A week after the two young royals had confessed their love for one another, James and his family left for France where they would reclaim their throne from the Emperor. Elizabeth was sitting in her bedchambers, reading, when her principal lady announced the arrivals of Ambassadors Chapuys and Mendoza. Elizabeth stood from her seat and said, "Ambassador Chapuys and Amassador Mendoza." The two ambassadors took their hats off and bowed to the Princess. The princess had her ladies leave the room, in fear that they will be questioned about her loyalty. Elizabeth said to the two men, holding her hand out for them to kiss, "I am aware that you are here to help with my father's Great Matter in my mother's favor?" Ambassador Mendoza replied, "Yes, Your Royal Highness. Your cousin, the Holy Emperor, has taken your mother's side and urged her to keep strong. And for you, in the most deep respect, to do what you can to sway your father's mind." Elizabeth said, sitting down, "Milords, with all due to respect, how I can take advice from a man who has held me and my lover and my lover's family captive for almost a year? And the man was a family member of my family, above all things?" Ambassador Chapuys took a deep breath and replied, sitting down with Ambassador Mendoza after permission from the Princess, "Our Emperor has shown how regretful and is guilt ridden and has asked for Your Highness for your forgiveness." Elizabeth had enough of hearing about how Charles wanted her forgiveness and stood, causing the two ambassadors to stand as well. Out of frustration, she dismissed the ambassadors and went to stand in front of her window.

Deciding that she needed to vent out her frustrations, the princess changed into her riding clothes and left to go horseback riding, followed by her ladies. One of her ladies, who she had been friends with since infancy and was also her principal lady-in-waiting, came up to her.  She said to her, concerned, "Where are you going, Your Highness?" Elizabeth replied, "I need to go calm myself. And the only way for me to do so is to go horseback riding and practice archery. You will be the only one to come with me, for I cannot trust anyone anymore, Lady Eleanor." Lady Eleanor curtsied and dismissed the other ladies-in-waiting, telling them to go back to their mistress' bedchambers. Elizabeth went to the stables where one of the stable boys had brought her horse and Lady Eleanor's horse. The two ladies road off into the woods where they went to Elizabeth's place of calming, followed by ten guards. They came to a halt and a guard came up to Elizabeth to help her off of her horse. Elizabeth jumped off of her horse and took off her hooded cloak, giving it to a guard. She then turned to Lady Eleanor who gave her a body and arrow.

Just as she went to release her arrow on the target, someone shouted her name. The shout had startled the Princess and had sent the arrow flying, but not towards the target. Elizabeth turned, furious, and exclaimed, "What in God's name?!" She calmed down when she saw it was only her godfather, Sir Thomas Moore. Thomas jumped off his horse when he got closer and ran over to his goddaughter. Thomas said to the girl, "There has been an outbreak of the Sweating Sickness in the city of London. Your father has ordered me to take you to Wales where you will be safe from the spread." Elizabeth replied, as she rushed to get onto her horse after taking the hooded cloak from the guard, "What of my parents and sister?" Thomas said, getting back onto his horse, "Your father has sent your mother and sister to Ludlow where they will be safe. Your father has decided to stay at Hampton Court. He assures you to stay calm and to not fret. He has already sent your staff, including a physician, to Wales as well as your belongings. He wants me and my family to accompany you to Wales." After that, the group rushed to the Palace of Wales where Elizabeth was rushed into the castle.
