The intern shook her head embarrassedly, but still stole glances at Sophia from time to time. In the end, she could not hold back her curiosity and asked, âIs Ms. Jones really the mistress? Did she really spend three years planning her scheme since she was fifteen years old?â
Click.
Right then, the office door opened.
âHave I never told you not to ask a patient about his or her private matters?â Victor walked into the room, the usual warmth in his face replaced with a cold look.
The internâs face instantly paled as she stood up shakily. âDoctor... Doctor Hemingway.â
âTell your course instructor to arrange a new mentor for you, you can go now,â Victor said as he left the door open.
The internâs face went red as she said, âDr. Hemingway, I guarantee you this wonât happen again. Please give me another chance!â
Then, she turned to Sophia with an embarrassed look. âMs. White, I was just curious, I really didnât mean anything. Would you accept my apology?â
âDo you want to leave the room now or should I fail you in your internship report?â Dr. Hemingway asked.
The intern wiped away the tears that brimmed her eyes and bowed to Victor. âIâm sorry, Dr. Hemingway, Iâll go now...â
She peeked at Victor one last time but seeing that he had not changed his mind, she left sulkily.
âI had an emergency patient just now, sorry to keep you waiting.â Dr. Hemingway filled a disposable paper cup with water and handed it to Sophia, then raised his own glass of water and took a few gulps.
âItâs alright, I just got here,â Sophia replied.
âDo you think I was too harsh just now?â Victor asked as he put his glass down.
âIâm sure you have your own reasons.â
Victor smiled and continued, âA doctor doesnât just need skills, but medical ethics as well. That wasnât her first time anyway.â
âI see.â Sophia had never liked talking about other people. âAre we doing the check-up later?â
âNo, we can begin now,â Victor said.
He crouched down and began his examination. Surprised at what he discovered, he re-examined again, only to get the same results. âYour leg is recovering better than I have expected. Judging from its current state of recovery, we just need a minor procedure to correct the bone position. With a few more acupuncture sessions, youâll be as good as new!â
â... Dr. Hemingway, by as good as new, do you mean that my leg will fully recover and Iâll regain full mobility like a normal person?â Sophia was stunned at first but tried to cover up the surprise in her voice.
Victor stood up as he picked up his equipment. He flashed her a smile and nodded. âThatâs right. Congratulations, Ms. White!â
Sophiaâs mouth slowly curled up as a huge grin broke across her face and happiness filled her eyes.
She could recover....
Her leg could recover!
She would be able to dance soon!!
âFirst, you won your court case, and now you receive such good news. Ms. White, good things really do come in pairs!â Victor glanced at his watch before he continued with a grin, âItâs noontime now. My mother and my great aunt prepared a meal to celebrate for you, would you do us the honor and stop by for lunch?â
With all her might, Sophia forced herself to stop grinning and nodded.
She bought some fruits and picked up two bottles of wine, then set off to the Hemingwayâs together with Victor.
âIsnât this the young lady from last time? Vic, you have the nerve to lie to us that sheâs not your girlfriend!â The residents in his community were as welcoming as usual.
Victor smiled and replied, âOf all people, I can never lie to you! Think about it, if sheâs my girlfriend, knowing how my great aunt is, do you think itâs possible that the entire community wouldnât know? Who knows, there might even be rumors that I have a child coming along!â
âYouâre not wrong,â the friendly bunch chuckled. âThe young lady looks rather charming, you should seize your opportunity!â
Victor merely snickered in response and said nothing more.
Sophia kept her head low the entire time staring at everyoneâs feet thinking that she could resume her life as a normal person after a short period of time. At that thought, the edge of her mouth curled up once again.
It was not until her cheeks were starting to ache before she had no choice but to stop smiling.
Ding!
The elevator arrived and the two got off together.
When they got to Victorâs doorstep, he turned to Sophia and said, âMs. White, just stay here for a while and donât move.â Then, he handed over the basket of fruits and red wine to her.
Sophia raised her brow in a questioning manner, but still nodded and stopped where she was.
Victor walked outside the door and turned to check on her. When he confirmed that she was not visible, he knocked on the door.
âIâm coming, Iâm coming! That must be Vic and Soph!â Aunt Lucyâs voice could be heard through the door and soon enough, the door clicked open.
The door was only opened to a slight gap big enough for Aunt Lucy to poke her head out. She looked around and asked anxiously, âWhereâs Soph?
Didnât I tell you that I prepared food for her and that you have to bring her over after sheâs done with her check-up?â
âPlease donât be angry, my queen, but I may have forgotten...â Victor said hesitantly.
Slap!
Aunt Lucy immediately slapped him. âYou stupid boy! I called you so many times and even texted you a couple of times! Do you remember what you promised me?â
âWhat am I supposed to do now that I forgot?â Victor frowned as he pulled out his phone. âIâll call Ms. White now then. It shouldnât take too long for her to get here.â
Aunt Lucy had her arms on her hips as she responded angrily, âIf you call her, all the dishes will be cold by the time Soph gets here!â
Footsteps neared the door and Madam Hemingwayâs head appeared above Aunt Lucyâs. Just like Aunt Lucy had done before, she checked the surroundings and asked in shock, âDid you really forget to bring her back?â
Victor nodded, but before he could even speak, Madam Hemingway slammed the door shut.
âIf you canât even do such a simple task, whatâs the use of keeping you around? No wonder you have been single for so many years and you never brought any girls back home! Youâre only allowed in when Soph gets here!â
Right then, Sophia came over and whispered to Victor, âShould you tell your mother and Aunt Lucy that Iâm already here?â
âDonât worry, just leave the things on the floor first, theyâre quite heavy.â Victor took what she was holding and placed them on the floor.

Then, he knocked on the door once again, his tone gently and slightly dejected when he spoke, âMother, Aunty, come on! I had several surgeries this morning and Iâm very hungry now, just let me in to eat! Iâll get Ms. White to come over some other day, is that okay?â
Sophia, â...â
She never would have expected Dr. Hemingway to be such a dramatic actor.
Though, then again, she did not understand why he had to make such a big deal out of this.
âIf you canât even handle such a small task, whatâs the point of feeding you? Just go out and buy something to eat, Iâm sure you wonât starve to death.â Madam Hemingwayâs voice came from inside.
It was quickly followed by Aunt Lucyâs angry voice. âThese are for Soph, not you!â
âSee?â Victor turned to Sophia and said gently, âThereâs always someone watching over you silently. Stop being so pessimistic, itâs not good for your health.â
Sophiaâs mouth opened slightly in surprise.
Did he act out all that just to tell her that she was not unloved?
