Leah bit her lip and immediately winced in pain, even a simple action as such pulled on the bruises on her face. Nevertheless, this was nothing compared to the pain she suffered when she was beaten up.
For this period of time, she had asked herself countless times.
Did she regret what she did?
Did she hate them?
Did she feel guilty?
Her answer never changed. She did not regret everything she had done, she did not bear hatred, and neither did she feel guilty.
She just could not understand love. She liked Charles because he was the best. Whether it was his family background or his looks and abilities, he was one in a million, and only a perfect man like him was good enough for her.
So why did Charles like Sophia?
Sophia was reckless and stupid, just like Sterling. If it was not for the fact that their family had a little bit of money and their good looks, they were nothing!
She had put in so much effort and did so many things for Charles, but why had he never noticed her?
When Leah still could not figure it out, she decided not to think about it anymore.
Either way, thinking about it would not change the fact that she had lost â just a month ago, Charles had sent someone over to tell her that Sophia was still alive and passed her their wedding invitation.
Sophia was still alive and was living happily, but her life was a living hell as she suffered in prison. Was this not a sign that she had lost?
She was willing to admit defeat, and she did not hate Sophia and Charles. After all, all was fair in love and war. However, she did not feel guilty as they were even now.
Clank!
Just as Leah was immersed deep in her thoughts, the prison door opened.
A prison guard walked in and said, "Leah, your brother is here to see you."
"My... brother?" Leah had not spoken for a very long time. There was nothing she could say and anyway, she did not want to talk to anyone else.
Hence, her voice was unusually hoarse and dry.
The prison guard nodded and called out to someone else as they carried Leah out of the cell.
Although the prison guards were not rough with her, they were not exactly gentle either, so Leah felt uncomfortable under their touch. However, she could not stop smiling.
Nobody had visited her ever since she was thrown in prison, not even her family.
Sometimes when she laid below women with their bodies pressed against her as they satisfied their sexual needs, she would stare at the ceiling and think to herself. Did everyone outside prison forget about her already?
As soon as Leah got to the visiting room, she instantly saw William through the glass.
It seems that he had not been doing well. He had lost a lot of weight, and he seemed more restrained and reserved than before.
The prison guards pushed her down into her seat and grabbed the phone before holding it by her ear.
"Will," Leah gave him a small smile and called out to him just like she used to.
"Hello," William replied curtly. His eyes wandered to her neck that was covered with hickies and wounds, and after a short pause, he asked with difficulty, "How... How have you been?"
There was a hint of pity and heartache in his eyes, and Leah's heart prickled. She wanted to tug on her sleeves but she could not move her hands at all. "Just alright, I've been alright."
She looked at him, still smiling.
William's Adam's apple bobbed and he clenched his fists. "I'm sorry it took so long for me to come and see you."
He was indeed furious at her, and he did hate her for using him, but after the initial anger subsided, he had tried different ways to come and see her.
However, the Harris and White family had given the prison specific orders, and even the Cox family mentioned something as well. Hence, he had to go out of the way and pulled some strings in order to arrange this visit.
"What's there to be sorry about?" Leah smiled at him and her tone was light as she continued, "You're here now, aren't you?"
William opened his mouth several times and his eyes turned red, but no words came out.
"We don't have much time, Will, if you don't tell me everything you want to, who knows when will we see each other next," Leah said casually, and she seemed so unbothered as if she was the one visiting him in prison.
William hesitated for a little more before he finally said, "Mom and Dad are divorced now."
"Is she married to Uncle Harris now?" Leah did not look surprised at all.
William looked up at her, his eyes filled with shock. "Someone told you already?"
"It's no surprise, I already guessed it
myself," Leak said, "Knowing him, he's only so obsessed with Mom because he couldn't win her over even after all these years. Now that he finally won her over, he'll probably get sick of her very soon." S
She paused for a second and bit her lip. "Honestly, if you don't want to bring trouble
to yourself, I think it's best if you cut Mom out of your life."
William frowned slightly. He was embarrassed by his mother's new love affair, but he disagreed with his sister. "Uncle Harris has liked Mom for so many years now, I'm sure he'll be loyal to Mom and won't hurt Mom."
Leah was not surprised by his reaction. "I'm just saying, it's up to you whether you want to take my advice. However, if you choose to
continue being so indecisive, all I can say is that your painful days are just beginning." Content belongs to
William's personality was too similar to Aunt Jenny's. They could never say no to the people close to them, and they were unable to be like Charles who was willing to
wholly focus on one person and give it his all.
This sloppy manner of dealing with things would only make his life a mess.
It was not easy for William to seize this opportunity to see her so he did not want to get into a fight with her or argue with her about upsetting matters, and so he quickly switched the topic.
"Sophia's still alive so there might still space for discussion with your sentence. Leah, you're the one in the wrong here, but if you sincerely apologize to Sophia and
Mr. Harris, they should..."
Leah immediately shook her head and interrupted him. "I lost. I deserve to be here as a punishment, but I don't owe them anything so there's nothing to apologize for. All I ever did was to pursue Charles because I like him.â
"Why are you still so stubborn?" William raised his voice. "First, you framed Sophia for a crime. Then, you tried to kill her! Can't you see that this is all your fault? You..." She had not expected him to come to see her to say these things.
Her eyes misted over and she gulped lightly. "Will, I think our time is up, it's time for
me to leave now."
She looked up at the prison guards and smiled at them. "Sorry to trouble you, you can take me back now. Thank you."
The two prison guards nodded and lifted her as they made their way to the door. "Leah! Leah!!!" William shouted after her, his eyes bloodshot.
However, Leah did not even look back. The prison guards sent her straight back to
her cell.
Before they closed the gate, she called out to the guards, "Can you please pass a
message to my brother?"
"Sure."
"Can you please tell my brother..." Leah paused for a moment as tears brimmed the edge of her eyes, but the smile on her face was as bright as ever, just like a
blooming flower in spring. "Goodbye."
"Alright."
Clank.
The prison guard left and closed the gate behind her.
Leah laid back in bed and looked up at the ceiling. She tipped her head up to stop
the bitterness that surged through her eyes. She had already lost, and she would not allow herself to lose her dignity by shedding a tear for them.
It was New Year's Eve so all the other inmates were preparing for the dinner party
tonight. She was the only one left in the cell, and she never imagined how relieved and relaxed she would feel to be all alone.
She could hear fireworks from outside as people were already celebrating the New
Year.
Leah licked her dry lips and smiled wryly to herself. With her mouth, she pulled a small towel from beneath her pillow and stuffed it into her glass of water.
One of the inmates had been very nice to her, and this was the first time she asked
the woman for help to prepare these things.
She was already getting tired by doing this one thing.
She panted heavily as she tried to
catch her breath. Then, she nudged closer to the glass and pushed over Once again, she held the tower
in her mouth and slowly spread it over the floor before she pressed her face down against it. S
Every breath became harder and harder as she could not breathe.
As seconds passed, she got even dizzier and it was painfully uncomfortable. Her body wanted to move away by instinct, but her rationale forced her to stay still.
As she plunged into darkness, the corner of her lips curled up as a teardrop trickled
down her cheek.
How wonderful it was to finally die...
All she wanted was a love like Charles' and Sophia's, to have someone to love her
the way Charles loved Sophia.
At the very last second before she died, she finally admitted to herself. She had
always been jealous of that woman whom she looked down on.
