know you like to say bye to the guys before they take off so..."

"Right, yeah, of course", She nods and looks at Curt with a smile when their eyes meet. "Good morning, Curt."

"Morning Angel", he smiles back as he leans against the doorframe.

"No good morning for me?", Bucky complains with a tilt of his head, pressing his tongue to the inside of his cheek.

"I'll be out in 15", she says before closing the door on him, dismissing the question and walking over to her dresser. She hears the laugh of Curt directed towards Bucky, with the muffed sound of him teasing his friend while she grabs the uniform she folded neatly the night before. She gets changed and goes to the bathroom, brushing her hair and teeth to make herself look presentable. She makes her way out of her cabin and heads to the main base on foot. She's greeted by the friendly and smiling faces of the squad while she makes her way through the building and to the airstrip.

"Hey, Y/N", She's stopped by a voice with a tinge of nervousness. She turns around to see who it was and smiles.

"Oh, hey Crosby", She looks over his outfit noticing that he was dressed up in his gear. "Are you flying today?"

"Yeah..."

"Hey, you'll do great. They wouldn't put you up there if you weren't good." She says comfortingly. "Plus, if you're taking bubbles spot then you're bound to be a great navigator", she hits his hat down over his face. "Have fun Cros. I'd say good luck, but you don't need it."

He laughs lowly and fixes his hat nodding slightly, "Thank you. I'll see you after."

That's when she hears the sound of a jeep horn honking behind her with the holler of a voice she's heard one too many times. She shakes her head and rolls her eyes with a smile. She turns around to face none other than Bucky and Buck, arms hanging out over the nonexistent windows of the doors.

"Need a ride sweetheart?" John calls out with his signature smirk. He's wearing his pilot attire with his sunglasses tilted down slightly over his nose with his head cocked to the side.

Could he get any more good looking? Every damn day too.

My god

She closes one of her eyes to block the glare from the sun that was casting over her face, shining into her eyes. "For the jeep or the pilot driving?", she calls back.

His jaw flexes as he interprets her words nodding his head and swiping his tongue across his lower lip. "Is that a yes?"

She chuckles and walks over to the vehicle, climbing over the door and siting behind the pair of boys and turns towards Crosby. "I'll see you when you get back!", she waves to him and blows him a kiss before Bucky steps on the gas and drives down the airstrip. The wind is hitting her face making her hair blows in all directions. So much for brushing it. She leans her head back against the seat enjoying the view of the sky and the smell of fuel she's become so accustomed to. They pull up to Buck's plane and he hops out, grabbing his bag. She looks up at him and smiles. "Make sure to come back in good condition or Marge will kill me."

He smiles back and nods, "I'll try my best."

"I'll see you when you get back alright?" Bucky says more so as a statement.

"When I get back", Buck replies, patting his shoulder and walks away towards to cockpit.

"Are you flying today Major?", Y/N asks Bucky, leaning forward in between the two front seats, resting her arms on the backs of the chairs.

He looks at her through the mirror before turning his head around to face the girl in the backseat. "Nah, not today. So, are you gonna sit in the front where I can see your beautiful face, or do I need to take my eyes off the road for that?"

"Sir, yes Sir", she salutes before climbing her way to the front seat where Buck was originally sitting. "Better?", she asks, adjusting herself to be more comfortable.

"Much better", he says before shifting the gear of the jeep and driving off. "Well then what are we gonna do today?"

Y/N quirks her eyebrows and turns her head to face the man beside her. "We?"

"Ouch", he laughs. "The one time I want to hang out with my favourite girl at the base", he sighs mockingly.

"Well, the captain wants me to work on some papers he has backed up, and I have to check on some patients in the infirmary, but I should be done before the boys get back", she explains, racking her brain on what was set up for her to do today.

"Do you want to go to the lake after?", he suggests.

There was a spot near the trees, past the track where a lake had been hidden. Of course, almost everyone knows that it's there, and it is a very popular spot during the summertime. It's an easy way to cool off and go for a break. Yet, normally when missions were in progress, next to no one would be there.

"Sounds like a plan", she smiles.

They get in line with the other jeeps that were getting ready to speed off with the planes once they begin to lift off. The moment the aircrafts began moving every driver presses on the gas, racing down the airstrip. Y/N stands up careful not to fly out of the car and waves goodbye with both her hands above her head. Bucky grabs onto one of the beltloops on her pants for extra support and smiles at the amount of excitement and energy she can always have, no matter the situation. That was one of the many things he loves about her. Once the planes were off in the air she sits back down, to which Bucky removes his hand off her pants. He turns the jeep around and heads off to base, dropping her off at the official's office.

"So, I'll see you after?"

"Yes, you will", she smiles at him and hops out heading to the doors. "Thanks for the ride, Major!", she calls out before disappearing behind the double doors.

Later

Y/N was currently sat on the edge of the infirmary bed with a clipboard in hand. She was jotting down notes, questioning and talking with Bubbles who had gotten hurt earlier that week during a mission. She had finished her work over at the office and headed to the infirmary to check up on everyone as she always wanted to make sure everyone had what they needed. She hears the doors open, followed by heavy footsteps and sees Bucky approaching her and Bubbles.

"Hey, Bubbles how you holdin' up?", Bucky asks standing behind the girl and placing his hands on her shoulders.

"As good as I can be. I can't wait to get out of this stiff bed though", he groans trying to make himself comfortable.

"Yeah, well you'll be back in the air in no time.", Bucky looks down at Y/N and pats her shoulders. "Ready to go?"

She nods and stands up. "I'll be back later tonight to check in. Get some rest in the meantime", she offers him a smile and hangs up the clip board with his information on the wall next to his bed.

"Okay, thanks Y/N", he mumbles, the pain killers she had given him earlier already taking effect.

Bucky and Y/N make their way to the lake talking and laughing. Since the day she met him, he has always had the ability to make her smile. Some could say it's his natural charm, but there was something more to him. Not just a man who hooked up with every girl he laid eyes on, but an actual man. That's what she liked about him. Not to say she didn't like everyone else at base as she truly does love them all, but Bucky and her clicked in a way that no one can explain. She cherishes their friendship dearly as does he.

"Are you going to swim?", he asks, stopping in his tracks and kneels down to unlace his shoes.

She laughs lightly, "Are you kidding? There's no way."

"Awe come on, why not?", he pursues, standing back up.

She looks at him, with an expression reading 'are you being serious'. "Bucky the lake is freezing. It might be summer, but that lake is as cold as it is in the winter"

"Suit yourself", he shrugs removing his jacket and throwing it on the ground. He peeled his shirt off muscles tensing and flexing over the movement as the compressed uniform sets his upper body free. He turns around and starts walking towards the lake.

Y/N couldn't help but let her eyes roam over the defined muscles that sculpt his back. The movement of him swaying his arms while he walked allowed them to show all different angles of his body that her mother would be ashamed of her daughter to be internally drooling over. She didn't approve of her moving away in the first place, let alone be surrounded by hundreds of men, but hey, Y/N was not complaining one bit.

She exhales a shaky breath before snapping herself out of her daze and pipes up, "You know you're still wearing army pants right?"

He turns to face the girl, waist deep in the water and smirks. "Are you saying I should take off all my clothes Y/N?"

"That is definitely not what I said, but I wouldn't complain", his smirk widens so she decides to add onto her comment. "I also wouldn't complain if they weighed you down so you drowned."

He chuckles, "And here I thought you were flattering me". Moving further into the water, he dives under the surface, submerging himself into the cool water of the lake. She sits down and grabs his hat, putting it on her head and leans her back against a tree.

"It looks good on you."

She moves her attention back to the water to see Bucky who has resurfaced, wiping his face and rubbing his hands through his hair. "What does?"

"My hat."

"Maybe I should become a pilot then", she says sarcastically.

He makes his way out of the water as it clings and flows down his chest. Did she mention how he was ripped? Who is she kidding, anyone could guess that by looking at how his arms strain against his uniform. She can't be the only one that finds pilots attractive. Right?

"You're starring."

Crap. "What?"

"Want a hug?"

That is not even close to what he said.

"Why?"

He outstretches his arms, a playful grin tugging at his lips. Oh...

"No, I think I'm okay..."

"C'mon", he walks closer which was her cue to stand up and back away.

"Bucky..."

"Y/N"

He then starts walking faster, so she turns around and sprints away from him to which he repeated her movements, not being far behind her.

"John Egan get away from me!", she yells while laughing. "You're soaked."

She could hear him laughing behind her at her desperate attempts to get away from him. I mean who are you kidding, what were the actual chances of out running him? That's when she felt one arm wrap around her waist, followed by another, keeping her in place. She squeals in surprise as he hugs her from behind and lifts her up, the ice-cold water now seeping through her clothes as well.

"Bucky, put me down!", she yells again though still laughing as she knew she wouldn't be taken seriously. She takes his hat off her head and hits his arm with it.

"Okay, okay, no need to resort to violence", he says putting her down with a large smile.

She turns to face him and wipes her arms on her shirt, trying to dry them off. "I'm all wet now. There was a reason I didn't want to go in the lake."

She looks up at him and he's just smiling clearly finding humor in her words. She laughs shortly in disbelief and throws his hat at him. "God, get your mind out of the gutter Major."

He catches the hat and just nods turning away. His grin still evident on his face as he turns away to go fetch his discarded clothes.
