Lisa stopped dead in her tracks. She glared at Sophia viciously and wrapped her arms around Jenny's and began complaining tearfully. "Aunt Jenny, when my mother sent me over, you promised her that you will not let anyone bully me!"
Jenny had indeed made such a promise at that time. After hearing what she said at this moment, she was at a loss at what to do too.
"Why donât you say something, Aunt Jenny? Are you going to just stand around and watch Sophia humiliate me like that?!" Lisa raised her voice.
Lisa was clenching Jenny's arm so hard that it was hurting her. However, she could not retract it even though she wanted to. She said sulkily, "Soph, weâre family. Why donât we just let it pass? We donât lack servants at home either. If Lisa is willing to do anything, then let her do it. Iâve already promised her mother anyway."
"Since we donât lack servants, then we should just dismiss her." Even a mere servant was riding roughshod over her mother now. Sophia did not know what to make of her mother anymore.
Lisa was dumbfounded after hearing what she said and took a very long pause to come back to her senses. "Are... are you going to fire me?"
"Soph, you just came back, so you may not know that Lisa is your dad's relative. It wonât be appropriate for you to do this," Jenny said.
James frowned but did not say anything.
"Taking something without asking is stealing." Sophia said, "I don't like light-fingered servants like that. Letâs dismiss her. Fiona, please calculate and settle Ms. Lisaâs salary and ask her to leave."
A servant stepped forward and nodded.
Seeing that Sophia was serious about it, Lisa was getting anxious now and started shaking Jenny's arm violently. "Aunt Jenny, Sophia is about to dismiss me, why arenât you saying anything!"
"My mom may be your aunt, but she is my mother too. Who do you think is closer, a mother or an aunt?" Sophia said, "Apart from the necklace, I won't ask you to return anything else that you have taken from my house."
"Hereâs an advice for you, Ms. Lisa. Itâs important to know your own limitations. Donât ever take yourself too seriously!"
In the past, Jenny would say more to persuade Sophia, but there was now a gap between them as mother and daughter. Even though she wanted to persuade Sophia at this moment, she was also afraid that the latter would get angry because of it, hence it was difficult to make a choice.
Her intention, however, was misinterpreted when it reached Lisaâs ears. "I thought youâre a nice person, Aunt Jenny. So it was all just a pretense!
Fine. Iâll leave. Itâs not like I want to hang around at your house!"
She spat on the ground. "Youâre a bunch of snobs!"
Having said that, she picked up the bowl in front of Sophia, smashed it to the ground with a bang, and left.
Several servants in the dining room could not conceal the joy on their faces at the sight of this.
Sophia sat down, tapped on her phone before handing it over to Charles. He held the phone, thought of something, and the corners of his mouth curved up faintly.
âYouâre the best, Soph!" Sterling winked at her, complaining. "Lisa took herself too seriously when she first came but wasnât as arrogant as she is now.
She became more and more uncontrolled ever since Mom covered up for her after a few times and basically respected no one!"
Sophia did not expect a servant to throw such a huge tantrum. She ordered someone to get the floor cleaned up, then said to Jenny, "A bucket of rice cultivates gratitude, loads of rice cause hatred, Mom. Donât indulge her too much."
"I wasnât indulging her. Sheâs your dad's relative after all. Now that youâve done this to her, who knows what she will tell your fatherâs neighbors when she gets back," Jenny said carefully.
Sophia said, "Youâre so kind to her right now, but she may not necessarily think the same. She might even bear a grudge against you."
Jenny disagreed but she made no further comment.
Everyone at the table ate in silence. No one, not even Sterling, said anything. When they were almost at the end of their meal, Jenny raised her glass, attempting to liven up the atmosphere. "Sterling signed a contract with Langdon Corporation today. Letâs congratulate him."
"Itâs Lenyess Corporation. Donât say it if you donât know anything!" James chided as he raised his glass.
Jenny's face turned pink. She lowered her head, wiped the corners of her eyes, then clinked glasses with everyone in an embarrassed manner, and went upstairs with a disappointed look on her face after the meal.
"I'm going upstairs first." Sophia said to Charles, then followed her upstairs.
James invited Charles to the living room for a cup of tea. To show his sincerity, he had made the tea himself.
"What do you think, Charles?" James paid close attention to Charles' expression.
Charles took a sip and put down the teacup. "I rarely taste any tea as good as this."
James breathed a sigh of relief after hearing what he said. "I bought this specially from a friend who knows tea. He had only one can with him and reluctantly sold it to me after I paid him a huge sum of money."
"What an elegant and refined man you are, Mr. White," Charles said.
James shook his head. "I like drinking tea, but I'm only a crude man. I wonât go so far as to spend so much money to buy this small can of tea."
Having said that, he stopped talking and waited for Charles to speak.
Charles poured another cup and tasted it slowly, having no intention to speak at all.
"After learning that you are going to stay with Soph, I was worried that you will find it hard to get used to drinking other teas, thatâs why I bought this one. I have never done anything that called for me to part with something that means so much to me like that before," James said.
Charles smiled. "How is that possible? Aunt Jenny is someone who means so much to her parents. Back then, her parents did not agree to your relationship, but you still ended up taking her away even when she means so much to them, didnât you?"
Seeing how he was digressing from the topic of discussion, James could not hold it in any longer. "Itâs a waste for me to drink such good tea. Itâs yours now."
"Youâre too kind, Mr. White. I can't accept such an expensive gift from you." Charles declined.
James laughed and said, "You are too polite. We will be family soon. So what if you accept this bit of stuff?"
"Please donât say that. Even brothers keep careful accounts, let alone people like us." Charles said pointedly, "If I accept such an expensive gift, I won't be able to refuse if you make a request afterward."
His words were razor-sharp.
James took a sip of tea and said, "To be honest with you, I do have something to discuss with you. However, I think this will be mutually beneficial for us, hence you definitely wonât refuse."
"Thatâs hard to say. I don't believe in men's instincts." Charles said, "Back then, you thought Sophia was worthless, so you just abandoned her straight away, but now you took her home again, didnât you?"
He was clearly mocking James.
Despite that, James boasted himself as a man who knew when to fold them. He had no plans to argue with a kid of the likes of Charles. "Don't be in a hurry to decline yet. You can hear me out first. Itâs not too late for you to decline if you find it unsuitable."
Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!
ï¤Chapter 320 You Can Come To Me If You Need Any Help Charles put down his teacup and put on an expression to show that he was all ears.
"This afternoon, someone said that Master Harris has made a series of deployments, mainly focusing on several minor companies under Jones Group in the electrical appliances market?" James asked.
Charles smiled. "You are very well-informed, Mr. White."
