Chapter 438

Charles watched as the flames engulfed her and she writhed in agony in the fire, screaming for help as she desperately waited for him to save her.

However, he could not move a step. Even his throat seemed to be stuffed and he could not speak at all.

-

“Sophia... Sophia!”

Charles opened his eyes, only to realize that he was on a hospital bed lying face up facing the empty, white ceiling.

He sat up in a daze and wiped his face, realizing that his face was covered with tear streaks.

“The patient is physically fine, this was caused by insufficient rest, hunger, excessive mental stress, and extreme grief. Please keep an eye on his mental state for this period of time,” the doctor said to Yvette.

Yvette nodded and escorted the doctor out of the room before she returned to the bed.

She wanted to talk some sense into her son but every time she tried to open her mouth, she could only sigh.

Charles lifted the blanket, wanting to get out of bed.

“Get some rest, will you? Where do you want to do?” Yvette hurried over to help him, worried he would stumble and fall.

Charles shook her hand away, his voice hoarse and weak when he replied, “I need to see Sophia.”

Everything that happened in his dream was in the past, except for the car explosion. He remembered that day. When Sophia got out of the car, she sprained her ankle because she was not used to wearing high heels, and in the end, he carried her to the sickbay in school.

Why had he not realize how much he liked her back then?

“There’s no need for you to do that.” Yvette had sighed more times this day than in her entire lifetime.

Charles paused in his tracks. “Why?”

“She has been sent for cremation. Ster said that he couldn’t bear seeing Soph like this and it hurt him too much so he and Nicole sent Soph for cremation,” Yvette explained.

Charles lowered his gaze and fell silent. He stood on the spot for a moment before he slowly sat down on the ground.

“What are you doing sitting on the floor?” Yvette rushed over to help him up. “It’s chilly on the floor, you should at least sit on the bed.”

“Leave me alone.” Charles shrugged her away as he stood up and searched for the packet of cigarettes among his pile of clothes but had no luck.

Upon seeing this, Yvette said, “Are you looking for your cigarettes? I threw them away. You worked so hard to quit smoking before this, you should stop smoking now, it’s not good for your health.”

Charles did not respond as he sat back on the ground.

Although he felt uncomfortable sitting on the cold, hard ground, the chill that came into contact with his body soothed his heart somehow and his anxious heart felt slightly quietened and calmed. Still, the peacefulness lasted for mere seconds.

Charles stood up again and reached for his phone to make a call. “Where’s Leah?”

“Everything was done according to your instructions. Her limbs have been broken and she’s recovering in the hospital now. She’ll be sent to prison once she’s physically stronger.”

Charles’ eyes immediately turned cold. “Send her over now and arrange a medical team for her. Just make sure she doesn’t die.”

Back then, she had asked him to break Sophia’s leg right before throwing Sophia into prison, had she not?

He wanted her to have a taste of her own medicine.

The person on the other end of the phone hesitated slightly before replying, “Mr. Harris, the Jones and Lewis family already found out about this.

They won’t agree to this.”

This was indeed something Charles would have considered in the past because he knew that one small mistake could lead to a disastrous tragedy.

However, now that Sophia was no longer around, what more could he lose?

“You don’t have to worry about all these, just follow my orders and do what I say, got it?” Charles’ grip tightened around his phone as a faint vein popped up on his forehead.

He was not on speakerphone so Yvette could not hear what the other party was saying, but judging from what he had said so far, she could almost guess what he meant.

She walked up to him and said with a frown, “Charles, do you know how many people are watching you right now? If you do this, it’ll only...”

“Do you think the consequences matter to me anymore?” Charles’ eyes were filled with bitterness, but there was also a subtle sneering look. “If anything happens to the Harris family, you can just flee and go back to the Cox family.”

As for him, he would find a way to avenge Sophia’s death no matter what, even if it would cost him his life!

“You’re acting too rashly,” Yvette said, “Your fate has always been intertwined with the Harris family. If the Harris family falls, do you think you can avenge Soph’s death with just your strength alone?”

Charles lowered his gaze at her as darkness cast over his eyes. “What do you want me to do then? Continue hiding? Or perhaps work with someone to find the person behind the scenes who did all this and try to come up with a way to avenge Sophia?”

“Well... If that’s not the solution, what else can you possibly do?” Yvette paused for a moment before answering him. She had never seen his son behave this way.

Charles guffawed at her as bitter tears brimmed the edge of his eyes. The pain of losing the woman he loved was almost tearing him apart.

“Of course, that’s the rational way, but I... I can’t take it anymore. Mom, I can’t hold this pain in anymore. I don’t have the will to go on anymore,”

Charles said as he pointed to his chest.

The mere sight of those people and just hearing their names gave him the urge to kill them all, so how could he possibly bring himself to continue playing games with them?

Yvette knew that Sophia’s death would hit him hard, but she had not imagined that it would affect him so greatly.

He rarely expressed what he liked or what he disliked. Even when he found out that his father had cheated on his mother when he was nine years old, he was silent for an entire afternoon and said nothing at all.

As for his mother, he was more protective over her than others, but he was certainly not as close to her like other people and their mothers.

Hence, she had always taken a liking toward Sophia as she had more of a sweet mouth and would be clingy at times too, and that was why only with Sophia, she experienced the real feeling of being a mother.

It turns out that Charles had such deep feelings for Soph.

“Just do what I say. Also, aside from fatal injuries that require emergency treatment at the hospital, do not allow Leah to leave her cell. If she gets close to any of the other prisoners, cut them off and separate them. Understand?”

While Yvette was still taking in all the realizations, Charles had already given instructions to the person on the phone.

Then, he ended the call when he heard a response from the person.

It did not matter how glorious he was before this, once the Harris family toppled over, he would be nothing.

Not everyone could handle the difference in power and position.

“My only regret my entire life is that I didn’t protect the woman I love and our child,” Charles said without a slight moment of hesitation.

Without them, everything else meant nothing to him.
