Chapter 250 of 493

Chapter 253

“Ms. Jones lost the use of her legs in the accident because of her, right? So how did the injury happen?”

“Apparently, rumors have it that Mr. Harris used to like Ms. Jones, so after finding out that she injured Ms. Jones’ legs, he hired people to break her legs. Who could have expected her to get together with Mr. Harris after being released from prison!”

“I can never understand rich people! Though, one thing I’m certain of is that if someone breaks my legs, I will never get together with that person no matter what.”

As Sophia walked across the aisle, she heard two of the jurors whispering about her. She bit her lip and quickened her steps.

Soon, the court was called to order.

When it was Leah’s turn to speak, she bowed to everyone before starting her speech in a soft, gentle voice. “When the car accident happened two years ago, Sophia and I had already been friends for about seven or eight years.”

“Sophia had always had a bit of a temper and she can be quite insensitive toward others at times, that’s why she doesn’t have a lot of friends, but I think that’s what makes her honest, and a little adorable...”

Leah proceeded to talk about her past with Sophia, her tone laced with nostalgia and sorrow.

Sophia watched as Leah continued with her performance. If it was not for the inappropriate occasion, she would have given her a standing ovation!

How had she not noticed Leah’s talent in acting before this?!

“But on the 28th of September, two years ago, which was also the night of Sophia’s birthday, she had her birthday party as usual. I didn’t think too much about it since it was normal, and so I prepared her a gift and headed to her home.”

“I gave her a call before the party started asking her where she was and she said she had already arrived, then she asked me to meet her.”

Leah paused as she turned her gaze toward Sophia, her eyes filled with bitterness and confusion. “But when I got outside, Sophia was in the car speeding in my direction. I screamed for her to stop but she only stepped on the pedal while, all the while shouting, asking me to die!”

Her voice choked with emotion as she continued, “Actually, on the 27th of September, Sophia and I went out to chat in the afternoon. She asked me if Charles... if Mr. Harris likes me, and I said I wasn’t sure.”

“Then she got upset and lost her temper with me... We were in school at that time so a few classmates who passed by then can prove that we quarreled.”

“I thought Sophia was the same as usual, that it was just a small argument between the two of us, so I didn’t think too much about it. I attended her birthday party as I said I would, and I even prepared a set of earphones that I knew she would like as her gift, but then...”

Leah bit her lip as tears welled at the edge of her eyes. She raised her head slightly and forced the tears back.

At the sight of this, the courtroom instantly broke into a clamor as everyone whispered to each other under their breaths.

“Two years ago, Sophia was only eighteen, yet she was already capable of murder... If she continues to live within society, who knows if she’ll kill again over a small dispute?”

“A person like her should be jailed for the rest of her life!”

“I pity Ms. Jones so much! It’s so sad that she befriended someone who could harbor such evil thoughts, and now she’s disabled too...”

“Look at Sophia, she doesn’t even look remorseful!”

It was the same old talk and comments but phrased differently.

Sophia had heard the same harsh comments so many times she was already long numbed to it. Her face did not even flinch as she took all the hateful comments in. Charles turned to her, his amber eyes flickered with the anger and disgust she saw so often, but also mixed with a look of helplessness and love.

Sophia glanced at him before moving her gaze away as if she had not seen him looking at her.

The judge asked Sophia, “Does the defendant have anything to say?”

Sophia stood up. “On the afternoon of the 27th of September, Leah and I did meet up to talk. However, she told me that she could no longer hide her feelings for Charles and asked if I could cancel my wedding with Charles so that we could have a fair fight.”

“Sophia, why are you...” The look on Leah’s face was incredulous. She gave a wry smile and heaved a heavy sigh. “Forget it, there’s no point for us to argue about this in court.”

She lowered her eyes, and her voice was light as she said, “I just can’t believe that the two of us used to be friends.”

There was no evidence and the two of them stuck to their own versions of the story. However, the public had always sided with Leah all along. After all, nobody could deny the fact that Sophia was the one driving the car that crashed into Leah, so most of them thought that Sophia was lying.

Sophia did not bother to explain herself either as she sat down.

Beep!

Beep!

Sophia’s phone vibrated. It was a message notification from Clara.

I Am Heaven and Earth, I Am Your Death: [D*mn, Leah has no shame at all! (angry) (angry) (angry)]

I Am Heaven and Earth, I Am Your Death: [If it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve seen the evidence that Zachary has, I would’ve believed her! And those sitting down there believing everything Leah says, just wait and see!! (knife)]

Sophia put her phone away and turned to look at Clara, who made a fist pump enthusiastically, seemingly making a gesture to cheer her on.

Sophia nodded in acknowledgment, and just as she was about to turn back, she noticed the d*rn figure.

Jenny was staring back at her with her red, swollen eyes, her face filled with anxiety and worry. Jenny pointed to her phone as if asking Sophia to check her phone.

Sophia paused to gaze on her for a second, but quickly turned away. Her phone buzzed several times as it vibrated, and so she took it out to turn it to silent. Then, without giving it another glance, she placed it aside.

She did not need to look at the message to know that her mother was trying to convince her to make good with Leah.

“I would like to ask Ms. Jones a question,” Zachary said, “Seeing how everything happened so quickly, I understand that the situation was quite frantic. Are you sure that you heard Sophia yelling at you that she wanted to kill you? Is it possible that perhaps the wind was very strong that night and you misheard it instead?”

Leah shook her head and bit her lip. “No, it wasn’t windy that night, I’m sure I heard it very clearly. In fact, I have a recording on hand.”

“A recording?” Zachary adjusted his glasses as he smiled in amusement. “Ms. Jones, how did you manage to record an audio recording under such frantic circumstances?”

He paused for a second before continuing, “Or is it possible that you already knew that Ms. White was going to hit you before the incident?”

Hearing this, commotion rose in the courtroom once again.

Leah smiled bitterly as she replied, “Mr. Johnson, I know that you’re defending Sophia but there’s really no need for you to make such malicious assumptions about me.”

Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!

Chapter 252 I Need To Talk To Sophia “When I went out to get Sophia that night, I was on the phone with Elaine. I always had the habit of recording my calls to avoid unexpected trouble, so coincidentally, I recorded everything Sophia said that night. If it’s necessary, I can call Elaine over right away.”

Zachary chuckled with a smile. “Oh, that’s not necessary.”

Then, he turned to the judge and said, “Unfortunately, I have a few pieces of evidence here to prove that Ms. Jones is lying.”

With that, he stepped forward to pass the items to the judge. Since one of the pieces of evidence was a video recording, he handed over his laptop.

Leah’s heart instantly lept, but certain that she had not left any remaining evidence that could possibly lead to her, she calmed herself down and regained her composure.

Zachary returned to his table before speaking once again, “Before this, Ms. Jones, Ms. White, Ms. Young, and Ms. Adams were all friends. I just so happened to come across one of Ms. Adams’s WeChat Moments where I found a video of a program rehearsal, and in the video, Sophia seemed to have said something along the lines of killing Ms. Jones.”
