Charles did not say anything.
âDo you really think the threats of your aunts and the others will work on me?â Master Harris looked at him with daggers in his eyes.
Charles lowered his head to stare at his toes. âYou should know better than I do.â
Master Harris sneered coldly. âTell me, if I use the 21% shares in my hands as collateral and tell your aunts and Uncle Oscar that Iâll change the will, do you think they will still threaten me?â
There was a stunned look on Charles' eyes, but it was just a matter of seconds before he recovered himself. âThey probably wonât.â
âGet out there and kneel! Donât get up without my permission!â Master Harris was in a rage.
Charles replied and proceeded to head out the door to kneel. Ken followed behind, monitoring him from the side.
A few Harris family members walked out upon hearing the commotion. They came up to console him quietly out of politeness and left.
The floor of the hallway was cool, and Charlesâ legs had gone numb after kneeling for two hours. He could not feel a thing.
âMr. Harris, youâre doing this for Miss White, arenât you? Itâs only a woman. Is she worth doing this?â Ken asked.
Charles pinched his icy-cold legs. âIf itâs not worth it, then tell me, Ken, why go to prison over a woman?â
âIt was a time of youth and vigor,â Ken said simply without explaining much.
There were not many people at night, but there were still families of patients as well as doctors and nurses on duty. They looked curiously at Charles who was kneeling outside the ward.
When dawn was about to break, Ken glanced at Charlesâ ghastly pale face and walked into the ward. He came out not long after.
âMaster Harris says you can get up now,â Ken said.
Charles smiled. âThank you, Ken.â
He tried to balance himself with both palms on the ground while getting up, but his legs were fully numb from kneeling too long. He staggered for a moment, almost falling to the ground. He only managed to stand on his feet with Kenâs help.
âDo you want to get a ward to rest in or return to Bamboo Virtues Village?â Ken asked.
Charles stabled himself with a hand against the wall while the other hand massaged his numbed legs. âBamboo Virtues Village.â
He returned to Bamboo Virtues Village with Ken after his legs felt better.
The moment they got off the car, Charles bumped into Leah who was walking slowly while holding onto her wheelchair.
âIâll take my leave first, Mr. Harris.â Ken greeted Leah and left without even bothering to get out of the car.
Leah stopped walking with an astonished look on her face. âCharles, what are you doing here?â
âI have a place here,â Charles replied.
Leahâs hands held onto the back of her wheelchair. She eyed Charles up and down. She bit her lip and said, âWhy do you have so many wounds on you? Is it because you made Grandpa Harris mad over Sophia?â
Charles looked coolly at her. âI fell by accident. Iâm a little tired. Iâm heading back to rest.â
With that, he turned to leave.
Leah called out to him from behind, âCharles, can I have a minute? I have something to say to you.â
Charles stopped in his tracks and turned back to face her.
âI heard Sophiaâs leg is healing well?â Leah said with a complicated expression.
Charles smiled slightly. âYes. Sheâs doing better than you. Dr. Hemingway says that she can resume dancing after a while.â
Leah gripped the wheelchair tightly when she heard this. Her knuckles were slightly white now. She forced out a smile. âIs that really so?â
Charles replied, âYup. Iâm planning to send her back to school to train after some time. She can probably perform on stage after a year or so. If youâre interested, I can get her to send you tickets.â
Leah laughed bitterly. âItâs okay. Ever since I broke my leg, Iâve never watched another dance performance.â
Charlesâ eyebrow raised slightly. âIs that so? Itâs different with Sophia. She has been watching dance videos every day and training all this while. She even informed me yesterday that she could return to the stage immediately once her legs are better. Sheâs really confident with herself.â
Leah lowered her eyes, a dark and gloomy look flashing in her gaze. However, she went back to her normal self when she lifted her head again.
Her fingers pointed to the villa in front of her. âIs Sophia living here too?â
âYup, itâs our matrimonial home.â Charles purposely emphasized the words âmatrimonial homeâ. One would wonder if he was doing it on purpose.
Leah bit her lip and sighed as she said, âActually, I donât really want to press charges against Sophia. As long as you stop treating her legs and get her to apologize to me, I can forget about everything she has done to me.â
âYou donât need to trouble yourself over this. Sophia loves dancing so much, and my heart aches for her when I see her sad over being unable to dance,â said Charles.
Leahâs expression stiffened as she asked gently, âYou have such a close relationship with Sophia, so do you really want to stand by and watch her go to prison?â
âWho says that she will definitely go to prison just because youâre pressing charges?â There was a look of slight astonishment on Charlesâ face.
â!â This sentence was like a bolt of lightning to Leah. Her mind was struck blank, and an unsettling feeling started to appear in her heart.
However, she quickly repressed that feeling. âAttempted murder. Sophia will definitely go to prison for that. I personally think that a leg is nothing compared to her entire future.â
âWhat if this attempted murder never existed in the first place?â Charles looked at her coolly.
Leah stared at him for a while. She was not entirely sure if he truly had evidence in his hands or if he was just lying to her. However, she gave the car accident two years ago some thought. She was confident there were no loopholes in that incident. He was definitely lying to her.
She sighed softly, a bitter look crossing her expression. âDid Sophia tell you that accident wasnât her doing? And you believe her just like that? That recording during the car accident is still in my hands. Iâve got solid evidence and thatâs the iron truth.â
The last sentence seemed to be hinting at something.
âShouldnât you already know what I believe in since two years ago?â Charles looked coldly at her.
Leah stared at him for a moment and shook her head, laughing bitterly. âSince you donât care about Sophia going to prison, thereâs nothing much for me to say.â
Charles said nothing.
âI have treated Sophia as a friend and never wanted to press charges against her, but the things she has done...â Leahâs eyes turned slightly red.

She wiped the corner of her eyes and said, âIâm sorry, Charles. I canât take this any longer.â
Charles smiled. âWhat a coincidence. Me too.â
Leah was slightly taken aback. âWhat do you mean by this, Charles?â
Charles turned back to walk toward the villa. He said while walking, âIt means whatever I just said. Be careful during your walk. Donât hurt your leg.â
Leah watched him leave as a gentle look appeared in her eyes. Her voice was softer than usual, âThank you for your concern, Charles. Iâll make sure to take good care of myself.â
Charles stopped and turned back. He looked at her with a hand in his pocket. âDonât misunderstand me. The summons from the court will be arriving soon. I donât want your lawyer going to the judge and complaining about how much your leg hurts.â
With that, he smiled at Leah and opened the door to return to his home.
