I knew it was really late and that everyone was already in bed but I still rushed to the Conference Hall. I kept knocking on the door until Hellen opened it.
âAnnabelle, are you alright?â she asked and then noticed the oversized Star Stone in my hand.
âHelpâ is all I could say. She let me in and I set the stone in the centre of the table. Alfredâs head snapped up, he was half asleep but he became hyper when he looked at the stone.
âWhat is that?â he asked.
âThatâs my Star Stone from Ophiuchus,â
âWhat happened to it?â Hellen wondered.
I told them what I had found out. âI think that...thereâs a serpent growing inside that. Itâs been there ever since I got it but I didnât know that until recently.â
âHow is that possible?â Hellen looked at Alfred who was deep in thought but he looked like he knew something.
âI donât know but....â I trailed off. âBut I know itâs there. It looked me right in the eye.â I shuddered at the thought.
âShould we break it open?â Hellen suggested.
âNo!â Alfred said instantly. âIt will hatch open on itâs own.â
âHatch?â Hellen and I chorused.
âYes, itâs an egg and...that is a serpent.â Alfred confirmed. Overgrown egg, I could hear Tristan saying in my head.
âSo, itâs actually a serpent?â I sighed. âBut how and why?â
Alfred sat back down and I took a seat next to him. âThe snake belongs to the descendants of Ophiuchus,â Alfred explained. âI cannot believe that I didnât think of this before. I shouldâve told you, I forgot. It was in your motherâs family for years. Passed down to each generation. Itâs like a servant to the Ophiuchus. Itâs born from the brightest Star in Ophiuchus, named after it too.â
âRasalhague,â I remembered. âHead of the snake charmer.â
âYes,â Alfred confirmed. âItâs controlled by any descendant of Ophiuchus. You can tell it what to do and it will obey. He was really close to your mom.â
âHe?â I repeated.
âPet?â Hellen shuddered.
I remembered hearing rumours that some of the descendants of the Twelve Major had Celestial Creatures which represented their Constellation. I had no clue that Ophiuchus would gift me with a Celestial Serpent. Ophiuchus represented a man grasping a serpent. Now I was just confused.
âYes, it is male and itâs about to hatch,â Alfred told. I looked at the stone, it was cracking, its fissures were oozing slime. I gagged.
âI have to keep it?â I groaned. âCanât we just send it back?â I felt guilty calling him an âNo,â Alfred said. âIt turned into Stardust when all the Ophiuchus died, itâs life is tethered to yours now. If something happens to you it will affect the serpent. It may have sensed your presence when you went to Celestial Gardens and the Star, Rasalhaugue rebirthed it. It knew there was still one more Ophiuchus left, The Last Star of Ophiuchus, thatâs you. He was just waiting for the right time.â
âThis is freaky,â I said.
âNot really,â Alfred said. âYouâll like him when he awakes.â
I shivered at awakes. It sounded eerie.
âItâs already starting to break open,â Hellen pointed out.
âWhat should I do with it?â
âLeave it here overnight and weâll see what to do about it in the morning,â Alfred said.
âMaybe it wouldâve hatched by then,â Hellen offered.
I barely slept that night. I kept getting images of an oversized snake slithering up my leg and resting around my waist. I woke up screaming.
âAnnabelle,â Amara said groggily. âAre you okay?â
âYeah...yeah...Iâm fine. It was just a dream, Iâm sorry.â I stammered. I couldnât go back to sleep. I felt something crawling up my leg, leaving a trail of slime. I jerked up. I prayed that I was just hallucinating.
Rasalhague, it hissed every time I closed my eyes.
I got up and ran outside, it was early morning. I glanced at Ophiuchus. One of itâs Stars, no doubt the brightest was green and bigger than the rest. I went to the Conference Hall to check on the egg or stone. The door was locked. I walked around the training area, staring at Ophiuchus.
Head of the snake charmer, those words played in my head on repeat. Iâm the snake charmer or serpent bearer and the snake will be under my control.
I saw Alfred go into the building from the boysâ room. Hellen slept in her office so she was probably already there. I followed him into the Conference Hall. The door was open but I still knocked.
Alfred turned to face me, âItâs still rudimentary, itâll hatch in a few days.â
I nodded, at a loss of words.
âItâll be okay,â he comforted. âYouâll do great with a pet snake.â
I snorted. âI donât think so, Gramps.â
A smile crept up on his face, mine to. âAnnabelle...â
âYou can call me Belle.â
I was trying to force myself to call him in the hope of eventually forming a habbit.
âAlright, Belle,â he started. âYou need to know that this snake wonât harm you, it will be your friend and youâll like him.â
I groaned. âBut, Iâve never had a pet before. How come I didnât know about this before?â
âBecause you grew up among two people who hate the Ophiuchus. But now the serpent has awaken once more after many, many years.â
âI hope it doesnât scare my friends,â I joked.
I trained all day, it was a good distraction. Amara tried to talk to me but after that didnât work she sent Lewis. I shooed him away. I didnât take any of my meals, I wasnât famished even after all that training.
âBelle,â Tristan said as I was walking to the girlsâ room. I huffed and stopped.
âWhat?â
âWe need to talk,â he told.
âMaybe later,â
âNo, itâs important. You need to see this.â he said.
âIâm tired and dirty. Iâm not in the mood for this.â I said.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked.
I almost told him about the serpent but decided to keep it a secret. âNothing, Iâm fine.â
âThen will you please listen to me?â
âListening . . .â
âLewis and Amara found something about Lyra. You have to...â
I interrupted. âI donât care,â
I hid in the bathroom and took a shower, rubbing all the sweat and dirt off. My piercings didnât sting anymore. I was starting to regret the nose one but I could only take it out after the holes became permanent.
I found Amara waiting for me outside. She had her arms crossed and she looked furious. âWeâve been trying to talk to you all day,â
âI know,â I said casually.
âWhy arenât you listening?â
âOh, Iâm listening. Iâm just not paying attention,â I snapped. I lay on my back with my eyes closed.
âMe and Lewis figured out whatâs wrong with Lyra,â she said.
âI have other things to worry about.â I turned on my side.
âLike, what?â Amara raged. âYour worn out Ophiuchus Sign?â
I sat up, shocked. âHow do you know about that?â I demanded. âDid Tristan tell you?â
âNo, I saw it a few nights ago while you were sleeping. Itâs why you went into a coma,â she answered.
âThatâs all a lie,â I snorted, now on my feet. âI feel no different than I did before.â
âI think itâs got to do with Jaxon and how heâs stealing Stars,â she suggested.
âHuh?â
âWhat is heâs targeting Ophiuchus?â
I huffed. âIf he wanted to take Ophiuchus I think he wouldâve done it by now.â
âIâm serious,â she pressed. âWhat if he is?â
âI have no idea what youâre talking about,â I muttered.
âThatâs exactly what Lyra said and look whatâs happening to her,â Amara said.
âWhat is it?â
Amara sighed, as if she was about to deliver bad news. âYou know what the Geminis think? That if twins arenât born in their family itâs bad luck because thereâd be problems in the future.â
âI know that, but what does that have to do with Lyra?â
âGemini twins have opposite personalities. Lyra didnât split into two people. So, she has two people trapped in one body. Now, theyâre splitting up. Both of them are trying to take over the body.â
âOh no...â my insides turned.
âLyra and Lyla are opposite personalities,â she continued. âAnd theyâre fighting over the body so sheâs going to switch each day. One day as Lyra and the other as Lyla. Lyra wonât remember what Lyla did. And vice versa.â
âI talked to Lyra a few hours ago, before she changed into Lyla. Lyra says sheâs heard a voice in her head for her entire life telling her to do the opposite of everything she does. Threatening to come out.â
âAnd she didnât tell us.â
âShe thought she was going mad. Her family knew what it was but itâs not like they could do anything about it. They think itâs an aberration. Lyra was supposed to have a twin but in the Gemini family itâs a rarity when a person doesnât split into twins.â
âWhat now?â I asked, worried.
âLewis showed me some pictures of what happens to Geminis with split-personality disorder and...â she shuddered. âItâs bad, Belle. Itâs awful and frightening.â
I was at a loss for words. I ran out of the girlsâ quarters and out to the training area where Tristan was. He said Lewis was in the cafeteria. I sat next to him, he was reading a book about Geminis.
He showed me some notes and diagrams. I couldnât focus, my breathing fastened. I rearranged the words in my head but no matter what I did, they always had the same meaning. The pictures in his books were of another body coming out of one body and people with opposite personalities. They werenât scary but they looked like something that would definitely give me nightmares.
Suddenly, a snake hatching from a Star Stone wasnât the most freakish thing in the world. I realized that Lyla was the determined, confident and the type of girl who doesnât mind getting her hands dirty, the one who doesnât care about clothes or hair or shoes. Lyra was the girly, stylish and fancy gowns type of girl with a bubbly and friendly personality. I could hear my heart beating in my chest as I read about split personality. It only happened to Geminis and Lyra was the first Gemini in ten years to suffer from it.
This is why her family called it bad luck, because sheâd morph into two people. Which is unnatural.
âWhat happened to them? All of these Geminis?â I asked, shaking terribly.
âThey survived, donât worry.â Lewis comforted. âBut, the process of Lyla coming out of Lyra is agonizing. Lyla will be born from Lyraâs flesh.â
Bile rose in my throat, even though my stomach was empty I felt like throwing up. I ran to the girlâs room with those morbid images flashing in front of my eyes.
