Chapter 493

"Soph had liked Mr. Harris for such a long time yet he sent her in himself, she must be terribly upset."

"Mr. Harris and Soph's parents are truly outrageous! At least her brother is doing something, but it's a pity that he doesn't have a say in the family. No matter how I see it, it doesn't seem as if Soph staged the car accident to kill someone! Have they lost their minds?"

"Soph doesn't have an easy life, she just got out of prison and Mr. Harris has forced her to work at Dream Club. She suffered so many illnesses when she was in prison too, first her legs and the pulmonary edema incident. My heart breaks for that poor girl."

All these years, Victor had heard about Sophia through his Aunt Lucy. Although he had only seen pictures of her, he knew almost everything about her.

He knew that she lived wild and carefree when she was young, and he knew how quiet and reserved she became after being released from prison, becoming the most humble person he knew.

It was hard to place his feelings into words but somehow, a stranger who came to life from his aunt's stories somehow felt like an old, trusty friend to him.

"Ladies and gentleman, the plane is about to descend now. Please fasten your seatbelts."

The announcement was then followed by a translated version in French.

After the plane landed, Victor grabbed his suitcase and got into his friend's car. As soon as he got in the car, his aunt came calling. "Vic, have you reached the airport?"

"Yeap."

"There's an emergency with Soph's legs so don't go home first, head to the hospital, she's waiting there now!"

His Aunt Lucy who had doted on him since young, was actually asking him to not go home first, but to the hospital for someone else's sake.

Victor felt a little envious and slightly amused. It seems that his aunt truly liked this Ms. White very much.

He agreed to her request and ended the call swiftly. Then, he turned to his friend and said, "I'm not going home now, can you please drop me at the hospital?"

"You're bringing your luggage to the hospital? When did you become so dedicated to your work?" His friend teased him.

Victor chuckled and shook his head, then he repeated his aunt's words to his friend.

"Ah, that Ms. White is truly a poor thing. When I went to the club some time ago, I saw her kneeling on the floor at the entrance of the club. With her leg injuries, it's basically torture to have her kneel for such a long period of time."

"I heard she got punished because of Mr. Jones. Hey, aren't there rumors that Mr. Jones used to be Ms. White's admirer? Who knows, he might be mad because she didn't give him a chance last time and he's just seeking revenge now."

His friend said all that casually.

Victor frowned quietly. Perhaps it was because his aunt was always talking about Ms. White, he had a good impression of her and he did not feel good about hearing her unfortunate happenings.

He especially felt even more unpleasant because the ones bullying her were Mr. Harris and Mr. Jones, and just because they abused their powers.

He had always heard good things about Mr. Jones, but it turns out he was not much of a good guy either.

The car stopped outside at the hospital where Victor got down. "I'll leave my luggage with you for now and come by to pick it up tonight."

"No problem." His friend was worried and could not help but add, "Mr. Harris should be there as well. Don't go around messing with the Harris family, they're not someone you want to have on your bad side. Be cautious with your words and control your temper when you deal with them, okay?"

Victor simply mumbled a response and set off to see his mother at the dean's room before he finally got to meet the Sophia White he had heard so many stories about.

She was nothing like he expected.

He had thought someone like her background would still have a little haughty princessy temperament no matter how reserved and introverted she seemed on the surface.

However, her eyes were hollow and her facial expression empty. Instead of looking like the young twenty-year-old that she was, she resembled more of an elderly

woman.

She radiated hopelessness and there was no life to her, just like a soulless corpse.

Sure enough, the legendary Mr. Harris was there as well. Despite his exceptional features, Victor did not like him at all. He simply entertained the man briefly before he turned to Sophia to talk about his treatment plan for her legs.

However, she turned him down.

He was curious, but he did not ask any questions. A few days later, he figured it out himself while

interacting with her that she hadnet

initially turned him down not

because she did not want to be

treated, but because she was

worried that Charles would break her

legs again. Content belongs to

Victor had never experienced a situation like this, and he could not imagine how much pain and suffering one must have gone through to lose so much hope just because she did not want to be hurt again.

He paid special attention to his

treatment for her, and it was not just

because his aunt had specifically reminded him tens of thousands of

times but also because he pitied her being trapped in a desperate situation and wanting to die, though not being able to. If their positions were reversed, he might not even be as strong as her.

"Did you hear that Ms. White got admitted to the emergency room again? I heard it's because she was locked outside on the balcony and her pulmonary edema

recurred."

"Such a poor girl, she tried to kill herself by crashing her car too but it didn't work.

Maybe she might be lucky enough and die this time."

Victor heard two nurses discussing when he came to work. The latter sentence was harsh, but he could not deny the fact that it truly described how hopeless Sophia's situation was: death might actually be where she could finally find release.

However, she was successfully rescued once again.

He could not tell whether God took pity on her or was trying to punish her for letting

her live.

When Victor went to see Sophia, he bumped into Charles in a rampage. The man did not look like he was in a good state, but he did not pity him at all. Instead, he felt

weirdly at ease.

Sophia was just trying to find her release, but that did not mean that she had to die.

If Charles died, she would be freed as well.

He spoke to Sophia for only a short moment and he could already sense how cautious Charles was, as if he was jealous of a rival. However, Victor felt confused

and amused.

Was Charles jealous because he liked Sophia?

Why was he torturing the woman he liked then? Why was he making her life a living

hell?

Victor could not wrap his head around the question nor did he bother to think about

it. Then on, he decided that he would do everything he could to help Sophia as long as it was within his abilities.

Charles came by to see him every now and then throughout the next period of time, even telling him that he must treat Sophia's leg no matter how much it cost. Frankly,

it was not much of a hassle to treat Sophia's leg, but he did not want to go easy on

Charles.

He did not like Charles. He really did not like him at all. Hence, he deliberately came

up with a few conditions, but to his surprise, Charles agreed to them without a single

hesitation.

This man, whom he disliked with every single cell of his body, seems to be different from what he had expected.

Victor no longer paid much attention to Charles anymore, and instead, focused all

his attention on treating Sophia. She came by once every week and was recovering much faster than patients he had treated in the past. Charles would accompany her for every session, and every time he rolled up Sophia's pants, Charles' gaze would pierce through his body.

Technically, it was unavoidable for a doctor to have physical contact with his patients; and besides, he never crossed any line with Sophia. Aftera,

short period of time of meeting her, the two of them were merely friends, so he really did not understand why Charles was being so hostile toward him.

Victor could not be bothered to be concerned about this issue either. As he slowly

got to know her better, he realized that she was an interesting person and they both

shared the same values.

However, he never thought much about her in the beginning. Every time he came into contact with Sophia, he just thought of her as a good friend, a patient.
