The Calm Before the Storm

✿♡♡♡✿

It was Sunday evening, and the atmosphere in both the Kapoor and Sharma households was anything but calm. With the first exams looming the next morning, tensions were high, though the scenes in each home unfolded in their unique way.

Aarav sat in his room, his desk meticulously organized with stacks of notes and textbooks. His mother, Mrs. Kavita Kapoor, peeked in with a cup of steaming milk.

"Aarav, kitni der se padh rahe ho? Thoda break lo," she said, placing the cup on his desk.

Aarav glanced up, a small smile breaking through his usually serious expression. "Bas thoda sa aur, Mom. Kal physics ka exam hai."

Mrs. Kapoor sighed, brushing his hair affectionately. "Tum hamesha apne aap ko itna pressurize kyun karte ho? Tumhare marks toh waise bhi hamesha perfect hote hain."

Aarav smirked. "Perfect nahi, Mom. Achhe hote hain. Aur perfect ke liye mehnat karni padti hai."

Mrs. Kapoor shook her head, a mix of pride and concern in her eyes. "Mujhe tum par hamesha garv hota hai, Aarav. Lekin health ka bhi dhyan rakhna zaroori hai."

Aarav nodded, taking a sip of the milk. "Aapko tension lene ki zarurat nahi hai, Maa. Main apna dhyan rakhta hoon."

Mrs. Kapoor patted his cheek lovingly. "Woh toh mujhe pata hai. Lekin Maa hoon, tension lena toh mera haq hai."

As she left the room, Aarav found himself smiling. Moments like these reminded him of the comfort and warmth of home, something he rarely let himself indulge in.

His father, Mr. Raghav Kapoor, entered with a cup of steaming tea.

"Beta, kuch der rest kar lo. Padhai toh ho hi jayegi," Raghav suggested, placing the tea on the desk.

"Dad, abhi maa milk le ke ayi thi aur ab aap tea kya hai ye? Aur mujhe bas topic revise karna hai. Kal physics ka paper kaafi crucial hoga Tripathi sir ne bola tha," Aarav replied, his eyes not leaving the pages.

Raghav smiled proudly. "Main jaanta hoon, tum bahot focused ho. Par thoda relax bhi zaroori hai."

Just then, Mrs. Kavita, walked in again with a bowl of almonds. "Aarav, yeh kha lo. Tumhare brain ke liye achha rahega," she said, her tone a mix of affection and concern.

Aarav nodded and took a handful. "Thanks, Mom."

"Waise, Kabir ka phone aaya tha. Woh keh raha tha ki tum dono ke beech ek race chal rahi hai topper banne ki," Kavita teased.

Aarav smirked slightly. "Kabir hamesa bakwas hi bolta hai."

"Aur bas Mom Dad, ab mujhe focus karne do," Aarav said, shooing her away.

As the door closed, he leaned back in his chair, his mind wandering to the moments with Meera earlier that week. Shaking his head, he returned to his notes.

Meanwhile, in the Sharma household, the scene was far from organized. Meera’s books were sprawled across the dining table, and she sat cross-legged on the floor, solving math problems at lightning speed.

"Meera, yeh kya haal banaya hai? Tumhare notes toh bed pe hai, yahan table pe books, aur ab tum zameen par. Kaise manage karogi?" her mother, Mrs. Shalini Sharma, exclaimed.

"Ye lo, thoda juice pe lo. Padte-padte thak jaogi," her mother said, placing the glass beside her.

Meera looked up and smiled gratefully. "Thank you, Mumma . Bas thoda aur revise karna hai. Vo abhi thode questions baaki hain. Ek jagah par baithne se boring ho jata hai," Meera replied, scribbling furiously.

"Riya ka phone kyun nahi uthaya tumne? Chaar baar call kar chuki hai evening se," Shalini said.

"Uska reply subah kar dungi. Aman se bhi kuch formulas discuss karne hain," Meera mumbled, her focus unwavering.

Her father, Mr. Arvind Sharma, walked in. "Meera, exams ke liye overwork mat karo. Tumhare preparation hamesha acchi hoti hai," he said, adjusting his glasses.

Meera chuckled. "Papa, maths thoda tough lag raha hai. Aman toh keh raha tha ki differentiation uske nightmares mein aa rahe hain."

Mr. Sharma laughed. "Aman toh hamesha kuch na kuch ulta seedha bolta hai. Tum uski baatein mat suno."

Mrs. Sharma joined in, shaking her head. "Woh Aman to kehta hai, padhai ke baad  stand-up comedy me career banaega."

The light-hearted conversation eased some of Meera's tension. She returned to her notes with a renewed sense of focus, her parents' support giving her the motivation to push through.

----------------------------------------------------

The sun had barely risen when both households came alive. Aarav was already dressed, his school uniform crisp and his bag packed. His mother handed him a neatly packed lunchbox.

"All the best, beta," she said, brushing a stray strand of hair from his forehead.

"Thanks, Mom," Aarav replied.

At the Sharma house, chaos reigned. Meera scrambled to stuff her notebooks into her bag while munching on a piece of toast.

"Meera, ek din toh time par ready ho jao," Shalini scolded, placing a bottle of water in her bag.

"Exams ke din bhi lecture?" Meera shot back, grabbing her scooty keys.

As she rode to school, her mind raced through math formulas, though a small part of her wondered if Aarav was just as nervous about his exam.

The 11th-grade classroom was a mix of chaos and nervous energy. Meera and Riya sat together, flipping through notes one last time.

"Aman kaha hai?" Meera asked.

Riya rolled her eyes. "Late hoga as usual. Kal raat tak mujhe jokes bhej raha tha."

Aman sauntered in moments later, looking far too relaxed for someone about to take an exam.

"Ready to fail, ladies?" he said with a grin.

Riya glared at him. "Teri wajah se mere sare formulas mix ho gaye hain, Aman."

"Acha? Toh blame mujh par. Agar fail ho gayi, toh sabko bataunga ki tumhare notes chura liye the," Aman replied dramatically.

The banter was interrupted by the teacher entering with the question papers.

"Settle down, everyone. Time to start," she announced.

In the 12th-grade classroom, the atmosphere was far more serious. Aarav and Kabir sat side by side, their faces calm but their minds racing.

"Physics ke liye ready ho Captain?" Kabir whispered.

"As ready as I can be," Aarav replied.

The teacher distributed the question papers, and a hush fell over the room. Aarav scanned the questions, his mind locking into focus.

The exam passed in a blur of scribbled answers and ticking clocks.

The exam ended with a collective sigh of relief as students spilled out of their halls, animatedly discussing their answers.

In the 11th grade, Aman walked out of the classroom with a wide grin. "That wasn’t so bad," he said, stretching.

Meera and her friends were similarly animated. "Mujhe lagta hai maine do questions galat kar diye," Meera admitted.

"Chhodo, Meera. Tumhare galat hone ke chances Aman ke sahi hone ke chances jitne kam hain," Riya teased, making Aman protest loudly.

Meanwhile, in the 12th grade, Kabir walked out, shaking his head. "Physics is the enemy of mankind," he declared.

Aarav smirked. "Tumhare answers galat ho gaye kya?"

"Arre yaar, Manageable tha. Chal, canteen chalte hain." Kabir said, throwing an arm around Aarav.

As they headed to the cafeteria, Aarav spotted Meera laughing with Aman and Riya under the neem tree. For a moment, everything else faded, and he found himself smiling.

Kabir nudged him. "Kya hua? Focus Captain Kapoor, exams abhi khatam nahi hue."

"Bas," Aarav said, his voice soft. "Kuch nahi."

----------------------------------------------------

The days of exams rolled by like a storm, leaving behind a trail of exhausted students and crumpled answer sheets. The tension in the classrooms had eased, replaced by nervous chatter about how everyone had performed.

It was the last day of exams, and Aarav sat in his usual spot, his face calm and composed. The chemistry paper had been challenging, but he’d prepared meticulously.

Kabir, on the other hand, had a mix of relief and regret written all over his face. “Abe Captain, maine jo chemical reaction likhe h unka galat reaction to nhi hoga teacher pe.”

Aarav smirked. “Aur tu yeh keh raha hai ki tu serious tha exam ke liye?”

Kabir leaned back, stretching. “Serious toh tha, par meri seriousness Tere jaisi nahi hai na. Waise, tera paper kaisa gaya?”

“Smooth,” Aarav replied, closing his notebook. “Question paper  tricky tha, par manageable. Hamne milkar jo quick notes banaye the kaafi kaam aaye.”

Kabir gave him a dramatic bow. “Meri greatness ke baare mein likhna mat bhoolna jab tum famous ban jao.”

The scene in the 11th-grade classroom was a stark contrast. Meera and Riya were slouched at their desks, their faces mirrors of despair.

Meera groaned. “Riya, mujhe lagta hai Tripathi sir ko hum sab se personal dushmani hai. Har questions mein ek twist dal diya tha.”

Riya nodded solemnly. “Aur mujhe lagta hai ki meri preparation sirf ek formality thi. Mujhe toh woh 10-mark ka question dekh ke pyaar ho gaya—kya beautifully complicated tha.”

Aman, sitting across from them, had his own theatrical meltdown. “Main toh apne answers ke liye Oscar nomination ka intezaar kar raha hoon. Har step pe imagination ka kamaal dikhaya hai maine.”

Riya glared at him. “Aman, tumhare jokes se meri physics ke marks nahi badhne wale.”

Aman shrugged. “Agar humein marks nahi milenge, toh at least hasi toh milni chahiye.”

The invigilator, collecting the last of the answer sheets. As she passed Meera’s desk, she said, “Head Girl ho tum, Meera.  toh expectations kaafi high hain tumse.”

Meera gave a smile. “Ma’am, don't worry maine apna best hi diya hai saare exam me.”

Aman whispered loudly, “Ma’am, mujhe expectations ka pressure nahi, bas direct mercy chahiye.”

The entire class burst into laughter, even the invigilator couldn’t help but smile.

The final exam ended, and a wave of relief swept through the school. The corridors buzzed with energy as students poured out of classrooms, cheering, chattering, and exchanging war stories of their battles with question papers. For a change, the air was light, and the tension of weeks seemed to dissolve into the chaos of post-exam celebrations.

The canteen was the epicenter of all the action, brimming with students. It felt as though every corner was claimed, every chair occupied, and every table turned into a hub of animated discussions. Amid the crowd, Meera, Aman, and Riya managed to secure a corner table near the window.

Aman plopped down dramatically, letting out a loud sigh. “Finally! It’s over. Exam ke naam pe mujhe toh mental torture lag raha tha.”

Meera smirked, resting her chin on her hand. “Aur tumhare answers bhi waise hi the, right?”

Riya giggled. “Meera, bechare ko shanti se baithne toh do. Waise bhi, Aman ki answers sunke examiner ko PTSD ho jaayega.”

Aman threw his hands in mock indignation. “Tum dono mujhe target karke shaanti milti hai, hai na? Lekin ek baat sun lo. Mujhe koi fail to nahi kar sakta afterall kuch to maine bhi likha hi hai” He straightened up and began mimicking their Physics teacher.

“'The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s²' – bas, ma’am toh aise bolti hain jaise unki life ka tagline hai!”

The girls burst into laughter, nearly spilling their cold drinks.

“Waise,” Aman continued, “exam se zyada tough tha wo last ke five minutes – jab har student mein ek inner Einstein jaag jaata hai aur woh aise dikhate hai jaise exam ke bad next Einstein vo log hi banege.”

Meera wiped tears of laughter from her eyes. “Aman, tum kabhi serious hote bhi ho?”

“Bilkul nahi,” Aman replied proudly, as though it were a badge of honor.

Aarav and Kabir found a quiet corner with plates of samosas, discussing future plans.

Kabir noticed them and nudged Aarav. “Captain, tumhari juniors yahan bhi apna drama lekar aa gayi hain.”

Aarav glanced up briefly, his gaze lingering on Meera’s laugh for a moment before turning back to his plate. “Let them enjoy. Exams ke baad sabka yahi haal hota hai.”

Riya noticed Aarav and Kabir and whispered to Meera. “Dekho, Aarav bhaiya kaise calm and composed hain. Hum log unke samne total disaster lagte hain.”

Meera glanced over and shrugged. “Unhe kya tension, unka toh sab perfect hota hai.”

Aman, overhearing, added loudly, “Aarav bhaiya—humein aapki calmness ka secret bhi sikha dijiye.”

Kabir grinned, raising his samosa in mock toast. “Secret hai samosa aur good sleep.”

As the students headed out, Aarav and Kabir walked towards the football field, discussing the upcoming inter-school matches.

Meanwhile, Meera, Riya, and Aman lingered near the school gates.

Meera sighed. “Exams toh khatam ho gaye, par ab marks tension rahega.”

Aman shrugged. “Tum log dekho, maine to apne answers ko ek art banake likha hai.  Mujhe Koi tension nahi.”

Riya rolled her eyes. “Aman, tumhare answers art nahi, disaster honge.”

The three walked out together, the weight of exams finally lifting. Little did they know, the end of exams was just the beginning of new challenges, friendships, and unexpected connections.

As Aarav watched Meera leave from a distance, something tugged at his thoughts—a faint curiosity, an unspoken question. What was it about her that seemed so… magnetic?

And as Meera glanced back briefly, she caught a glimpse of Aarav looking her way, her heart skipping a beat.

“Riya, chalo, bahut der ho gayi,” she said quickly, turning away, brushing off the strange flutter she felt.

For both of them, the next chapter of their lives was about to begin, unknowingly entwined in ways they couldn’t yet imagine.
