Sophia took a deep breath. âWhat about the people in the stairwell the other day?â
âI was the one who arranged it. Separating you and Mr. Harris, then sending you abroad was the least damaging option. Soph, Iâm sorry that I broke your heart, but I couldnât just let something happen to Jenna and Lennie.â The pain and bitterness in Nicoleâs voice were genuine and undisguised.
Silence.
Although the heater in the car was on full blast, Sophiaâs body felt frozen, and even her blood turned cold.
âSoph, I wonât mind if you blame me for everything, but can you please find a way to help Jenna and Lennie? After all, theyâre still part of the White family,â Nicole continued.
Sophia wiped her sweaty palms on her skirt. âWhere are you now?â
âIâm outside the White family manor now.â She was worried that something would happen to Jenna and Lennie, but now that Sterling had kicked her out, she could not enter the manor anymore.
Sophia frowned and mumbled a vague response. After she ended the call, she said to the bodyguard, âTo the White family manor please.â
The car switched lanes at the intersection ahead and began driving toward the White family manor.
On the way, Sophia gave Sterling a call and explained the whole thing to him. âSter, Iâm sorry,â she added at the end.
She thought her brother would scold her harshly, but instead, he merely said, âDonât think too much about it, how is this possibly your fault? Just wait for me, Iâm on my way now!â
By the time she reached the manor, half an hour had passed.
As soon as Sophia got out of the car, she noticed Nicole seeking refuge in the lee of the wall. Her lips were frozen into a shade of blue-purple and her right sleeve looked particularly empty.
âIâm sorry.â
Sophiaâs throat tightened as tears brimmed the edge of her eyes. She knelt down before Nicole and kept her head low.
She was the one who started all this, yet she still blamed her sister-in-law for everything, including putting Dad into a coma. Worst of all, her sister-in-
law lost an arm too...
âSoph, get up now! I should be glad that youâre not angry at me, how can I possibly blame you?â Nicole wanted to get up and pull Sophia up, but after squatting down for such a long time, her legs were numb. Now that she only had one arm, she could barely muster enough energy to stand up herself.
Sophia shook her head and remained kneeling on the ground.
Screechââ
An ear-piercing squeal broke through the air.
Sterling jumped out of his car and ran over. However, just as he got nearer to the two of them, he gradually slowed down. He did not know how to face Sophia and Nicole.
His sister had indirectly caused his wife to lose an arm, and both his children were in danger now; on the other hand, his wife indirectly caused his father to become a vegetable.
He no longer knew how to judge for himself who was right and who was wrong.
One was on her knees, one was crouched on the floor, and one remained standing.
The three of them remained like this for a very long time, and finally, Sterling came nearer and pulled both of them up from the ground.
âLetâs not blame anyone anymore! At the end of the day, the only person to be blamed is that wicked old witch, Sylvia Yates! If it werenât for her, we wouldnât be in this position right now!â
Nicole lowered her head and let out a sigh. âI just wanted to send Soph abroad and we could have been done with this, but I didnât expect...â
âLetâs not get upset and dwell on apologies...â Before Sterling finished his sentence, he suddenly remembered something. His eyes reddened as he raised his voice at Nicole. âHow could you keep something so important from me? How do you expect me to live with myself like this?â
Nicole looked at him with tears in her eyes. âDo you think I wanted to lose an arm? Sylvia warned me not to speak, how could I possibly dare to disobey her? Even if I did tell you, what could you have done?â
Her voice broke when she screamed the last part of her sentence.
âYes, I admit I canât help much! I couldnât do anything when my sister was sent to prison, I couldnât do anything when my mom died, I couldnât do anything when my dad fell into a coma, and I couldnât do anything when my wife lost an arm! Yes, Iâm just a good-for-nothing piece of trash! Iâm completely useless! Is that what you want to hear?â Sterlingâs voice shook as he vented his frustrations. Everything that had happened was close to driving him mad at this point.
The average person would never encounter such things in their lives, yet somehow, he managed to have a series of unfortunate events that kept on happening.
The husband and wife stared at each other as both of them fell silent.
They used to be the sweetest couple and they almost never fought. However, right then, the two were flushed with rage and neither one was willing to give in to the other.
Sophiaâs heart wrenched as she saw the scene before her. She opened her mouth and tried to speak, but nothing came out... She did not know what to say, nor did she feel like she had the right to say anything.
If it was not for her, all this would not have happened.
âIâm going to kill those two nannies now! Letâs see what that wicked old witch can do then!â The feeling of guilt, anger, and most importantly, the realization of his own incompetence, all these emotions surged through Sterlingâs chest, tearing his heart apart.
He turned around and walked toward the house.
Sophia immediately grabbed his arm and stopped him. âSter, letâs not act recklessly.â
âWhat do you mean recklessly?â Sterling was on the verge of breaking down. âWhat else can I do if I donât kill those two? Ah? If that wicked old witch is capable of using those two nannies to take Jenna away and cut off your sister-in-lawâs arm, sheâs certainly capable of using the same tricks to threaten your life tomorrow!â
He was like a madman, his right arm constantly beating his chest as he cried whilst laughed at the same time. âWhat can I do? D*mn it, what else can I f*cking do? Am I just supposed to watch my sister, my wife, my children, and everyone around me get toyed around by that wicked old witch?!â
He roared like a wild beast in the middle of the quiet night.
âWhat are you doing yelling at a pregnant lady? I know youâre upset, but isnât she upset as well?â Nicole stood in front of Sophia protectively.
Perhaps Nicole moved too forcefully, the wound on her right arm began to bleed again. Within seconds, the bandage was drenched with blood and a strong smell of blood drifted in the air.
All of a sudden, Sophia felt transported back to the days where she just got out of prison and Charles used her family against her to force her to work at Dream Club.
She remembered the anger and frustration she felt, and the unwillingness that she was forced to suppress. She had no choice but to follow his instructions back then.
However, Sylvia Yates was the one threatening her this time around.
âDonât you remember that youâre injured? What are you doing here and not properly resting in the hospital? Youâre a mother of two children, why arenât you still capable of taking care of yourself?â Sterling could not be bothered by everything else as he rushed forward to check on Nicoleâs wound anxiously.
The wound had opened under the strain and she had to return to the hospital to treat it.
Sterling immediately bent down to pick Nicole up in his arms before heading to his car. However, he paused suddenly after taking a few steps forward. He turned around to look back at the house as a vein popped up on his forehead.
âMy wound is completely fine, thereâs no need to go to the hospital! Let me down this instant!â Nicole screamed as she struggled in his arms. She could not stop worrying about their two children.
With her struggling so much, the wound opened even more. Blood began to stain the bandages and slowly dripped on Sterlingâs clothes.
Sterlingâs heart ached at the sight of it. He pressed on her arm and yelled, âCan you stop fidgeting around? Youâre bleeding again, for f*ckâs sake!
Look how much blood there is, are you trying to kill yourself now?!â
He turned to Sophia and said, âIâm bringing Nicole to the hospital now, Iâll leave my children to you!â
âAlright.â
She would die before she let anything happen to her niece and nephew. After all, the children were innocent in this entire event.
Sophia watched as Sterling drove away and she remained standing for a while before she finally took her phone out and dialed Sylviaâs number.
This time, Sylvia picked up. She answered the phone in a teasing tone, sounding like a mouse toying with a cat. âI told you would come to see me in the end, didnât I?â
âI want to talk to you,â Sophia simply said.
Sylvia laughed gently. âYou want to talk? Come and see me right now then.â
