Elizabeth and James soon returned to England when they received news of Jane going into labor. Elizabeth had her ladies stay with her now one year old son and five year old half-sister in the nursery to keep them company while she aided her friend/stepmother in her childbirth. In the Queen's bedchamber, Jane screamed in pain as she pushed. Elizabeth held Jane's hand and said to her, "You're doing well, Jane. Keep going and soon you will hold your son in your arms." Little did Elizabeth, this birth would be long and painful, much like hers was with Nicholas. However, it will change not only her father but history forever. Elizabeth watched with concern as her stepmother continued to push and scream in pain. She pulled a midwife aside and whispered to her, "Why is she like this? Shouldn't the Queen have the baby by now?" The midwife whispered, "All childbirths are different, Your Highness. I fear that this one just may be like yours. I also fear that we may loose Her Majesty." Elizabeth held back a shocking gasp and turned to look at her close friend who screamed in pain. Her sister, Mary, turned to her and gave her a concerned look. Both sisters knew that they would either loose their close friend or a half sibling.
Elizabeth decided that she needed to be alone for awhile to take in with what the midwife had said. She knew that Jane would be alright with Jane's ladies, her sister, and midwives. The princess left the room and stood to look out a window. She felt like as if she was losing another family member. Elizabeth and Jane were so close when they were younger, even though Jane was a little younger than her. The two, along with Lady Eleanor and Edward, were very close friends. When they were with each other, it was if it was them against the world. Of course, Elizabeth's father never knew that she was close friends with the Seymour clan, only her mother and sister knew. Elizabeth heard someone calling her by her title and turned to see Edward. Edward bowed to his close friend and said to her, "Your Highness." Elizabeth smiled softly at the man and replied, "Sir Edward, what a surprise to see you here." Edward smiled and said, "How fairs my sister?" Elizabeth replied, "Which one, Edward? You have two sisters." Edward chuckled and said, "You were always the specific one. Jane, of course." Elizabeth sighed and replied, "She is in a lot of pain. The midwives fear that she may not make it." Edward let out a breath and did a sign of the cross. He said, "Has she spoken to you about who will be the godparents of the child yet?" Elizabeth replied, "Only briefly. She and my father were thinking about myself and James, Mary and her husband, and yourself and Lady Eleanor." During their time in France before Elizabeth gave birth, Mary had found a man by the name of Duke Nathaniel, the Duke of Sussex and a good friend of hers as well as James and Elizabeth. The two found themselves caring for one another then after a year, they married.
Edward was about to reply when Mary came running towards them with a fearful expression on her face. Elizabeth turned to her sister and said, with confusion, "Mary? What's the matter?" Mary replied, curtsying to Edward then her sister, "It's Her Majesty. She's bleeding." Elizabeth's eyes widened and she excused herself from Edward then rushed back to the royal bedchambers, with her sister not so far behind her. Edward watched the royal sisters run off with a worried expression. If only his father was here, then he would have some reassurance that Jane would possibly survive. However, he wasn't. Sir John Seymour sadly passed away from an illness, just after Jane was crowned Queen. With Elizabeth, Elizabeth encouraged her close friend to continue pushing. The birth seemed to be going on forever and there would be no end. It had already been two days since Jane had first started and everyone was worried. Thomas Cromwell even called a council meeting, with the orders of Henry, to discuss a possible bride for Henry if Jane didn't survive.
Then, after three and a half days, Jane finally gave birth to a son. A son which Henry had been craving for and was finally granted with one. Although, he did have a son with a former mistress, Elizabeth Blount, but he was illegitimate and couldn't hold a claim to the throne. He immediately called for celebrations to be held in honor of his newborn son. Elizabeth sat next to Jane on the bed as she looked at her half-brother. She smiled and said, "He's beautiful, Jane. Father will be most pleased." Jane replied, exhausted from the birth, "I hope so. It will please me to know that my husband is pleased." Elizabeth nodded at Jane and said, "Have you decided on godparents yet? Edward asked me and I told him that you briefly spoke about godparents." Jane said, nodding, "I have thought about Lady Mary and the Duke of Sussex and my sister, Lady Eleanor, and her husband, the Duke of Hartford Henry and I have thought about yourself and James but we considered the thought that you both were already godparents to little Elizabeth." Elizabeth chuckled and replied, "You don't have to worry yourself about choosing James and I to be godparents. We won't be upset if you don't choose us. We will be happy with anyone you choose for this little one's godparent." Jane smiled and said, "Thank you, Elizabeth." After that, Jane had one of her ladies-in-waiting take her newborn son to a wet nurse so she could rest. A new age of England had begun.
