Charles scoffed as coldness returned to his eyes. âYou laid a finger on my woman, Iâm just paying you back for everything you did. Itâs as simple as that, isnât it?â
âI thought you were smart enough not to meddle because youâre aware of the cost. After all, making a move on me would cost you tremendous losses as well and itâs just not worth it,â Mr. Zellner replied.
He would make sure that Harris Corporation would be exposed to the public for being involved in human experiments before anything happened to him. Then, the Harris family would suffer as well.
Charles tightened his grip around his phone and said sternly, âJust because you donât think itâs worth it doesnât mean I think so too.â
To him, Sophia was worth it. Sophia was worth risking everything for.
Seeing that Charles was unfazed by material interests, Mr. Zellner decided to try another approach. âYouâre just as sentimental as me. My wife passed away at the age of thirty from breast cancer and I havenât remarried since. I just couldnât bring myself to move on because I canât anyone else.â
âI understand better than anyone how it feels to lose someone you love and I promise you, I have never thought of hurting Ms. White. Whether you believe me or not, I need to explain this to you. Mr. Harris, your grandmother, and Leah Jones were the ones who plotted Ms. Whiteâs murder, I truly didnât know anything about it.â
Charles merely snorted. âBreast cancer? Are you sure you didnât kill her because she was threatening to expose your love affairs?â
Silence.
Mr. Zellner did not respond.
After a long pause, he let out a heavy breath. âNo wonder everyone compliments your intelligence. Mr. Harris, I never wanted it to turn out this way but you forced me to be ruthless.â
Charles replied in an indifferent tone, âMr. Zellner, your ability to twist rights and wrongs around is truly admirable.â
If Mr. Zellner had not set his target on him and Sophia in the first place and forced them down this road, none of them would be in this situation!
Mr. Zellner chuckled. No longer backing down as before, the fawning tone in his voice was gone this time. âMr. Harris, do you think that you have already won?â
Charlesâ expression was rigid as he kept quiet, and he lowered his hand from his ear, ready to end the call.
Right then, it was as if Mr. Zellner could sense that Charles was about to end the call and quickly said, âMr. Harris, do you know that Sophia is still alive?â
How did he know that Sophia was still alive?
How did he find out about something she had hidden from everyone including himself, her brother, and sister-in-law!
Charlesâ Adamâs apple bobbed as his eyes flashed. A sense of uneasiness rose to his chest.
Mr. Zellner continued, âMr. Harris, youâre very quiet. Do you not believe me?â He chuckled and continued in an amiable tone, âWhat a coincidence, Ms. White has come to pay me a visit. Mr. Harris, would you like to join us?â
â!â Charlesâ eyes widened as his eyelids flickered uncontrollably. âSophia is already dead, her brother himself sent her body to the crematorium for cremation.â
He could not tell whether Mr. Zellner was trying to deceive him or if the man really was saying that Sophia is still alive.
Sterling could not hear what Mr. Zellner was saying, but judging from Charlesâ responses, he had somewhat of an idea what the conversation was about and his face paled as well.
âI understand what youâre thinking, Mr. Harris. Itâs quite hard to think that the dead can come back to life, isnât it?â Mr. Zellner paused for a short moment before continuing, âDo you remember Ms. Scarlett Griffin? The young lady paid you a few visits just recently, Iâm sure you remember her.â
The frown on Charlesâ face deepened. It seems that Mr. Zellner knew quite a lot too since he mentioned Scarlett.
The manâs words only confirmed his suspicions. âYou saw the car crash site yourself, how can the jade pendant and letter remain unscathed amidst it all? There is only one possibility ââ the letter was written post-accident, and the jade pendant was just not at the scene of the accident at the time.â
From what he was telling Charles now, it was obvious that he was not trying to provoke Charles, but he actually knew that Sophia was truly still alive.
Charles did not play stupid either anymore. He lowered his tone and replied, âThat only proves that Sophia is still alive, how can you prove that you have her in your hands?â
He was trying very hard to maintain his cool, but no matter how hard he tried, his voice shook uncontrollably.
From the moment he had found out that Sophia was still alive, he had forced himself not to go find her and kept the information to himself because he was worried that he might put her in danger!
However, Mr. Zellner still found out in the end!
âMr. Zellner, youâre very quiet. Can I take this as sheâs not with you either?â
It was quite unlikely that Mr. Zellner would act rashly and alert the enemy, but since he dared to tell Charles everything he knew, it meant that Sophia was already in his hands. Still, Charles could not help but cling on to the last ray of hope.
Charles did not ask what news Mr. Zellner was referring to, but as soon as he heard the words, he ran upstairs immediately.
Sterling followed him anxiously. âWhere are you going? Did something happen to Soph?â
Charles switched on the laptop on the table in his study and balanced his phone between his shoulders and ear as he quickly checked the news.
âHighway High-speed Chase In Pursuit of Lone Woman ââ Woman Currently Lost As Police In The Process of Investigation.â
He quickly clicked the headlines and glanced through the article quickly.
Confused, Sterling read through the news as well, and when he saw one of the photos in the article, he raised his voice in surprise, âIsnât this... Isnât this Master Harris? Isnât he supposed to be dead?â
In the series of photos, Master Harris was caught on camera as he got out of the Lincoln stretch limousine and got into an inconspicuous-looking SUV. Just as they were still searching for Sophia in the photos, the SUV had already left the scene along with Master Harris.
Aside from the Lincoln limo, all of Master Harrisâ men drove SUVâs, whereas the people who took Sophia away drove a black Volkswagen. It was quite obvious that there were both parties involved.
Instead of answering her question, Charles asked Mr. Zellner coldly, âHow are you willing to let her go?â
Mr. Zellner was infamous for his cruel and heartless tactics. Sophia falling into his hands was as bad as things could get!
âWe shouldnât discuss such a complicated matter through the phone,â Mr. Zellner replied, âIâll send you an address now, you can come over and we shall talk.â

âHowever, you can only come alone. If I find out that you have company, you will never get to see this woman whom you love dearly for the rest of your life. This time, I mean it.â
Sterling was pressing his ear to Charlesâ phone so he could hear every single word. Before Charles responded, he shouted angrily, âIâll come with Harris! Watch what Iâll do to you if you dare touch my sister!â
Mr. Zellner pretended as if he had not heard a single word Sterling had said as he repeated his question to Charles. âDo we have a deal?â
â... Okay!â Charles squeezed out the word with difficulty. âJust take note that Iâll make you regret being born in the first place if you make her suffer even just a tiny bit!â
Mr. Zellner merely laughed. âMr. Harris, please be rest assured that Iâm treating Ms. White as my guest of honor, how could I possibly hurt her? Iâll text you my address now and remember, you can only come alone. Donât bring anyone, not even Mr. White.â
