Chapter 9: Chapter 9

Blood is thicker than waterWords: 8475

Adelina's POV:

I stumble through the hallway, almost tripping over everything that's already on the floor while subsequently knocking over more things. I go into my room taking out the drugs I had just bought and bring them into the living room while the familiar feeling of fear coursed through my veins.

I then go to Michaels room, picking up any money I could find with my shaking hands. As if my body is on autopilot, I go to the kitchen and pick up a plastic bag and hastily place the money I found in it.

I bring the slightly full bag into the basement where the safe is located. Tears prick my eyes as I struggle to properly put in the code, the image of Michael's throat being slit still fresh in my mind.

I almost sigh in relief when I finally manage to put it in right and the door pops open to reveal several stacks of hundred dollar bills. I start rapidly stuffing every last wad of money into the bag.

Once done I pick up the bag and bring to the living room. I tie it and place it on the floor as silent tears drip down my face , my body trembling as I drew ragged breath wondering what I would have to do next.

My eyes jolt open and fear is the first feeling I'm able to recognize. My  heavy breathing goes hand in hand with the sweat making my hair stick to my neck. My heart beats rapidly and I push my back against the headboard, leaning my head upwards and sit for a moment to catch my breath.

Actively trying to calm my heart , repeat soothing words in my head.

I'm ok.

Deep breath in.

I'm safe.

Deep breath out.

I turn to my phone and check the time to see it's  3 o'clock. I let out a sigh realizing I have to leave soon. I freshen up and find some clothes in the drawers that were somewhat my style.

I grab my phone and check my wrist to ensure the bracelet is still there. Walking over to the window, I silently thank those above that it's on the ground floor, unlocking it and opening it slightly.

Making my way back to the door, I take a deep breath and settle  my mind. It becomes blank but the feeling in my gut doesn't settle, which is nothing new as I've learnt to ignore.  I slightly smile as I feel the familiar mischievous glint in my eye.

I soon leave, making good time, and take one of the bikes in the garage to get around. Once I'm a few minutes from the store, I get off the bike and start walking while dragging it next to me. I clumsily trip over my own feet and bump into a few people.

This continues for a few minutes, few and far between and I end up with 25 dollars. I'm very aware that stealing is bad and whatnot, trust me, but it's proved to be a very useful skill in the past years.

I finally arrive at the target and leave the bicycle outside, hoping it'll be here when I get back. I walk in the store quickly, with my head held high, and pick up a cheap backpack. I quickly pay and leave and thankfully, the bike is still there.

I get back on the bike and head to my next location. There wasn't a very large population here, so everything was very small. It's fairly easy to get where you need to go using a bike because nothing is more than a 45 minute ride.

This was always a huge advantage for me. It was a decent means for transportation 2 years ago. I haven't really used it since then, there was no point.

My legs burning and me practically gasping for breath, I soon come to be in front of the place I never wanted to see again. The door is still busted but the whole house is now abandoned but it's sourrounded by yellow tape.

Crime scene- do not cross.

What a joke.

I'm not going in, that would be stupid.  I do, however, get off the bike and leave it laying on the ground while grabbing the backpack and swinging it onto my shoulders. I look around for a brief moment seeing no one is here.

I hesitantly start walking across the street, subtly looking around. I walk to the side of the house all the way to the back. Once I reach the back, I walk further until where the trees start.

I walk into to forest counting the trees as I pass them.

13, finally.

On the thirteenth tree I see the my plastic bag on the ground.  I pick it up, feeling it's weight, and stuff it into the bag I just bought without checking the contents. I pull out my phone from a pocket and check the time. 6 o'clock.

That took a hell of a lot longer than I fucking thought it would. I put my phone into the bag.

Might as well just go to Danny's house now.

So that's exactly what I do. Twenty minutes later, I'm ringing Danny's doorbell, the bag in my hand and my back leaning against the wall. The bike is somewhere out front.

I hear the door handle shakes a bit before opening and I look up to see the man of the hour.

"Ads? You're an hour and a half early."

"Thanks captain obvious," I say laughing "I'm sorry I kinda... showed up. I got bored. I can go..." I say pushing myself off the wall, motioning to leave.

"No, no that's ok. Come in" he says opening the door wider.

I step into the apartment, taking in the somewhat familiar surroundings. I turn back to speak but stop, taking in his appearance..

"Dude, did I wake you up?"

"Kinda"

"Shit, my bad" I laugh.

"All good, all good"

We take our conversation to a seating area and talk for a bit before I ask if he has my stuff. As soon as I do, the doorbell rings again and he slightly tenses up.

"That's the delivery. I couldn't get it earlier since your call was last minute. You don't need to be around these people, ok? Go up to my room and stay there until I call you down or come get you. I don't need him seeing you"

I open my mouth to object but he cuts me off.

"I'm not playing Ads. Go"

I silently stare at him for a couple moments before rolling my eyes and wordlessly nodding my head and getting up.

I walk to the room and sit for a while on my phone. It feels like ages before Danny comes into the room telling me the coast was clear.

We both walk down and make a quick exchange as I count the money in my bag.

I stop in my tracks and suddenly look up.

"Danny?"

"Mhm?"

"I forgot the money"

He looks at me incredulously before I crack up laughing.

"Should've seen your face!" I laugh.

He simply rolls his eyes.

He hands me everything and I give him the money. I put everything into the bag and am able to see I still have a couple thousand.

" There's a party tonight, want to come?" he says suddenly.

Knowing I have to return to the Porters, I decline the offer even though would love to go.

"That's cool, supposed to be a good one. Tell me if you change your mind."

This time it's my turn to roll my eyes.

My phone rings and I pull my phone out to see Eloise's name flashing across the screen.

Fucking hell.

I excuse myself and go into another room to answer. I quickly flash a smile across my face before answering.

"Hello?"

"Hi! It's Eloise," no shit sherlock "how is everything?"

"Everything is alright I guess. They're nice."

"Good I'm glad. Soo, I called because I've got and update about your situation."

My heart almost stopped.

"Oh yea?"

"Yes! Right, I wanted to make sure beforehand. You did say you don't have any living relatives you are aware of , correct?"

"Yes"

" Well we can't be sure but we do have something we want to check out."

"Which is?"

She isn't getting to the point fast enough.

"We found a missing persons report made 10 years ago for a 5 year old Adelina Bianco. The pictures are quite similar as well"

"I don't understand"

That's a fucking lie.

"We'd like for you to meet up with the family who filed the report. They think you might be their sister. They're a family of six brothers, does that ring a bell?"

Nope, absolutely not.

" I don't have any family"

"We think-"

"I don't trust it, what if they're just strangers who want me to fill the void of their sister. I don't want to meet them"

"Adelina-"

"What about a DNA test? Can we do that before I meet them?"

She stays silent for a moment.

"Yes, we can absolutely do that. How about I have someone come by tomorrow afternoon to take a sample of your DNA"

I gulp before answering.

"Yes, that sounds good" I say soflty.

"Alright then, I'll talk to you later" she says in the same soft tone.

"Bye"

"Bye"

I hang up the phone and realization sets in. All I did was buy myself more time but I will end up in their cutsody.

"Danny!" I yell.

"Yea!" he yells back.

"What time's that party"
