Rose's POV
"Rosemarie Adams, wake up immediately, I am too old to scream for half an hour!" I heard my grandma yelling from the kitchen. Her voice pierced my newly woken up ears as it echoed through the house. It was way too early for that.
"God dammit, can you just let me sleep for five minutes!" I yelled back crankily.
"NO, get up, and go to school! NOW!"
I opened my eyes angrily and pushed the blanked off of me. Cold air crept under my skin as I noticed the sunlight going through the crack between my thick blue curtains. I narrowed my eyes at it and jumped off of the bed. I marched towards the window and pulled the curtain over it mumbling curses under my breath.
"I can't, I'm sick!" I yelled as I jumped back in bed and closed my eyes. Today doesn't seem like an interesting day anyway.
"Young lady if you don't get out of that bed, I swear to God..." she said as she walked in, not lowering her tone down.
"Okay, okay, just stop yelling already, please!"
"God made you for nothing. The one and only thing you are capable of is lying in your bed all day"
"Can you please quiet down; my head is hurting from your voice", I asked her politely. She put her hands on her hips angrily and looked at me with those mean little brown eyes.
"Watch your mouth and move! You're late. That friend of yours is waiting downstairs"
I stared back and she narrowed her eyes.
"Just tell her to wait for 5 more minutes"
"I will when you get up", she said. I rolled my eyes and finally did what she wanted with a dramatic sigh. She triumphantly smiled and added: "And, for the love of God put some decent clothes on, not that thing that you young kids wear nowadays"
With that she left. I took a look on the pink clock that stood on my nightstand, just to see that I have 30 minutes to get ready. I sighed. Typical morning in the Adams' house.
"That woman is making me crazy", I said quietly. I love my grandma, but sometimes she is just unbearable, and by sometimes I mean very often.
I took white tank top and a pair of baggy ripped jeans and went to the bathroom. After about ten minutes I was done.
Layla was waiting on couch watching TV. Her dark brown hair was falling down her shoulders in messy waves and she was very focused on the show host who was yelling at some poor lady. I cleared my throat and she jumped up with a wild look in her eyes. She frowned at me.
"You scared me, douche"
"Good morning to you too, sunshine"
She crossed her arms on her chest and studied my appearance very carefully. Smile crept on her face.
"What's with your hair?" she asked.
"It's a messy ponytail", I answered raising my eyebrow. She rolled her eyes and came closer sighing in disappointment.
"Dear God... just put some heels on so we can go"
"But, I hate heels. I can't move properly in them"
"I wasn't asking", she said as she handed me black heels. I put them on while watching her. She definitely wasn't done with me. Just when that thought went through my head, she ducked and snatched my headband and put it on her wrist.
"I'm going to fix that mess up", she murmured to herself and started brushing my hair. I chuckled.
"Are you satisfied?" I asked getting up when she was done with my hair.
"Yes, now let's go"
With that we left the house. I could hear my grandma screaming something from the house, but I just ignored her. She's a bit of a control freak and I hate to be controlled. That's probably the reason why we fight most of the time.
Layla and I were going on foot because school was, like most things in Pinemoor, just around the corner. We were going through the same streets and beside the same stores as we did for three years - since we started going to high school.
Today was the first day of our junior year and to say that Layla was excited would be understatement. She had been planning outfits that she would wear in the first month for the half of the summer. I, on the other hand, hated waking up early which was caused by school so by default the school was not in my good grace.
I felt a slight earthquake halfway there. I almost didn't notice it as I lived in San Francisco for eight years, but Layla, who was terribly scared of the earthquakes, jumped incredibly high and started screaming. I tried to calm her down when another, a lot stronger one begun.
"It's fine, it'll stop in a sec", I said when I saw panicked look in her eyes
"No, it won't, we will die... I saw it in a movie"
"Don't be dramatic, it's just ground shaking", I said just when it stopped, "See, it's fine"
"Oh, God we almost died", she said and I laughed. She sent me a glare and tugged my arm almost dragging me with her as she faked being hurt. I looked up and saw she was containing a smile.
We continued walking and laughing to stupid jokes. When we were finally in front of the school we sat on our bench. The bench wasn't anything special, just an old wooden bench under a big old tree with our initials written on it, but it was our bench and nobody was allowed to sit on it except us.
Just when we took our place, a guy walked by. He was tall, pale, dark-haired and gorgeous in every way. He seemed a bit familiar, but I didn't know from where. When he was far enough Layla turned to me with widened eyes and crazy smile.
"Cole got hot damn", she said. That's right. Cole; Scottish guy from the other class.
I opened my moth to say something, but my voice was drowned in a loud bang. It made me cover my ears and left unpleasant ringing afterwards.
I stood up and made few steps.
Once again, the earthquake started. This one was stronger than the last one. Layla squealed and I almost lost balance, so I grabbed the tree. Smile fell off of my face.
Soon I heard windows breaking, people screaming and the loud sound of car hitting breaks.
Earthquake didn't stop.
Chaos begun.
There was people everywhere just running around without purpose. School alarm started beeping and students were running out like a scared herd of sheep.
Layla was sitting on the ground with her head in her hands.
I didn't know what to do. I was just standing there trying to maintain balance in those stupid heels.
There was another bang. It was so loud that I needed to cover my ears once again.
"Fire", someone yelled.
I looked around and saw smoke.
"What's going on?" I asked, but no one answered. Everyone was in shock or screaming or crying. My mind was in overdrive. I could basically feel steam coming out of my brain while it tried to make sense of this situation.
I made a few more steps and one of my heels broke. I swore under my breath and threw them away.
Earthquake stopped.
Suddenly I didn't hear anything but silence. I helped Layla to get up.
We just stood there looking around for some kind of explanation.
It seemed like everyone was frozen.
We never had an earthquake in Pinemoor. Ever.
So, what the hell was that?
Out of the blue, some kind of helicopter flew just above my head.
And then another one.
And another one.
In few minutes the whole sky was covered in them. Everyone just stood and looked at the sky. Streets were filled with people who didn't know what to do. I gulped turning around slowly. I could feel cold sweat on my forehead. My breaths were shallow.
I was afraid. I don't know of what, but I was afraid.
Third bang shook the ground and filled my ears. It was louder than other two and somehow it served as wake-up call. Chaos started all over again. People screamed and ran nowhere in particular, not caring about anyone else but themselves. Layla pulled my arm and I looked at her. She was terrified.
Suddenly I heard a loud scream that seemed different in that pool of screams and pleads for help. I don't know why, but I ran in that direction leaving Layla behind.
Everything seemed to disappear as I focused on that task which is very funny considering the world was probably ending or something like that. I ran and checked under a fallen tree, broken fence, shattered glass, but the scream didn't come from there.
"Please", I heard that voice again. I ran across the street and saw a little girl pinned under the wrecked car.
"Oh, God, what happened?" I asked bending down and studying her face. It was bruised and she looked so frightened. My heart tightened and I looked away for a moment.
"M-my mum was d-driving and w-we had car accident. I-I don't know w-where she is a-and I can't feel m-my leg", she explained and started sobbing.
"Okay...um... you just calm down and I'll help you"
I looked at her leg and saw it was stabbed with something. I tried to move it, but I stopped when she screamed in pain.
"It's okay, we'll just wait here", I said calmly even though I was screaming inside. I looked at my hands. They were shaking and blood was all over them. I bit my lip. I knew I couldn't help her. Her breathing speeded up.
I felt warm tears on my face. I took her hand and started telling her that everything will be fine. It was the only thing that I could think of. I had no idea what was going on or what will happen next.
I couldn't believe that ten minutes ago everything was normal; everything was like it was supposed to be. Now all I heard was screaming, crying and my whole world falling apart.
Last thing I heard before blacking out was some kind of high pitched tone.
That was almost a year ago...
