Sophiaâs stomach felt even worse now, so she did not turn down his offer. She accepted the bowl of porridge and began eating it.
After finishing half of it, her stomach felt much better. Right then, Charles finally arrived. The second he got out of his car, his eyes went to the bowl of porridge in Sophiaâs hands, then her slightly improved but still incredibly pale face. He instinctively reached for her stomach and rubbed it gently.
âWhy are you eating your dinner so late when you know you get gastritis?â Charles asked in an upset tone.
Thomas stood aside with his meal as he observed Charles quietly. Not only did this man have an envy-worthy family background, but his exceptional looks and capabilities made it even harder for one not to be jealous of him...
It was only natural for one to be jealous of someone who was slightly better than oneself, but when the difference between the two was so distinct and far apart, one could not help but hold a certain admiration and respect for the person.
The man standing before him might be nearly ten years younger, but after hearing about stories of his achievements, Thomas could not help but idolize him.
Now that he had come face to face with his idol and sensed the oppressive aura exuded by his idol, he felt a rush of excitement. His heart throbbed with joy but at the same time, he felt a sense of fear and inferiority.
âI forgot.â Sophia pushed his hand away and turned to Thomas. âAlright, Iâm leaving now. See you tomorrow, Thomas.â
Charles pursed his lips as he turned to Thomas with an almost falcon-like stare when he heard Sophiaâs friendly comment.
Thomas had originally thought the oppressive aura that Charles gave off was overwhelming enough but now that Charles was glaring at him, he finally understood how much pressure a high-ranked superior could exertâespecially one who had been on top of the food chain for a very long while now.
Thomas returned a stiff awkward smile. âSee... See you... Tomorrow.â
âOkay.â With that, Sophia opened the front car door and got in the passenger seat before fastening her seat belt.
She used to think that wearing a seat belt was a hassle, so she never had the habit of it. However, whenever she did not do it, Charles would do it for her.
The close proximity of the action felt too intimate, and it made her feel uncomfortable.
Charles kept his gaze on Thomas for a little longer before turning away. He walked around the car and got into his seat.
The car started and soon joined the fleet of cars on the road. Thomas reached out and wiped away the cold sweat beading across his forehead. He felt instant relief as if something heavy had been lifted off his chest.
In the past, he always thought that it was an exaggeration to say that someone had an oppressing aura, but after today, he had to admit that he was wrong. It was no exaggeration at all. He just never met someone like Mr. Harris.
âI agreed for you to start work, but if you donât even know how to take care of yourself, you can stop.â The only light in the car was from the occasional street lamps outside that shone through the window. Under the dim light, Sophia could vaguely make out the dark expression on Charlesâ face.
Sophia clenched her fists and said, âIâm your girlfriend, not your possession!â
âWhatâs the difference?â Charles said coolly as he turned to cast her a look as sharp as a knife.
Sophia stared back as she forced down all the surging emotions. âIâm also human, Charles Harris. I hope you can learn how to respect my decisions and not just make them for me without even consulting me.â
âI can respect your decisions, but you have to at least take care of your body.â Charles stepped on the pedal, driving slightly faster than usual.
Sophia glared at him as she raised her voice, âI know my own body better than you!â
Charles continued as if he had not heard her at all. âFrom now on, you can have breakfast with me in the morning before going to work. Iâll come and pick you up for lunch, and we can have dinner together after work.â
âCharles Harris!â Sophia all but spat the words out.
Screech!
Charles suddenly slammed the breaks and the car made a high-pitched screeching sound as the tires rubbed on the surface of the road.
Fortunately, the cars behind the Bentley had been driving from afar as the drivers were afraid of accidentally bumping into the expensive car.
Otherwise, they would have hit the Bentley when it stopped all of a sudden.
âSophia, have I spoiled you so badly that youâve already forgotten whatâs your name?â Charles leaned forward and grabbed her harshly by the jaw, forcing her to look at him.
Pain shot up from her jaw, and her eyes teared up involuntarily. She bit her lip and looked at him as sweat beaded her forehead from the pain and terror.
âDonât push my limits.â The bitterness interlaced in Charlesâ voice was so cold that Sophia almost shuddered.
âPush your limits?â Sophia snorted. She was not sure whether she was more disappointed or furious. âCharles Harris, you always talk about how much you like me but have you ever given me the slightest bit of respect as your partner?â
At the end of the day, he just saw her as a pet that he adored. He never saw her as an equal! He could decide everything that she did, but if she did something that he disapproved of, he would get angry and lose his temper!
Was this love?!
No!
He was merely holding her captive!
âWhat respect do you want? Does that mean I should have told you when Leah threatened me so we could discuss whether I should break your leg?â
Charles retorted.
Sophia stared straight into his eyes blankly. Her vision went blurry as she felt tears brimming the edge of her eyes, but she forced herself to hold them back.
She shoved his hand away. âI get it, I donât have the ability to fight back against you and Leah. It was pointless to tell me, so between sending me to prison and breaking my leg, you chose to break my leg!â Sophia continued, her voice filled with sarcasm and anger.
Charles frowned but kept quiet.
âIâm the useless one here. I made my own bed, so I have to lie in it,â Sophia continued, âYouâre right, I really have become haughty because youâve spoiled me so much to the point that Iâve forgotten my own name and everything I went through in the past.â
Charles felt his Adamâs apple bob. He reached out, intending to caress the bruise he had left on her chin. However, she swiftly dodged his hand.
âI overreacted just now, Iâm sorry,â Charles said.
Sophia looked down at her lap as her lips twitched. âWhat are you apologizing for? I should be thanking you.â
She had always thought that both of them were not equal in this relationship and that if Charles ever misunderstood her, was angry at her, or perhaps had a change of feelings, she would not be able to fight back. He had just proved all her worries and doubts to be true.
The drive continued in silence.
After returning to the White family house, Sophia had some soup. Amidst Jamesâ nagging, she grabbed her purse and headed upstairs.
Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!
ï¤Chapter 307 Youâre Old And Deaf Concerned, Jenny wanted to go after her but was immediately stopped by Nicole. âYou should eat. Iâm almost done now, Iâll go up and check on her.â
Sophia settled herself in her room. As soon as she took out the contract between White Industries and Jones Group, a knock on the door interrupted her. When she opened the door, Nicole stood before her outside her room.
âDid you have a fight with Mr. Harris?â Nicole asked as she walked into the room and closed the door beside her.
âNo,â Sophia replied coolly.
âYou rely on Mr. Harris on a lot of things now. You should try to have fewer conflicts with him if possible.â Nicole suggested.
Sophia tightened her fists and responded vaguely. She did not want to talk about this at all. âNicole, can you help me have a look at this contract?â
âWhat contract is this?â Nicole took the contract from her and explained everything she was confused about. She also gave her notes on which parts of the contract to pay more attention to in the future.
